Overview
La Nuova Era Cuadra HX Espresso Machine
Our version of the La Nuova Era Cuadra includes a no-burn steam wand, no-burn hot water wand, and an upgraded brain unit. Heat exchanger (HX) system with an E61 grouphead. Boiler pressure gauge. There is even a refill spout so you do not need to pull your machine forward to fill the reservoir. Brain unit, pump, and solenoid valve are near the bottom to avoid boiler heat which rises, and these same items are protected with stainless steel covering to prevent water from splashing on them. Need we say more? Looking for another heat exchange espresso machine? Take a look at the Bellezza Inizo R Leva HX Espresso Machine

Features
Heat exchange system
- Copper, insulation: The boiler is made of copper which retains heat better than stainless steel. Typically copper boilers are more susceptible to limescale when you compare to stainless steel boilers. Therefore, we highly recommend utilizing the water softener that comes with this machine. The manufacturer wraps the boiler with insulation for maximum heat retention.
- Pull a shot & steam milk at the same time: Steam is always readily available. Hence, there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
E-61 grouphead
- Constantly heated: Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. As a result, the grouphead temperature constant and stable when you compare to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element.
- Pre-infusion: Lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds. Pulling the lever half way up will open the valve to allow water into the grouphead without activating the pump. Please note that true pre-infusion requires the direct water connection whereby the water pressure from the water line creates true pre-infusion.
Tank/reservoir system
- Water softener: The best protection from any limescale buildup in your machine. The water softener must be charged before use. Please follow our instructions on how to do so. This water softener also acts as a particle filter to protect the machine from any unseen particles entering the boiler.
- Auto-shut off: Prevents burning out the heating element. The water tank sits on a spring activated plate. Once the water is low, the plate depresses the tank microswitch which turns off the heating element.
Vibratory pump
- Efficient: 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. You only need 9 bar to extract perfect espresso, and wattage has no correlation to longevity.
- Cost effective: Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will cost less than a rotary vane pump.
Steam/water wand
- Multi-directional: Allows for more movement and flexibility. The wands connect to the valves at an angle to the side for even more flexibility. As a result, there is less risk of burning oneself from the exposed grouphead.
- No burn: Normally the Cuadra comes with regular wands, but requested no-burn wands. Both wands have insulation, which allows you to touch any part of the stem. Please note after very long periods of use, the wands will eventually be hot.
- 2-hole steam tip: Allows for a slow gradual build-up of microfoam.
- Rotational knobs: Allows for easier control of the intensity.
Construction
- Frame: Made of stainless steel (not polished).
- Body panels: Sides panels are made of plastic with a polished chrome color coat. The back panel is made of stainless steel satin with a satin finish. The front panel is made of stainless steel with a polished finish.
- Drip tray: Made of stainless steel. Slides out from the machine for easy cleaning. Plastic insert and stainless steel drip tray cover add a really nice touch.
- Cup warmer tray: Made of stainless steel. Must be removed to refill the water reservoir. As with any machine, cups can take up to 2 hours to preheat using a cup warmer tray. You can use the water wand to flash heat your cups.
Accessories included
- Portafilters: Single spout portafilter & dual spout portafilter. Both are 58 mm. The filter heads have “La Nuova Era” imprint on them.
- Filter baskets: 1-cup filter basket which holds approximately 7 grams. 2-cup filter basket which holds approximately 14 grams. 58 mm in diameter.
- Tamper: A cheap plastic tamper. Manufacturers will normally include a tamper like this to keep the overall selling price of the machine low. We recommend upgrading to a better tamper.
- Cleaning brush: Used for cleaning the grouphead. Ergonomically designed with an angle for easier usage.
- Coffee scoop: A simple plastic scoop if you are using pre-ground coffee.
- Cleaning brush: Specifically for cleaning the grouphead.
- Funnel: Helps fill your water tank without the need to remove it. Useful if your machine doesn’t have the height clearance to allow you to fully remove the water tank from your machine.
- Water softener: Already attached to the intake hose.
- Instruction manual: Available in English and Italian.

Notes
General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:
- Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
- Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
- Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
- Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
- Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

I have a 10 year unit that I've repaired with parts form 1st-line over the years. I'm noticing that it is now switching cycling on the heating element about every 20-30 seconds. I've searched for steam leaks but am not finding anything (at least nothing obvious). Perhaps it always did this and I didn't notice previously? Can you note how often the heating element should be switching on? I thought it was every few mins when I got the machine? Any tips on which components are most likely to develop leaks?

Sorry, different environments have different heating cycles. Every 20-30 seconds is faster than usual, so you may have a steam leak somewhere. Since the unit is 10 years old, we suggest a professional evaluate it.

Hello, I have a La Nuova Era Cuadra Espresso machine and just noticed a small leak in the fitting that attaches to the pressure stat. I've tried to do some research online to find this fitting but am not having much luck. I did find this link (https://www.home-barista.com/repairs/nuova-era-cuadra-pressurestat-leak-t46227.html) where someone posted a link to your website with the replacement part however the link seems to be old. The reference is #6 by homeburrero on March 2th, 2017. I'm assuming this part is discontinued but was hoping you could help point me in the right direction for a new part. I think the leak is caused by an Oring that isn't sealing anymore. From the picture at the top, the pStat is on the right and the leak is the brass fitting just to the left. To the left of that brass fitting (where it says 1.8 bar) is a small clip. I've removed that and slid the square brass fitting (with the safety valve and vacuum breaker on) off of the shaft and it seems that it is a banjo style fitting with two orings (I think Viton) Maybe I can just replaced those Orings? Anyway this is my first espresso machine so not sure if this is feasible or if there is another solution you recommend but would be happy to hear any advice you have. Thank you in advance!

I purchased my Cuadra second hand and it looks like the machine is from 2013. My machine is not working, I went through your troubleshooting guide and I am still having issues. The machine powers on, the green indicator light illuminates and i hear the relay in the control unit click on(usually i hear the pump turn on for a second to top up the tank, but it does not currently). The unit does not heat up after that and when i try to turn on the pump manually with the switch, i hear the relay contact close, I checked it and its getting continuity. I checked the heating element resistance/continuity and it seems fine. There does not seem to be a relay near the gauge or on the pressure switch. all the relays seem to be in the control box(which is the Pro.El.Ind. unit) or the one above the on off switch which i assume controls the heating element. Does this seem like its a problem with the controller or autofill relay? the instructions say that there is not a way to test these, is there not a way to trick the sensor just to see if its the culprit? thanks

I have 1st-Line La Nueva Era Quadra from 2013. Great machine! However, it has started acting "weird" and produces bad coffee. It comes to pressure as always, but when the lever is thrown, it waits 15 or more sec to start the coffee going. Then it comes out in large tails (not mouse tails) until I shut it off. (I haven't changed coffees, grind, or anything.) Any idea what could cause this?? Thanks!

Hello, I recently took the E61 apart for a quick cleaning. Everything was fine, but now my machine turns on normally, heats up to normal temp, then as it sits, it looses pressure and nothing happens when I pull up the lever-gauge will go to zero even when turned on. If I time it just right after turning it on, I am allowed to pour a single shot, and barely steam milk before it looses pressure. So, it functions correctly, but only for maybe 20 minutes before it looses pressure. Did I assemble the E61 wrong?

When i turn it on, the unit gets hot. The psi says 15, i open the steam wand valve and nothing comes out, psi drops to zero. Then it will go back up to 15 i open vale some steam comes out back to zero. The Panel Plug on my La Nuova Era Cuadra melted about two months ago after ~10 years of use and I ordered a replacement part for it. After inspecting the panel plug, it indicates that it's rated for 10a, yet the fuse is 15a and the cord is rated for 13a. When plugged in to a meter, the machine shows that it's pulling 9.6a. The original panel plug was also rated for 10a. Why would a 10a panel plug be protected by a 15a fuse? This sounds like the reason this part failed and is an unsafe design from La Nuova. Are they providing an updated plug to correct this problem?

If the panel plug part was incorrectly rated, we do not believe it would have lasted 7 years. In fact, it would have melted within the first few weeks and hundreds of customers would have been complaining. After 7 years of use, the replacement was needed from wear and tear. In other causes, this receptacle can damage from an electrical surge or water landing inside on the part as it is below the reservoir. Hence, fill the reservoir on the outside of any espresso machine.
Did you see the voltage rating on the panel plug? Did it say either 110, 220, 230, 240, or even 250 volts?
A The plug is rated at 10 or maybe 15? From factory. Based on heater watts it should have been 5 more. Mine melted too, i soldered in a new one rated 5 more(what it should have been)

Hi,
We have a universal one that fits E61 groupheads, SKU 50890.
Hello, I bought the machine a few months ago. I only make two shots of espresso in the morning and in the afternoon. Today I wanted to try steaming milk but the machine doesn’t seem to have steaming power or something is obscuring the wand. Any advice? Thank you!

Please check the steam hole tip. It is probably clogged. If the boiler pressure gauge reads zero, then it may be the vacuum breaker valve on top of the boiler is sticking from limescale.
I purchased a La Nuova Cuadra espresso machine from 1st line in 2013. The machine no longer turns on, and I suspect that the fuse may be blown. I have ordered a replacement fuse. Could you advise on how to replace the fuse, or how to check if the fuse is indeed the problem? I live in Atlanta and according to your search function I have no repair dealers anywhere nearby. Thank you!

Yes, there are high temperature PTFE tubes that feed cold water to the boiler. The insides of espresso machines do get hot, so all tubes can get warm to hot. Most water tank espresso machines do have silicone hoses that allow water to travel from the reservoir to the internal pump.
I bought a "La Nuova Era Cuadra" from you about 6 years ago - love it.
Recently, however, it shorted out at the plug/receptacle (on the unit, not the wall), melting the rubber of the cord and receptacle.
I replaced both the cord and the receptacle, but after leaving it on for 20min to get ready to make another espresso, it shorted out again.
Can you please advise if there is something else I should look at replacing?

Yes, but since it will only be one unit in red, we would not have the multi-unit discount which would increase the selling price by $250.00 This would be a special order requiring prepayment by wire transfer or certified bank check.

Q With no plumb-in option, what exactly does the “pre-infusion” function do? Thanks! answer nowAsked by on March 28, 2019 3:59 pmAnswered by the admin
Pre-infusion is the pre-soaking of the ground coffee with hot water under low pressure. The low pressure is from the direct water line or the steam pressure built in the heat exchanger, or the pump pressure by the vibration pump that takes up to 8 seconds to get up to full pressure, or the grouphead chamber.

My Cuadra (La Nuova Era) is slowly dripping from the bottom (very annoying). I found the area where the leak is coming from. It is coming out of the part called "La Nuova Era Straight Snap-On Socket/Connector". Unfortunately, your site says "out of stock" on this item and I cannot seem to find this part anywhere else. Do you have a remedy for this part without replacing it?

Sorry, you will need to ask an additional question as we go by part numbers and not by descriptions. Please note that the manufacturer, at this time, has made things more difficult with parts as they made ALL NEW part numbers and they have not provided any relational table showing the old part number to the new part number.
I asked a follow up question about the no burn Cuadra wand alternative Please see my question as it appears under "answer". Basically since you say "May" work--are the fittings the same so at least it is compatible that it will install safely and properly? Why do you say "May" work? Any alternative suppliers for the previous Cuadra wand?

We do say 'may' work because La Nuova Era machines had 2 different valves over the years. There was also previous importer who brought them in who may have sold to other customers. If we say 'will' work, then customers will assume we are responsible for machines purchased elsewhere or have a variation of the valve. In essence, we need to be careful as we do not have the machine in front of us, and this is why many companies will not sell parts due to variations by espresso machine manuacturers. Thank you in advance for understanding.
I purchased from you the Version 3 with the non burn wand (I understand there is insulation inside the metal which dampens the steam). I find that the steam volume does not do an acceptable job of frothing compared to the the earlier models without the burn protection that my friends have. Can I purchase an earlier version wand without burn protection and replace the current one--that is, would it be compatible?

Correct. The insulated wand has a smaller diameter and less power. Sorry, we do not have the original wands any more. We do have an alternative that MAY work.
A You replied it "MAY" work. Will it fit the Cuadra fitting for the wand? Would not buy if it would not have compatible fitting. Otherwise, why do you say "MAY"? Is there another source to buy the earlier wand--I do not see anybody selling the Cuadra on line anymore?
You answered my initial question about mold in the water hoses saying to take off the side panels to access them. I have already done that though and am not able to get to the connections for the hoses which is what lead me to my question. Any other suggestions that might help? My water tubes all have some black or pink mold but I have no way to disconnect them. I'm nervous to take apart the entire unit.

Please note our free support is for simple issues.
We are sorry many manufacturers, including dealers, do not offer repair instructions for every type of issue - especially issues that become very detailed or complex.
This is why service companies exist, and their technicians are trained through apprenticeships (hands on learning of usually 2 or more years).
Based on the age of your machine and uneasiness of taking the machine further apart, a professional should be hired or the machine should be shipped in for evaluation and service.
I purchased my Cuadra back in 2013 from you guys. My 2 water line hoses are starting to get some black and pink (mold?) on the inside of them. I can't reach either connection to replace the hoses. Any suggestions as to how to clean these or keep them from getting this on the inside? It looks like to replace the hose, I literally have to take the entire machine apart?

The hoses would need to be removed, then soaked in bleach overnight, then rinsed for 10 minutes. The boses can be removed after the 2 side panels are removed.

Only descale if a pump is failing or there is a clog on a non-new machine. Do this after removing the water softener.
Otherwise, recharge the water softener 1-4x per month.

I purchased the Caudra V2 machine from you a little more than 2 years ago and I had to replace the relay switch which now went bad a 2nd time. Your price has now jumped from $49 to $69 for this part. Is it normal for this part to be replaced this often? Also when the machine was new and up until recently the bar pressure would always be about 15 or 1psi but now it will reach a pressure of 18 or 19 bar pressure. Is this normal for the pressure to increase on it's own over time and should I lower the pressure back down to 15 by adjusting the pressurestat in the machine? Thanks and I love this machine.

Sorry, prices are based on euro exchange rates, themanufacturer's cost, shipping and duties. All these costs have been increasing over the past year.
Sorry, we are unsure where there is 15-19 bars of pressure. The gauge needle usually does not exceed 2 bar.
I have a La Cuadra machine which was purchased from you on 8/27/2013. The machine is able to heat the water but unable to build up pressure. Once in while the pressure builds up to 1 bar at start up, but is unable to maintain the pressure after making one shot. I'm unable to steam milk. I've already descaled the machine with the Ascaso cleaning powder. The unit powers on and the green light stays on. I can feel the portafilter heating up. Please advise. Thanks, Dennis

The water softener is held on to the intake hose by friction. Holding the hose, the softener can be pulled off.
The instructions require a salt water bath and water rinse.
We prefer prevention with a water softener as descaling should only be performed when an issue arises. The reason is that descaling starts premature wear and tear on the metal components as well as any gasket/o-ring seals inside the machine.

My question: What is the best way to access the Panel Plug for removal and replacement?

Please look inside behind the switch. You should see holding tabs (usually 2 on two sides) that need to be depressed while trying to pry out the panel plug with a flat-head screwdriver.

Thank you, DennisAnswered by the adminThe losing pressure issue is related to a failing brain unit (there are three versions now on Cuadra as of this writing), a bad heating element, or a bad relay. Lastly, it could be faulty wiring or a switch. For the future, please ask additional questions as a new question to keep the threads related to each other.
