Overview
Bezzera Unica Single Boiler Espresso Machine
Bezzera offers a wide selection of espresso machines. From the large Matrix DB (dual boiler) to the compact Aria HX (heat exchanger) , they also offer a lever model in the Strega. For espresso lovers that don’t want a large machine, they offer the Unica SBDU (single boiler, dual use).
One of the keys to great espresso is proper temperature. The Unica features PID controls that keep the water in boiler at a set temperature with minimal fluctuation. The classic E61 grouphead, also helps keep the water temperature stable throughout the extraction process. Also it’s large 3 liter water tank will allow to keep making back to back shots with little interruption. For the occassional cappuccino, you have the option to steam by switching the boiler to steam mode through the PID display. Simply hold the “+” button until the display shows “c -> s”. Just remember to switch back to coffee mode using the same process.
Most SBDU machines are built very basic and don’t have many features that the Unica has. One example is the Rancilio Silvia, which doesn’t have PID controls or an E61 grouphead. So if you are an espresso only lover and want the best of the best (in a SBDU), choose the Bezzera Unica.

Features
- Single boiler machine: Can handle both espresso extractions and steaming functions. To get to steam mode, hold the “+” button on the PID controls until the display shows “c -> s”. Just remember to switch back to coffee mode using the same process.
- PID temperature control: Manages the coffee and steam temperature set by the user.
- The coffee temperature can be programmed between 80° C – 100° C. 93° C is the optimal temperature for medium roasts. For lighter roasts, use hotter temperatures to help extract more flavor. For darker roasts, use cooler temparatures to avoid bitterness.
- The steam temperature can be programmed between 105° C – 120° C. Increasing the temperature will help give you more steaming power.
- Stainless steel body: Polished to a mirror finish.
- E61 grouphead: Hot water circulates from thermosyphon tubes to/from the grouphead and boiler. As a result, this system keeps the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. This is a dual-purpose, single-boiler machine that does not have a heat exchanger. The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds.
- Pump pressure gauge: Indicate the brewing pressure during espresso extraction. Below the pump pressure gauge, there is a ‘P’ switch that powers the pump for hot water delivery through the opened steam wand. The ‘O/I’ switch is for powering up the espresso machine. The light in between is the power light.
- Multi-directional steam wand: Allows for more flexibility. In addition, the joystick controls for the steam wand give an instant on / off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise/counterclockwise. The control locks to fully open in the up position allowing you to use both hands when steaming.
- Powerful vibratory pump: Rated at 15 bar. Please note that you only need 9 bars for espresso.
- Three-way solenoid valve: Allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction and immediately prepares for the next extraction.
- Over pressure valve (OPV): Adjustable.
- Water tank: Very large and removable.
- Passive cup warmer on the top: Heat from the boiler rises and heats the top panel. Like any other espresso machine, it can take up to two hours to preheat your cups. Therefore, it is better to flash heat the cups from hot water from the grouphead or steam/water wand.
- Accessories included: Single spout portafilter, double spout portafilter, 1-cup filter basket, 2-cup filter basket, blind filter basket, plastic tamper, plastic scoop, grouphead cleaning brush, and instruction manual.

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:
- Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
- Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
- Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
- Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
- Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

Hello. Do you do maintenance on the Bezzera expresso machines? We have one in our office and need to get it maintained while our office is closed between Christmas and New Years. We are located in Bethlehem, PA and I could easily drop the machine off at your facility instead of shipping it.

Sorry, at this time, we are only repairing machines that were purchased through 1st-line Equipment.
I just received this product, but it didn't come with the same grate that's pictured here. (The part the mug sits on while coffee is being brewed) what I got is more of a grill. Can someone send me the correct part that was advertised?

We are sorry about this. Bezzera made this change without notification. Unfortunately, we rushed putting inventory into the system as many customers were waiting for our Bezzera shipment. We were not able to update the web site as things move quickly to get machines out. As discussed over the phone with you, we are sorry that we do not have the older style grate and we also reached out to Bezzera which informed us they no longer make the old style grate cover.
As mentioned, many manufacturers tend to make changes without any notification to their importers and dealers. This is one thing we have been batting for years. Again, we are very sorry about this.
Greetings. I just got my Unica and it is a beautiful machine. I’m still dialing in the grind, though. I use a Mazzer Mini and usually grind at 8 for a medium roast (this worked on my Isomac Venus and PV Lusso). The Unica gauges (both the one on the case and the one that I installed on the brewhead) read at 6 or less. I get great crema and it tastes good, but do I need to use a finer grind setting… like 7.5? I don’t want to blow anything up in my first week.

The group head pressure gauge is based on the resistance created in the filter basket - the fineness of the grind, the amount of ground coffee in the basket, AND the tamping pressure. Increase any combination of three, and the pressure should go up.
When will the new updated version of the Unica be ready to purchase ? what difference will the new version have over the current - New PID i know for sure with shot timer but what else will change ? how long before the new version can be had - price ? i am interested in the Unica - thanks

We are unsure as we have not heard of a new version at this time.
In November 2020 I purchased a Bezzera Unica from you folks. I used a dozen times or so. The unit then stayed unused in my kitchen for a little while at which point it was moved to my garage for storage. The unit was placed in a large plastic bag that was tied off in order to keep the unit clean. So, figure that the unit has not been used for about 3 years. If I decided to revisit making espresso with this unit, is there anything I should be aware off or check before using the unit?

Make sure that the pump pulls water from the reservoir. If not, you need to prime it before the unit heats up.
Hi! I have a Unica that I purchased from you on 10/13/17 (invoice #147172) and I am having issues with it making a solid espresso. The pump is working, but it takes about 15 seconds for it start dripping, then it doesn't go past 4bar. If I use the blank for a try, it goes to 12bar but also after about 15-20 seconds. Also, if I flip the pump on it will take about 30-45 seconds for the pump to fill. Let me know how to proceed.

Run a descaler through the group and see if it improves with the blind filter. The 12 bar reached shows the pump reaches full pressure and systems are working. However, it should reach 9 bar in about 9-10 seconds. If still an issue, it may need a new pump.
Hi,
I have Bezzera Unica machine. I made first espresso just fine today. While making second espresso I noticed it showed 0 pressure. I tested it with blind basket and it showed 0 pressure as well but pressure built up since water was released under huge pressure after I turned it off. When you turn it on water comes out slowly. But it seems once boiler was emptied out no water is coming out of the boiler. I had this problem twice in the past. I let the machine sit for weeks and all of the sudden it started working. Could there be something wrong with the pump or perhaps some dirt is blocking something making water not to be pumped?
Here is the video I recorded of the machine: https://youtu.be/1I4ZhI8HpJU
I see you are one of only a few that sells parts for this machine.

Sorry, we are unsure as there could be a bad pump, dirty grouphead, bad OPV, or clog somewhere in the system. The machine should be checked by a professional.

I have a Bezerra Unica and I believe it has a standard E61 group head and it has a nut in the middle of the group head for a pressure gauge. Do you sell a pressure gauge that would fit? I was told by Bezzera that vibe pumps read a little high (11 bar on the built-in gauge) but at the group it should be fine (a proper 9 bars). So, I'd like to confirm this. Also, if you do sell one I was curious if you had one without a brand name on it, like ECM, since the machine is a Bezzera.

We do have one replacement boiler in stock.
Thank you for the reply. However could it be a problem that it takes about 4-5 seconds to get to 3-4 bar? It is an awfully long time. Before after few seconds it went to 9-11 bar depending on the grind. Only with extra fine grind it goes to 9-11 bar however in that case pressures starts bouncing up and down during extraction, e.g. from 8 to 10, 7 to 10, 6 to 9, 9 to 10, etc. And it makes this noise while it is bouncing up and down. If we use good grind as we always it only goes to 3-4 bar and watery espresso comes out. Can I post a link to the video so you can see yourself?

It can take up to 8 seconds to get p to full pressure. The coffee grinds absorbs coffee, as well. The swelling of the coffee and inconsistent grind usually creates the issue you are experiencing.
If you like, the machine can be dropped off for service. Sorry, our roadside techs only work on commercial machines, and we are sorry that they do not want to be responsible for damages to a machine they need transport. We also do not ship machines dropped off for service because it will damaged on the return because we do not have the original packaging. Some clients do use ZipCar.
Hi. Problem is not the grind as we are very familiar with the machine. It worked perfectly up until now. Now the issue is when you start making espresso it takes about 4 seconds to get to 3-4 bar and immediately watery coffee starts coming out, occasionally from 3-4 bar it may go up further to 6-7 bar but by then cup is full with watery coffee. Before when you waited about 4 seconds it went strait to about 10 bar before coffee started coming out. It looks like it is making the coffee wet during the 4 seconds and then water just go through wet coffee and espresso maker does not go above 3-4 bar. This is very strange since with blind filter basket it nicely holds at 10 bar. We have tried all different grinds. It is not the grind. So while the machine has the ability to hold at 10 bar with blind basket, the problem seems that it takes 3-5 seconds after you start making coffee to get to 3-4 bar where watery coffee just goes through fast even at fine grind. Can we bring the machine in for tune up to your facility? Alternatively when you are servicing in jersey city/Hoboken area could we drop it off with your technicians and just go pick it up or pay for return shipping? We do not have a car.

If the blind filter does not replicate the same issue, this issue clearly points to the grind fineness and/or grinder. The blind filter tells us
a) the pump can achieve 10 bar,
b) the OPV opens at 10 bar,
c) the system has no leaks as it maintains 10 bars.
Hence, the machine is fine. We would feel that we would be cheating you if we had to service the machine and found nothing wrong.
We have a Bezzera Unica espresso machine. Everything was working fine until brew pressure from nowhere started bouncing up and down during extractions.
When Unica was working fine, after 2-4 seconds or so after you lift the lever, pressure went up to 10 or 11 bar and nicely stayed in this range without pressure bouncing during the entire extraction, making a perfect cup of espresso.
Here are two problems I am experiencing:
1. When you start making espresso (when you lift the lever) for about 3-4 seconds Unica is making noise, then after 3-4 seconds at about just 2-3 bar coffee already starts coming out, but it is watery, really coffee is flowing at this low pressure, then during extraction it may go up to about 4-5 bar but I have to stop it since the cup is full by now with watery espresso.
2. When you start making espresso (when you lift the lever), for about 3-4 seconds Unica is making noise, then already at about 2-3 bar coffee starts coming out (it should really not until you get to about 10 bar), then it may go up to 8-10 bar, but now pressures starts bouncing up and down during extraction, e.g. from 8 to 10, 7 to 10, 6 to 9, 9 to 10, etc. And it makes this noise while it is bouncing up and down.
2. When you start making espresso (when you lift the lever), for about 3-4 seconds Unica is making noise, then it may go up to 10-11 bar, but now pressures starts bouncing up and down during extraction, e.g. from 8 to 10, 7 to 10, 6 to 9, 9 to 11, etc. And it makes this noise while it is bouncing up and down.
This is what I have done to troubleshoot:
1. Grinding, dose, distribution, and temping is good. Have tried different grinds and temping but it makes no difference. Machine always worked fine and by now I am very much familiar with how Unica should behave with different coffees, grinds, temping, etc.
2. With the blind filter basket in, the brew pressure is steady at about 10 bar. There is no brew pressure bouncing up and down. Just holding nicely at about 10 bar.
3. Unica holds the temperature nicely, do not experience any problems with temperature
There is a similar post about such problem here where the problem was the priming valve:
https://www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/anita-brew-pressure-bouncing-up-and-down-during-extraction-t5555.html
Could it be that it is the priming valve? How do I fix it for the Bezzera Unica? Do you have any parts I can purchase from you or bring it in to your facility? Can someone from your tech department contact me. Thank you.

"With the blind filter basket in, the brew pressure is steady at about 10 bar. There is no brew pressure bouncing up and down. Just holding nicely at about 10 bar."
The blind test tells us that the machine is operating normally. If there was an issue with the machine, it would show up with the blind filter test because this is when the machine is stressed under maximum pressure.
The issue is now pointing to the grinder, the amount of coffee in the basket, or the tamp. Most likely, the issue is the grinder - bad burrs causing inconsistent grind quality. we have seen some cases where the electrical current in the outlet caused the same issue.
