The Torre Luigino, Torre Alfredo, Rocket Appartamento TCA, and Lelit Mara X share two defining traits that anchor this entire comparison: each is a heat-exchanger (HX) tank-only espresso machine, and each offers a 3-stage to 4-stage temperature switch for dialing in espresso extraction. Rather than the wide, continuously variable range associated with a traditional PID, these machines offer a small set of carefully selected temperature levels designed to cover the needs of different roasts and brewing styles. The result is a system that provides meaningful temperature control without the complexity, cost, or constant fine-tuning that can come with a full PID setup.

A Look Back: When Each Machine Was First Introduced

Lelit Mara X

Lelit’s first HX model, as well as its first dual-boiler machine, the Diana, came out in late 2013. The original Mara was offered in both PID and non-PID versions, with 1st-Line receiving its first batch in early 2014. Since then, the Mara has undergone numerous changes, from its steam wand and body finish to its temperature-control system. One of the more interesting versions featured a built-in, preset PID system in place of the traditional pressurestat. In 2019, Lelit introduced the Mara X, a major evolution of the Mara that brought a redesigned 1.8-liter stainless-steel HX system, dual temperature probes, and a new approach to temperature management. The Mara X officially debuted at HOST Milan in 2019 and began reaching the market in 2020.

Rocket Appartamento TCA

Our history with Rocket goes back well before the Rocket Espresso name. 1st-Line began working with ECM’s Italian operation in 2003, and following the eventual split that led to the formation of Rocket Espresso in Milan, we briefly carried the Rocket line as well. After shipping-related issues, we decided in 2012 to focus on other lines. A decade later, in 2022, Rocket reached out to us again after addressing the issues that had led us to leave the line, and we agreed to bring Rocket back to 1st-Line. The following year, Rocket introduced the Appartamento TCA, the first major evolution of the popular Appartamento. The TCA retained the compact heat-exchanger design of the original while adding Rocket’s new four-step Temperature Control Adjustment system, allowing users to select different boiler-pressure/temperature settings.

Torre Luigino & Alfredo

Torre is a relatively young name in the espresso-machine market, but the company brings more than 20 years of experience in the design and manufacture of espresso machines. The Luigino was developed as a compact, all-stainless-steel HX machine with professional components, including an E61 group, 1.5-liter copper boiler and heat exchanger. The Alfredo followed as a larger, more refined take on the same basic HX concept, retaining the E61 group and HX boiler while adding its own distinctive all-steel body and professional styling. Over time, Torre refined both platforms with features such as the ergonomic Ergo-Lift lever and Torre Smart PID (TSP) system, which provides four selectable temperature settings, adjustable pre-infusion and ECO mode. 1st-Line first brought the Torre Luigino and Alfredo to the U.S. market in 2023 and is proud to serve as Torre’s U.S. importer.

What Do These Four Machines Have In Common?

Despite their differences, the Torre Luigino, Torre Alfredo, Rocket Appartamento TCA, and Lelit Mara X share several key characteristics that define them as heat exchanger (HX) espresso machines. All four are designed to brew espresso and steam milk simultaneously, making them well suited for preparing multiple beverages without waiting between functions. They feature E61-style groupheads, compact footprints, and durable construction, while offering different approaches to temperature and pressure management. Their combination of traditional design, capable steaming performance, and user-friendly operation makes them popular choices for baristas looking for a balance of performance, simplicity, and value.

Heat Exchange (HX) System & Multi-Stage Temperature Control

All four machines use a heat exchanger (HX) system, allowing you to brew espresso and steam milk simultaneously from a single steam boiler. Each machine also features multi-stage temperature adjustment, which changes the steam boiler pressure and, in turn, influences the brewing temperature of the water passing through the heat exchanger. This gives the user a simple way to adjust brewing temperature to suit different coffees, while maintaining the strong steaming performance and traditional workflow of an HX machine.

E61 Grouphead

All four machines feature the legendary E61 grouphead with a standard 58mm portafilter. Renowned for its thermal stability and consistent extraction, the E61 uses a thermosiphon system to circulate hot water between the boiler and grouphead, helping maintain a stable brewing temperature. Its mechanical pre-infusion also gently saturates the coffee puck before full brewing pressure is applied, promoting a more even and forgiving extraction.

Water Reservoir

All four machines use a removable water reservoir, eliminating the complexity of connecting to a plumbed-in water line. Each reservoir features an open-top design, making it easy to fill and clean as needed. At 1st-Line, we always recommend using a water softener with espresso machines to help reduce mineral buildup and protect the machine’s internal components, regardless of water source.

What Sets These Four Machines Apart?

Boiler & Heating System

While all four machines use a heat-exchanger (HX) system, their boiler size, material, and heating-element wattage vary. The Rocket Appartamento TCA and Lelit Mara X feature larger 1.8-liter boilers, while the Torre Luigino and Alfredo use 1.5-liter boilers. A larger boiler provides greater steam capacity and can help maintain pressure during extended steaming, while a higher-wattage heating element can provide faster heat recovery. The Torre Luigino and Alfredo also feature Steam Boost, which increases heating power when needed to help the boiler recover steam pressure more quickly between uses. Boiler material also plays a role: copper offers excellent thermal conductivity and efficient heat transfer, while stainless steel provides corrosion resistance and durability. Ultimately, these differences work together with each machine’s HX design and temperature-control system to influence heat-up, temperature stability, steam capacity, and recovery.

Grouphead & Flow Control

While all four machines share the E61 grouphead and 58mm portafilter, there are some differences in their flow-control features and grouphead design. The Torre Luigino comes standard with E61 flow control and a grouphead pressure gauge, while the Torre Alfredo has been offered in versions both with and without these features. The Rocket Appartamento TCA and Lelit Mara X do not include flow control as standard, but both are flow-control capable with optional kits available separately. The Torre models also feature a distinctive E61 lever design that positions your hand in front of the grouphead, keeping it away from the hot grouphead while providing a clear path around the cups and steam wand. On flow-control models, the lever also places your hand naturally closer to the flow-control adjustment, helping create a more intuitive and streamlined workflow.

Temperature Control

All four machines provide multiple temperature settings, but the way those settings are selected varies between models. The Lelit Mara X offers three temperature stages that are selected using a simple three-position switch located behind the drip tray. The Rocket Appartamento TCA provides four temperature settings, which are accessed through a programming mode using the E61 brew lever rather than a dedicated switch or display. With the machine off, the brew lever is raised while the machine is turned on, allowing the temperature setting to be selected through the lever and indicator light. The Torre Luigino and Torre Alfredo each offer four temperature stages through the front-mounted TSP control. The settings can be selected directly through the TSP and range from Low to Medium, High, and Hot, corresponding to approximately 90°C, 92°C, 94°C, and 96°C at the group.

Choosing the Right Machine – and the Right Retailer

When choosing an espresso machine, it is important to consider not only the machine itself, but also where you purchase it. Espresso machines are long-term investments that require periodic maintenance, replacement parts, and occasional service. Having access to parts and technical support can make a significant difference throughout the life of the machine.

At 1st-line Equipment, we carry replacement parts for all of the machines discussed in this comparison. If a specific or less-common component is needed, we can also order parts directly from the respective manufacturers. This gives our customers access to both commonly needed replacement parts and manufacturer-specific components when necessary.

Before purchasing an espresso machine, it is worth considering how warranty and repair issues are handled, whether replacement parts are available, and what type of technical support the retailer provides after the sale. The machines may have similar features and specifications on paper, but long-term ownership can also depend on the parts and support available behind the machine.
