VBM Junior Digital HX Espresso Machine w/ Flow Control
The VBM Domobar Junior Digital NOW has an upgrade from the 2010 VBM Domobar Junior. Thanks to its previous success as a small home heat exchange espresso machine for customers looking to entertain and do a lot of steaming, VBM made some improvements on that original version. First of all, its new design allows you to customize the side panels with different colors, which are available for separate purchase. After all, you can add some unique personality to your espresso machine! Next comes its technological aspect: a new OLED digital display where you can program all your settings and give more simplicity to your machine. The VBM Domobar Junior Digital is overall an excellent home espresso machine for you latte and cappuccino lovers who want an ultra-modern feel to it! Finally, VBM espresso machines are known to have such an incredible E61 grouphead! Customers who see E61 espresso machines absolutely love the structure and robustness.

Features
NEW Digital Interface
- OLED Digital Display: Adjust all your settings on the digital touchpad. After turning the main switch to the ON position, the display shows the selected function (coffee delivery), and the temperature and time of coffee delivery. 128×64 px.
- Button Settings: Shows machine warm-up status. Green means the machine is ready, orange means the machine is loading, and red means the machine is in alarm. Additionally, there is an LED mode for temperature increase and decrease.
- Shows ECO Mode: Use this to increase the espresso machine’s temperature when idle to save energy. After 2 hours of not using the machine, the shutdown symbol will show up on the display.
- Alarm Codes: If there is little to no water inside the boiler, then code E01 shows on the display and an LED light appears in red. Moreover, if there is a probe malfunction, then code E02 appears on the display and an LED light appears in red.
Classic VBM E61 Grouphead
- 58mm: Thermosiphon circulation group in chromed brass, available with manual lever control on the side.
- Constantly heated: Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. As a result, the grouphead temperature is constant and stable when compared to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element.
- Pre-infusion: The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch that turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds. Pulling the lever halfway up will open the valve to allow water into the grouphead without activating the pump. Please note that true pre-infusion requires a direct water connection whereby the water pressure from the waterline creates true pre-infusion.
- NEW Flow control capable: As of 7/1/23 we preinstall a flow control kit on the grouphead ($199 value included!).
Heat Exchange System
- Copper, insulation: The boiler is copper, which retains heat better than stainless steel. Typically copper boilers are more susceptible to limescale when you compare to stainless steel boilers. Therefore, we highly recommend using a water softener. The manufacturer wraps the boiler with insulation for maximum heat retention.
- Pull a shot & steam milk at the same time: Steam is always readily available. Hence, there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
- Auto-shutoff: A sensor detects the water level in the boiler. When below the threshold, the heating element shuts off to prevent it from burning out.
Tank/Reservoir System
- NEW: Water tank level sensor: An empty tank symbol and red LED light show up on the digital interface when it is time to refill your tank. The heating element also shuts off to prevent it from burning out.
- Open top reservoir: Easy to fill. Easy to clean.
Quality Design
- NEW OPTIONAL Customizable side panels: The VBM Domobar Junior Digital NOW has a variety of side panel designs that you can stylize your machine with. Check out the different customizable side panels we have to offer to purchase separately!
- Ergonomic knobs and levers: Contributes to accurate water dispersion and adds some personality to the VBM Domobar Junior Digital!
- Synthetic drip tray: The drip tray on this espresso machine is glowing! Less risk of scratches on this material, unlike on metal drip trays. Additionally, the drip tray has a float that tracks the water levels. Dishwasher-safe.
Front and feet: Stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish.
Vibratory Pump
- Efficient: 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. You only need 9 bars to extract perfect espresso, and wattage has no correlation to longevity.
- Cost-effective: Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will cost less than a rotary vane pump.
Separate Wands for Steam & Hot Water
- Multi-directional: Allows for more movement and flexibility.
- 4-hole steam tip: More holes allow for faster and easier steaming.
- Rotational knobs: Allows for easier control of the intensity to ramp up or down the steam power as needed.

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:
- Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
- Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
- Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
- Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
- Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

The VBM Domobar Junior is approximately 16.75" in height. However, you would require about another 10-11 inches to safely remove the water reservoir for filling, unless you plan to pull the machine out each time you need to add water. We normally recommend at least 2 inches between the top of the machine and cabinets to allow for ventilation. That said, we do have customers that allow only 1 inch.
How would you compare the VBM with the Lelit Mara? The VBM seems like a very good machine - especially at the sale price, but I have not used or seen one. The Lelit brand is highly respected in Denmark and we used one there for 2 weeks and my wife liked it. Obviously the Lelit Mara is significantly more expensive. We currently use a Rancillio Silva (my wife finds it much noisier than the Lelit) and a La Pavoni. Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

From our experience, the VBM Junior Digital has more steam power than the Mara X in coffee mode (separate switch on right side of machine. In steam mode, we feel the VBM still has more steam power.
The VBM Junior Digital has a PID controller to program temperature whereby the Mara X has a 3 stage switch for temperature. The VBM may need a little longer cooling flush than the Mara X when in coffee mode. But, the Mara X needs a cooling flush when in steam mode.
The VBM has a slightly stronger frame. The Mara X has an all stainless steel body, where the VBM has a black body panel with removable stainless steel overlays included.
The Mara X includes a nice tamper whereas the VBM has a plastic one and should be upgraded to your liking as an option, The Mara X has a larger reservoir, but there are two schools of thought. Refilling means less water to build up mold and fungus in the reservoir. Either way, the reservoirs should be cleaned minimum every two weeks.
The biggest advantage is that we have added the flow control on the VBM model, while it is an option on the Mara X. We feel the flow control to control brew pressure at the puck is a major advantage on the VBM for cup quality.

The VBM comes with stainless steel side panels. You have the option to purchase colored panels that attach to the stainless steel side panels with magnets that are included with the machine.
Our VBM Junior is not heating. I replaced the heating coil about six months ago. It now shows 9.2 ohms across the heating coil. Does that mean the coil is not open and not the problem? How do I determine if the Gicar controller is working properly? The SSR seems to working properly. Thx

9.2 ohms seems a little low as 14-20 is optimum, but it is not open. We suggest checking the safety thermostat to see if it tripped and needs to be reset. The figure out why the safety tripped. The PID sensor wire may have been damaged as this would cause a no heat situation.
An experienced person can check the voltage going to the heating element, and usually techs can check the voltage coming out of the board
However, these detailed procedures are not part of our online recommendations as to
a) it is beyond the scope of our free services, and/or
b) we do not want to be liable for any damages or injuries.

All E61 group-heads typically take 20-30 minutes to properly heat up. Some machines can be faster, but then cooling flushes need to occur - wasting a lot of water.
Temperature fluctuations can occur as the environment, electrical voltage, etc can impact the stability. At the current selling price, but it can not compare to a $7,000-$12,000 espresso machine when it comes to temperature stability.

I read through the manual last night and wanted to clarify two instructions: 1. Related to section 9.2 which is entitled "Daily Cleaning". It appears that these instructions indicate after every uses (term used is "AT THE END OF EACH SESSION OF USE) that a backflush should be performed. That seems excessive. I am reading this correctly? 2. In section 9.3 "Controls and Replacements"), the documentation advises "At least every month you need to replace the shower head and gasket". Does this literally meant to replace these items or are they saying that these items should be cleaned and then reinstalled?

1. Related to section 9.2 which is entitled "Daily Cleaning". It appears that these instructions indicate after every uses (term used is "AT THE END OF EACH SESSION OF USE) that a backflush should be performed. That seems excessive. I am reading this correctly?
Yes, they probably mean a short backflush with water only.
2. In section 9.3 "Controls and Replacements"), the documentation advises "At least every month you need to replace the shower head and gasket". Does this literally meant to replace these items or are they saying that these items should be cleaned and then reinstalled?
This is what they recommend since this is considered a commercial machine. It should be back-flushed per this guide and the screen and gasket replaced every 12-24 months or 6 months if there is heavy usage..

So, to get to 15.5" would mean no feet. Not having feet is possible as there is a water line connection on the bottom as well as the ball valve handle is on the bottom.
