Features

New Style Grouphead

With its compact design, Stone has redesigned their grouphead. You start coffee extraction by rotating the black dial on top. This keeps your hands up and out of the way. Inside the grouphead is a built-in heating element that ensures a hot espresso shot.

Heat Exchange System

This HX’s 1.5 liter copper boiler paired with a powerful 1200 watt heating element results in a very fast warmup time, approximately 10 minutes! There are 2 safety thermostats to prevent from overheating.

Steam Wand

The valve angles out to the right of the machine to keep your hand away from the grouphead. The multidirectional wand has a 2 hole steam tip for a nice slow gradual buildup of microfoam.

Notes

Portafilters included: The Stone comes with 1 dual spout portafilter. The instruction manual makes reference to a single spout portafilter, but that is not included.

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside.   • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale.   • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.

    Since day one the machine I bought to use as my traveling machine and therefore have used rarely tens to vent pressure briefly in between uses while the machine is sitting on but not being used until the next straw. I suspect it might be an overpressure Barrel or the vacuum release now. Should I be expecting this to happen the, the machine is making coffee just fine. Or do I need to open the machine up and find a pressure stack and downward adjusted slightly to avoid this?

    On this particular model, the pressurstat may start to have limescale build up, and the pressurstat may be sticking.This owuld be an overheat and would sound like a locomotive as it does not stop.

    If it stops, the vacuum breaker/bleeder valve is the first place where limescale exhibits itself and tends to leak on and off. This part can usually be descaled outside of the machine. With the machine cold and unplugged from the electrical outlet, the top panel would need to be removed, the complete bleeder valve assembly removed, then the bleeder valve disassemble for descaling. Assemble after descaling, then use plumbers tape for the threads (about 3-4 rotations) then insert into the appropriate location. Test the machine.

    An overheat situation, created by hard water, will have the boiler safety valve open up and whistle. This is a safety feature for the boiler to not explode.

    The issue is that hard water, or limescale in the water, creates a situation where the diaphragm can not sense the steam boiler pressure. In some cases, the limescale will freeze the diaphragm in position where there is no heat allowed. In most cases, limescale freezes the diaphragm where it will not shut off the heating, excessive heat builds up too much steam, then the safety valve on the boiler opens.

    This needs to be corrected before further use as this steam can hit and damage other electrical components.

    Please note this is not a warranty issue but a water quality issue.

    With the machine cold and unplugged from the electrical outlet, please remove the reservoir and right side panel. The tan colored pressurstat will need to be removed from its attached pipe or the looping pipe can be removed from the portion connected to the T pipe connection as pictured. The wire connections should be photographed and then disconnected so the assembly can come out.

    Descaling solution, not Cafiza, or white vinegar should be poured into the pipe or the opening of the pressurstat and allowed to sit for a few hours. This process should happen at least 3-4 times. The pipe and opening of the pressurestat should be rinsed. PLEASE MAKE SURE ONLY HE OPENING GETS DESCALER OR WATER IN THE OPENING ONLY. IF YOU GET SOLUTION ON THE ELECTRICAL PORTION, THE PART CAN BE DAMAGED. IF YOU DOD< PLEASE ALLOW THE PART TO AIR DRY FOR A MINIMUM OF 24 HOURS.

    Place all the parts back in and test the machine.

    After the correction, the water needs to be softened. Do not use distilled, RO (reversed osmosis) nor purified water and especially do not use any water with added minerals in a packet as these waters create overheat issues as explained here.
    3. Hi! I purchased my stone in October and love it! However, within the past weekend, the pressure gauge has seemingly stopped working (shows hand stuck at 0) even though the machine will startup for around 20-30 minutes before I try to get an extraction. I did try to do my routine anyway, and it worked with no issues- but would like to know how to fix the gauge in order to get it to start working properly again and showing between 1-2 bar pressure. Any help you have is greatly appreciated!

    Answered by the admin Chances are there is limescale in the capillary tube. We have made a video and it will be posted as soon as our videographer has completed it. Please note that the gauge is for steam pressure, not pump pressure.
    4. I have a question regarding my Stone Espresso machine. I am currently experiencing an issue where the machine is under pressure but the pressure gauge doesn’t show that it has any pressure at all. Typically I wait 20-30 minutes to use the machine until the pressure gets between 1-2, but unfortunately this weekend the machine pressure gauge has stopped working. It is still pouring a shot well, and frothing milk well, just want to know if there is a troubleshoot or a fix to this problem? Thanks!

    We are sorry to read this. Stopped working is not specific enough. It can mean stuck at zero, stuck at a certain pressure reading, or moving erratically, Please pose a new question.
    5. How do I know when the machine is fully heated and ready to use? I was able to pull 3 great espresso shots successfully! I know it is a short heat up time of 10 minutes, however I'm not sure where on the machine it indicates it has heated up and is ready for use. Thank you!

    The machine is ready after the steam pressure gauge reaches 0.9 bar of pressure.
