Grinding Adjustment

  • Stepless – Infinite number of grind settings which allows you really fine tune your grind. Adjustment dial is on the right side of the grinder. Turn clockwise for a finer grind and counterclockwise for a coarser grind.

Grinding Operation

  • Semi automatic – The power button is on the left side. To start grinding, push your portafilter against the grinding button above the fork. Press and hold for continuous grinding, and release to stop.

Grinding Burrs

  • Conical Grinding Burrs – 38 mm in size. Spins at a low rpm which generates less heat. Heat buildup can negatively affect your coffee grinds by heating the coffee grinders before brewing.

  1. There is another version of this grinder (PL044MMT) which has a built-in timer. Our version currently does not have this timer.
  2. Every PL044MM espresso coffee grinder is tested with coffee.
  3. A star key (not included) is needed to remove the chute on the front.
  4. The cord plugs into the rear of the unit.

Espresso Coffee Grinder Warnings:

  • Roast Profiles: Espresso grinders sold by 1st-line Equipment, unless specifically indicated on the grinder page, are manufactured for coffee beans that have Italian or espresso roast profiles. Lighter roasted coffee beans may clog the grinder or not grind fine enough. Darker roasted coffee beans, such as French roasted or oily coffee beans, may clog the grinding chamber and/or the grinder chute where the ground coffee exits.
  • Changing grind settings: It is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered on and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. To remedy this, you will have to open up the grinder to get access to the grinding burrs. This issue will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.
  • Electrical cord: For most grinders, the cord is placed between the packaging (foam or cardboard) and the underside body of the grinder. During shipping, it is normal for a bend or insignificant blemish/slice to damage the cord.
  • Finding coffee grinds in a new grinder: Most manufacturers test their grinders with coffee beans before they leave their facility. Unfortunately, they are not always able to get every trace of coffee out of the grinders after testing. As a result, you may find coffee beans or grinds inside your grinder, or there may be grinds in the packaging.
  • Static issues: There are static issues with all grinders, even the highest-quality models. We firmly believe that the static comes from the coffee beans. If you are having static problems with your coffee grinder, try using a different blend of beans.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage (which is not considered a manufacturer's defect), please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. A surge without protection can damage a grinder at the power switch, the capacitor, the motor, or the wiring.
  • Burr cleaning: For routine maintenance of the grinding burrs, we recommend using grinder cleaning agents. We do not recommend any removal of the burrs or the burr carrier for cleaning (unless necessary) as re-assembly can cause damage. If the grinder chamber is dis-assembled, the warranty is voided for any damages that result. It is important to always remove all coffee grinds from the threads of the burr carrier and the grinding chamber.
  • Replacing burrs: NEVER use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to wedge UNDER the burrs for removal. This could badly damage your grinder.

    Sorry, all of the grinders on our web sites do not perform well with lighter roasts.

    3. Is the fine adjustment knob on the right the only way to adjust this grinder? Specifically ...if I wanted to adjust it from an espresso grind to a drip grind would I have to just keep turning the fine adjustment knob through many, many, turns ...or would I be able to simply rotate the hopper itself to a change quickly to a coarse setting?

    Hi,

    This grinder is geared mainly espresso grinding. Although it is capable of grinding for drip coffee, dialing back to your original espresso setting would be very tedious. The hopper is only "friction fit" to the grinding adjustment gear and won't be able to change the grind setting.
    A You can't rotate the hopper, you have to use the adjustment knob. This grinder is primarily for expresso. I've never used it for drip, but I suppose it could be used for that at a coarser setting. I set it at 3 for medium and some dark roasts. You might be able to get away with a 4 or 5 setting grind for drip coffee and that would not be that difficult to change, but I'm guessing. It is a good grinder for my use (expresso/latte).

    Sorry, we are unable to advise on grind retention as it depends upon fineness of grind, oils on beans, etc. Maintenance is the same with respect to cleaning - just a grinder cleaner. As for burr replacement, all of them can be difficult.

    Answered by the admin All the numbers are relative and can not verified. Hence, two grinders at the same exact setting can produce different results with the same coffee bean blend.

    This Fred grinder is less in weight due to the smaller motor, but it makes up in a lot of other areas.

    The Fred has stepless adjustment which allows the user to dial in the grind more precisely over the stepped settings of the Rancilio Rocky espresso grinder. The grind fineness of the Lelit Fred PL044 espresso grinder can give $600+ espresso grinders a run for thier money in terms of grind quality.

    Both grinders do have some retention, and the amount can depend upon the grind fineness.

    The Fred's conical burrs at 38mm would allow more surface area for grinding beans. More surface area usually means more dissipation of heat buildup during the grinding of beans. However, the Rocky burrs do a very good job in grinding.

    The Fred doserless stepless espresso coffee grinders have stainless steel frames and bodies compared to the aluminum frame on the Rancilio Rocky espresso coffee grinders.

    We measured the height to be a little under 13.5".  Close to 13 3/8". This includes the hopper and lid.
