ACS Minima Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Overview

After seeing the ACS Minima beginner dual boiler espresso machine in Rimini, Italy at the SIGEP trade show, we had two samples shipped in March of 2019. We were delighted to finally find a tank model, an E61 grouphead espresso machine with powerful steam! We did not want the so-called no-burn steam wands because the steam power would be diminished! The ACS Minima is proudly made in Italy.

  • Steam boiler safety valve is set at 2.5 bar
  • The max temperature is 255° Fahrenheit
  • OPV is set between 9-10 bar

Features
Dual boiler system
  • Simultaneously pull an espresso shot and steam milk – Steam is always readily available. Hence, there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
  • Insulation with stainless steel boiler – The boiler is made of stainless steel which is less susceptible to limescale. Typically stainless steel boilers do not retain their heat as well as copper or brass boilers. This machine compensates that by being wrapped with insulation This helps with temperature stability for the espresso extraction and also helps save energy.
E61 grouphead
  • Pressure gauge from within - Gives a more accurate reading of brew pressure.
  • Consistent heating – Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. This keeps the grouphead at a constant, stable temperature compared to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element. With the heat exchanger/thermosyphon system, only fresh water from the water tank is used for the espresso extraction. The water in the heat exchanger flows to and from the grouphead.
PID control
  • The PID display is used for programming the temperature of both the coffee and steam boilers.
  • Shot timer from within - As soon as you start the espresso extraction, you can view the shot time  on the display screen
Vibratory pump
  • Profitable – Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will cost less than a rotary vane pump.
  • Effective – 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. You only need 9 bar to extract perfect espresso, and wattage has no correlation to longevity.
Tank / reservoir system
  • Automatic turn-off feature – Prevents burning out the heating element. The water tank sits on a spring-activated plate. Once the water is low, the plate depresses the tank microswitch which turns off the heating element.
  • Particle filter – Protects the machine from any unseen particles from entering the boiler. You can remove this filter if you are installing an inline water softener.
Steam & hot water wand
  • Multidirectional wands
  • 2 hole steam tip - effective 8/1/2022, the steam tip has been changed from 3 to 2 hole.
  • Hot water wand that is non-insulated
  • Non-insulated steam wand goes faster throughout the steam.
Construction
  • Drip tray -  The coffee side has a drip tray extender if you are using small espresso cups.  The right side of the front body is angled back. This gives more space for frothing and reduces the chance of burning yourself being further away from the grouphead.
  • Body panel - Stainless steel that is polished to a mirrored finish. Some machines may have a white film which can and only should be removed after testing the Minima espresso machine with water
Accessories included
  • 2 Filter heads: 1 single spout & 1 dual spout; both measuring at 58 mm.
  • Filter baskets: A 1-cup that holds ~ 7 grams of ground coffee and a 2-cup that holds ~14 grams of coffee; both measuring at 58 mm.
  • Rubber insert: Made for backflushing the grouphead. Place this part into the 2-cup filter basket to turn it into a blind basket.
  • Grouphead gasket: Extra gasket that is normally replaced every 6 - 12 months, depending on the usage.
  • Padding: 2 sets of 4 pads for the feet.
  • Drip tray extender: For the purpose of using small espresso cups.
  • Instruction manual: Written in English.

Notes
  1. We test this machine with water prior to shipping out. Your machine may arrive wet. Please let air dry for at least 24 hours prior to turning on.
  2. There can be a white film left over the stainless, depending upon what the manufacturer does. Please do not remove the film until you confirm the machine has arrived in good working condition and without damage.

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer’s defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
  • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
  • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
  • Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you hook this machine up to a direct water line?

Sorry, this machine can only operate as a tank model.

Does this machine have programmable preinfusion like other E61 machines?

Technically no, but here is a response from the manufacturer regarding preinfusion, “This machine is equipped with a vibration pump that is more gentle compared with a rotary pump. Basically, the E61 not have a real preinfusion chamber, but have like an expansion valve that operates at around 5 bars to avoid the shock of the 9 bars that the rotary pump push from the beginning. The vibration pump have a short ramp up of pressure and also the volume of water in the same time is lower so the puck not suffer.”

How long does it take for the machine to come up to temperature for brewing and steaming?

At 110-124 volts, it takes the coffee boiler about 20-25 minutes under a room temperature of 60-70 °F. The steam boiler takes an additional 25-30 minutes.

Are there any special electrical requirements for the machine such as running it through a single outlet surge suppressor and/or a 20 amp circuit?

15 amps should be sufficient if it is a dedicated outlet. 20 amps will work better if a grinder is on the same outlet.

For complete detailed information, please read our article on Power Protection.

  6. Hi, I have a question about the sequential heating order. I noticed in the manual where they are discussing the settings in the advanced menu that the F02 setting could be changed to 5 to prioritize the steam boiler heating, the setting at 4 prioritizes the brew boiler. If I mostly make non-milk drinks and I usually use the switch for brew boiler heating only, but occasionally might want to use the machine just to steam milk for non-coffee drinks, would it makes sense to change this setting to 5 so that on occasion that I want to use the steam, it will heat the steam boiler up first?

Just leave it on brew boiler priority. The priority is for keeping the boilers warm. Last we checked, the brew boiler always heats first. If there will be lots of steaming for catering, cafe use, then steam priority should be selected to lessen the change of running out of steam.

The point of a dual boiler is to manage better temperature stability, especially for the espresso side.

With 220 volts, there is enough voltage to power on both boilers at the same time. This is why most of those machines warm up in 15-20 minutes.

With 110 volts available, there is not enough power at 15 amps, nor safely at 20 amps, to power both boilers which usually is over 2000 watts. Placing in lower wattage heating elements will degrade temperature stability because the boilers will not recover fast enough when the cold water enters either boiler. Using 2000+ watts at 15 amps or even 20 amps can cause electrical wires behind the wall or outlet to get hot and cause a fire. The only other alternative to this is create a 110 volt machine with 30 amp rated power plugs, outlets, and suitable wiring gauge. In 25 years, we never have seen a 30 amp 125+ volt outlet and we do not think anyone is going to install one either for their espresso machine.

Hence, the workaround at 110 volts is to alternate the current between the two boilers. Sequential heating pertains more to the order of heating the boilers one at a time. Most cases, it is the coffee boiler. In some cases, the heat up occurs with alternate current. In a few cases, users can choose to warm up the steam boiler first.

If the water has no where to go, it can exit the OPV which opens into the reservoir. Additionally, pressure can cause the steam boiler refill valve to open which can cause steam to exit the steam boiler safety valve. Backflushes on vibration pump machines should be 10 secs and multiple times.

  18. What are each of the three tubes feeding through the lid of the cylindrical plastic water tank? One, the longest, is an intake/inlet. I’ve attached the inline water softener at its end (after removing the filter basket). Incidentally, what precautions should be taken to ensure that cartridge never creates too much resistance on the pump? The second, the shortest, must be a vent/expansion tube (which is why I see some water in this line despite not below the water level). The third has a circular fitting at its end. I don’t know it’s purpose.

As of current stock of machines (which means can be changed by the manufacturer), there are three hoses int he reservoir. The one with the particle filter (not water softener) is usually the longest. The second hose with the low water level sensor should have the cap positions so it is closest to the point of the body where the three hoses enter the water reservoir chamber. The last hose is the return from the OPV and this should be placed whereby on the tank cover is furthest from where the 3 hoses come into the reservoir chamber.

Yes, on a PID machine, the temperatures need to be brought down in alignment to lower than boiling water at your elevation. For example, we like to extract espresso at about 203-204 d F. So, with this 8-9 d F different, if your boiling point is 200 d F, then set the programmed temperature to be 192.

  24. I purchased a Minima less than a month ago, and until today it worked great. This afternoon the steam boiler completely stopped heating. I've looked through the manual and tried to reset the limit stat (which as far as I could tell had not tripped), but no change. The brew boiler is working just fine, and the PID appears to be showing accurate temperatures for both (indicating that the service boiler is not heating, but is switched on). For background, since purchase, I have always switched the machine onto the dual boiler (down) setting every time I've used it (I almost always make milk drinks). For the first time today I switched it on to espresso only, pulled a shot, and shut it back down. The next time I turned it on, the service boiler appeared to heat up (as it was reading near its 125C set point when I came to make coffee/steam milk), but after draining a bit of water out of the steam wand, as I always do before prepping my shot and milk), I noticed that the service boiler temperature was low (110-115) and slowly dropping. It hasn't worked since. Is this something I can easily fix with a bit of advice? Thank you, Ben

Sorry to read this as this is not typical.

First, what water are you sing,. If purified, distilled, or RO, then the boiler refill sensor may not be getting a signal and overfilling the steam boiler.

Second, with power tot he steam boiler, does the machine trip the GFIC outlet. Please check. if yes, then, too much water may have been removed from the hot water valve at one time and damaged the heating element.

Third, you may need to review the hidden settings of the PID. The instructional manual should advise how to get into this menu.

A 1) I am using remineralized distilled water using the “rpavlis” recipe which adds .1g sodium bicarbonate/Liter of Distilled water. My local water is supposed to be reasonably hard (from city water report), so I would like to avoid scale issues. I did check the refill sensor when I took the top case off by sliding the sensor up and it did trigger a refill, so the sensor appears to be working correctly. 2) with power to the steam boiler the machine does NOT trip a GFIC outlet. I rarely use the hot water outlet and have never drained more than 10-20ml at any one time (just enough to wet a sponge when cleaning up). 3) I have checked the advanced PID settings and manually reset them all to the levels indicated in the manual. Nothing changed. As it seems that water is the only obvious option, what is the easiest way to manually drain the service boiler so I can refill it with filtered tap water? Obviously with no heat to the boiler, I can’t get it to drain water through the hot water or steam valves as there is no pressure.

  34. This issue is still happening: Sometimes(not everytime) when it is turned on it goes through the normal procedure. It heats up the brew boiler to the set temperature then moves on the steam boiler. However, sometimes it will heat the steam boiler much higher than what the PID has it set to, the pressure valve seals and the temperature readings are accurate. For example, I might have it set to 125, but I will see that it is currently heated to 135 and still heating up. Eventually, it heats up so much that the overpressure valve in the steam boiler starts to pop. If I turn the machine off and on again it still sees the same temperatures as before, but it stops trying to heat up more. So I don't think it is the sensor that has a problem, because it accurately reads the temp, but something else seems more likely. Also, for a couple months the problem went completely away, but now it happens almost every time the machine is turned on for the first time in the day. Usually if it is turned off, completely cools down and turned back on it will work properly if it hasn't been a full day.

The PID sensor on the steam boiler can be corroded with limescale or oxidation - especially so if the temperature bounces on the screen . It can be cleaned. With machine cold, the double red wire on top of the large steam boiler needs to have its two pin black connector disconnected.

Then without twisting or bending the double red wire, the nut where the double red wire goes into, needs to be removed with a crescent wrench. The internal potion needs to be wire brushed. Reverse he process to install and test.

Otherwise, replace the PID sensor. In a worst case scenario, the brain unit needs to be replaced or the hating element is damaged.

  44. A few weeks ago my Steam Boiler stopped working. Occasionally I can get it to work by fiddling with the wire that attached from the Boiler to the Gicar, but it overflows, so I just stopped bothering. Its always overflowed since I got it but its erratic; I usually shut it down when it started. I am starting to believe the issues I have had with the steam boiler overflowing (which seems to be once every few weeks) is this cable, and the Gicar pinching the bottom. Do you carry replacement wires for this part or would I have to contact the manufacturer? I am planning on raising the gicar a bit with rubber pads so the wire does not pinch at the bottom. That and a new wire should hopefully resolve the issue.

Answered by the admin A wide variety of espresso coffee grinders will work. To start, the Lelit PL043 would be the base line to start. Grinders from Fiorenzato, Macap, Mazzer, and Eureka (in no particular order) would work as well. The Rancilio Rocky sometimes can not deliver the in between setting grind fineness, so sometimes an adjustment in the amount of ground espresso in the basket needs to occur. The packet type should not be used as it turns calcium and magnesium into salt which is what is used to clear out the cartridge/cylinder water softener.

Sorry, times lines are all in disarray. However, we did get some in.

  64. This issue has only happened about 3 times since I got the machine a few months ago. But I was wondering if there was any way to fix it from happening again. Sometimes when it is turned on it goes through the normal procedure. It heats up the brew boiler and grouphead to the set temperature then moves on the steam boiler. However, sometimes it will heat the steam boiler much higher than what the PID has it set to. For example, I might have it set to 125, but I will see that it is currently heated to 135 and still heating up. Eventually, it heats up so much that the overpressure valve in the steam boiler is released every 15 seconds or so to release the extra pressure caused by the heat. If I turn the machine off and on again it seems to resolve the problem so far. Like I said it only seems to happen maybe 1-2 times a month, but it is enough that I do not want to leave my machine alone while it heats up.

Answered by the admin Sorry to hear about this. It seems the PID sensor on the steam boiler needs to be cleaned with a wire brush. The machine will need to be cooled down and unplugged from the electrical outlet. Remove the top cover by removing the screws. On the larger boiler, there will be a PID sensor with two thin red wires (color can change in future). Please never twist nor pullthe wires as damage will occur and the boiler will not heat. Follow the double red thin wires to the black 2 pin connector and disconnect. Using a small crescent wrench, remove the PID sensor from the top of the boiler ALWAYS allowing the double red wire to spin freely and not twist or crimp. Wire brush the sensor even if it still looks clean as it could a thin film. Re-install and test.

If you want, we can take one off of our demo, but you would need to send the 2 hole to us so we can put it on our demo machine. One of our complaints was that the steam tip could never be fully placed over the drip tray when bleeding. So, if you decide to switch, you will have this issue.

Unfortunately, we are unsure at this time. We did forward your inquiry to ACS. However, since Italy is closed due to the Coronavirus, you may want to contact the person or company you purchased the pre-production machine from as they ultimately should support your inquiry and know the specifications. Answered by the admin

The steam boiler needs steam pressure to push the water on the bottom of the steam boiler through the hot water valve and wand. Hence, the steam boiler needs to be set at 212 degrees F or higher.

In Italy, the hot water valve was created to rinse the portafilter, and not for Americano beverages as North Amercian customers have adapted. Although it can be done on the minima espresso machine, we suggest only remove 4 ounces of water from the hot water valve, then allow the steam boiler to refill before removing another 4 ounces of hot water. This is because if the water level drops too fast on the steam boiler, the steam boiler heating element can get damaged from lack of water. This applies to all HX and double boiler espresso machines with boilers smaller than 4 liters.

Sorry, on new machines, the programmers sometimes forget to ask the technicians about the electrical.

The coffee boiler is 1000 watts. The steam boiler is 1200 watts. The 110 volt current alternates between the two boilers, but not to both at the same time. This allows 15 amp service with minimum 110 volts up to 124 volts out of the outlet with a 15 amp circuit breaker.

We usually say 'should work" because we are not at every remote location to check the amperage rating of the circuit breaker, the age and type of wiring behind the wall, nor the actually voltage coming through the circuit. For examples, some very old homes have may have a 15 amp circuit breaker, but less than 110 volts at the outlet. If the volts are too low for any particular reasons, no 15 amp espresso machine will work correctly and/or potentially cut the circuit breaker. In other words, we have to try to think of every scenario, because there is always that one machine in one customer's home where it will not work... So, we say 'should work"....

We asked the programmer to correct the web site with greater detail.

Not really. There is a three stage switch - off, coffee boiler power on only, and coffee and steam boiler both power on.

Hence, the steam boiler can not be powered on by itself.

A I don’t think that is correct, I think you can switch the steam boiler off. See the review here: https://coffeeequipmentreviews.wordpress.com/2019/03/06/acs-minima-final-production-machine/

There are two switches on the front panel on the Minima espresso machine. The top switch is to start and stop the espresso extraction. The lower switch for power has three positions:

Top - Power on coffee boiler only
    Center - Power completely off
Bottom - Power to BOTH boilers.

Unless we are missing something here, the steam boiler can NOT be turned on INDEPENDENTLY of the coffee boiler. Please review picture below.
