Overview:
1st-line was the first to carry the Technika Profi tank model in 2012, and we asked ECM Germany to manufacture a switchable model which was released later that year. Unlike some internet only companies, 1st-line stocks parts in the event that the machine needs to be serviced. Check out our espresso parts section to see!

The ECM Manufacture Technika IV Profi espresso machine meets form and function with its design in Germany and manufacturing in Italy.

The ECM Manufacture Technika IV Profi espresso machine can switch between a reservoir/tank mode and a direct water line connection. The newest feature is the stainless steel guide rails placed on the black frame so the drip tray does not scratch the black paint on the side rails.

Compared to the ECM Germany Barista, the Technika has wider and refined body panels, upgraded portafilters, and joystick controls for the steam/hot water valves - all of which ultimately cost more to produce.

Although some may call this the Rolls Royce of filter holder machines, it is. For one, Rolls Royce cars are very expensive and they eventually do need repairs - like any espresso machine. Therefore, it is important to purchase from a quality dealer who can service the machine and has the spare parts to service their customers - not one that just sells you a machine.
Features:
  • Solid chrome plated ECM (E61 style) brewing group with small lever action control to start and stop the espresso extraction. The switch that is engaged by the lever is of high quality, as well.
  • The lever on the grouphead allows the operator to pre-infuse the coffee with water from the heat exchanger. Please note that true pre-infusion requires a direct water connection (possible when connected directly to a water line) whereby the water pressure from the water line creates the true pre-infusion.This model has passive pre-infusion when utilized in reservoir mode where the steam pressure in the thermosyphon tubes pushes water through the coffee grind.
  • Professional joystick valve technology on the steam and hot water valves can only be locked in the full on and off position. For in between steam power, the user needs to hold the joystick in place while steaming.
  • With the heat exchanger/thermosyphon system, only fresh water from the water tank is used for the espresso extraction. The water in the heat exchanger flows to and from the grouphead.
  • Body made of polished stainless steel
  • Compact construction with stainless steel boiler. The larger the boiler, the more steaming capacity the user has for entertaining and superior temperature stability over machines with smaller boilers. The end flanges are also made of stainless steel. Please note that there are still other components made of copper and brass inside the machine.
  • High quality heating element produced with a stainless steel flange (part which connects to boiler).
  • Boiler safety valve on top of boiler opens if the boiler goes into overpressure - usually due to calcification of the pressurestat pipe.
  • Rotary vane pump with internal adjustment screw is placed on rubber dampening brackets - please note that sometimes the pump will shift in transport and knock out the reservoir connection under the water reservoir. ECM has placed tie-wraps under the machines, but sometimes these break in transport, too.
  • The overpressure valve (OPV) to release excessive brew pressure.
  • Magnetic float in water reservoir will power off heating element when water level is low.
  • Full size pressurestat properly configured vertical and away from boiler top.
  • Dual safety thermostats in case one fails during a potential overpressure situation.
  • Dual gauges are offer greater visible at top and not hidden near bottom of front panel. There is one gauge for pump/extraction pressure, and one gauge for steam pressure.
  • Portafilter holder made of solid brass and plastic handle with ability to hold 58mm type baskets.
  • Removable drip tray and grate made of polished stainless steel.
  • Multi-directional steam and hot water wands can be moved in multiple directions. The steam wand has a 2-hole steam tip. Also available are a 4-hole, and 5-hole.
  • Grips on wands to protect hands from heat while full size steam wand allows greater steam power over no-burn wands.
  • Low profile black feet allow lowest height capability.
  • The espresso extraction, frothed milk, and hot water can be dispensed simultaneously.
  • Accessories: Single spout 58mm portafilter with single cup filter basket, dual spout 58mm portafilter with double cup filter basket, plastic tamper, plastic measuring scoop, blind filter basket, backflush detergent, and instructional manual.
  • Engineering design in Germany and assembled in Milan, Italy by a third party (not ECM Manufacture).
Specifications:
  • Measurements: 15" H x 12.68" W x 18.58" D (38.1 cm H x 32.2 cm W x 47.2 cm D).
Height with lid open: 19.5" (49.53 cm).
  • Maximum water line pressure should be regulated to be between 1.0 - 1.5 bar for proper operation of this machine. Check with your local plumbing supply to advise on purchase so as to meet any local building codes. In addition, check with them about your local building code may require a backflow preventer (which does not allow boiler water to backflow into water supply).
  • Weight: 51.81 pounds (23.5 kilograms).
  • Power: 1400 watts, 115 volts, 60 hertz.
  • Water tank/reservoir capacity: 0.79 gallons (3 liters).
  • Approximate boiler capacity: 1.8 liters without heat exchanger / 2.1 liters with heat exchanger.
Notes:
  1. Printable manual can be found here.
  2. There is no access to the expansion valve underneath the cup warmer.
  3. Water tank lid is on a hinge. When opened it adds another 4.5" to the height.
  4. Water connection at bottom of machine is in the back left corner ~4" from the rear and ~2.5 inches from the left side panel. The water connection elbow under the machine is 1/4" male thread. The included stainless steel braided hose, is 58" long and has the female fitting to connect to the water connection elbow. On the opposite end of the braided hose, there is a 3/8" female thread fitting. It is best to purchase the V319 coupling on our web site to attach to your water line, and then attach the braided hose to the V319 coupling. There is no drainage capability, nor parts included for this, of the drip tray.
  5. As of July 5, 2013, ECM Germany has confirmed the steam nozzle has 1/8" inner thread. Please note that ECM, like most manufacturers, can make changes without prior notification. Therefore, please check your machine before ordering any steam tips.
  6. When shopping for this espresso machine, please keep in mind that 1st-line Equipment stocks many spare parts for this machine so 1st-line's customers can be serviced if there are any problems. Please keep in mind the selling dealer is responsible dealer in the selling country is for providing the service and warranty. ECM Germany does not have a worldwide labor warranty and will not ship parts directly to customers worldwide. Hence, it is best to check the dealer's web site for spare parts.
  7. Rolls Royce is a trademark of its respective owner.

"A good enough machine, but not without flaws"

Andy S on 7/25/2014 1:05:09 PM

State: Colorado

Review: I have a slightly different assessment than some of the other reviewers, but I do agree that in general this is a good machine. There's no doubt that this is a well-built machine. The rotary pump is very quiet (though there is occasionally some vibration in the drip tray, which on my machine doesn't fit together quite right) and the finishes are excellent. However, I feel that the user experience is a bit lackluster as this is a fairly basic heat exchange sort of machine with no PID or volumetri... More details

"ECM Technika IV"

Taylor W on 4/17/2014 7:46:27 AM

State: Alabama

Review: Couldn't be more happy with this machine! 1st Line and Jim were wonderful to work with, and if you're looking for a great machine under $4,000 or so, then this one will be touch to beat. The stainless steel boiler was an important feature to me, which eliminated most of the options around this same price. The quality of construction is pretty incredible, and far superior to the competitors.

"ECM Technika IV"

Paul F on 3/27/2014 11:59:10 AM

Review: I own 3 other espresso machines. An Electra manual lever, ECM Gioto and Briel Multi-pro. The Briel Multi-pro kept breaking down so I was in the market to buy a replacement. My 12 years old ECM Gioto is still working well and the choice was clear: to buy another ECM Espresso machine. After reading the comments from 1st-Line regarding ECM Germany, I bought the machine. Indeed, this machine is superb in every way and much better than ANY that I own. Solid, heavy duty and beautiful! The coffee I pul... More details

"Exceeded ALL Expectations"

Toni G on 3/21/2014 1:20:56 AM

State: Washington

Review: My beloved ECM Giotto Premium Plus (pre Rocket era) finally bit the dust. It had served me well. The scarcity of parts and technicians willing to revive it 'one more time' made it a little easier part with it. I had considered the new 'Rocket'...that is until I had a chance to do a hands-on at my local dealer. Suffice to say, you'll not catch me spending in excess of 2k for an espresso machine with cheap, squeaky levers. Not going to happen. Weeks go by while I did my online research. The ECM Te... More details

"Fabulous"

Jim F. on 3/10/2014 7:41:38 AM

State: California

Review: I purchased this to replace my Pasquini Livia 90 (also purchased from 1st Line). I don't want this review to seem overdone, but that will be difficult, as the ECM is truly amazing. It's a large machine, but beautiful and beautifully finished in every way. Everything about the machine screams Quality. It makes fantastic espresso; very smooth and rich flavored. It does so with complete repeatability and great temperature stability. The ECM takes about 20 minutes to warm up, after which you can pul... More details

"Rocket who???"

Matt on 2/17/2014 1:42:51 PM

State: Pennsylvania

Review: Day in and day out, I'm amazed at the shots I'm able to pull on my Tecknika. It's simply one of the best, if not THE best HX machines you can buy. Construction is top notch. Not a thing is missed. This thing is literally built like a German tank. Very dependable as well. Every morning (and most nights) when I turn the machine on, it's get's right up to temp in about 30 minutes, and is ready to pull a shot. Over 8 months now that I've owned my ECM, and not a day goes by I don't regret my purchase... More details

"A perfect mini pro espresso"

Ofer D. on 7/13/2013 11:34:02 PM

State: California

Review: The bottom line: Great espresso machine. Very consistent espresso, perfect micro foam. The details: excellent machine, producing perfect cup after cup. I use it with a direct connect - hooked up to a filtered water line so I don't have to worry about refilling the reservoir. Also, my best results for espresso are with Esse Massini coffee beans. On the con side, here's what to watch for: - On delivery, the machine came with a leaky water reservoir, the result of an inappropriate packaging (they w... More details

"review of ECM Technika IV"

Btown espressoguy on 5/6/2013 6:02:27 PM

State: Indiana

Review: I bought this to replace a Gaggia. Jim and Diane sold me on this machine which was more expensive than I had initially wanted to spend...but I can't thank them enough. This machine for the price, is a dream. I'm accustomed to a Rocket at my office. This is hands down a better machine when you compare machines at similar price points. Fit and finish is amazing. There are many impressive details, the quality of the portafilter handles, the construction of the drip tray, the cupholder area, etc. It... More details
