ECM Technika V Profi Espresso Machine – PID, HX

Overview:
The Technika Profi V PID is yet another example of ECM Germany’s reputation for creating commercial espresso machines of excellent build quality and prosumer performance. This is the “Profi” or professional, version of the Mechanika. What do you get with this title? A heftier stainless steel E61 grouphead for temperature stability, a rotary vane pump for quieter operation, and the ability to direct plumb the machine if desired. With the Technika PID Profi, ECM allows the home barista to feel like their kitchen is a professional coffee shop!
Now included, a PID Display for individual adjustment of the temperature of the boiler and to indicate the coffee extraction time (shot clock).
Heat exchange system:
  • Stainless steel, insulated – The boiler is made of stainless steel which is less susceptible to limescale. Typically stainless steel boilers do not retain their heat as well as copper or brass boilers. This machine compensates for that by being wrapped with insulation.
  • Pull a shot & steam milk at the same time – Steam is always readily available. Therefore there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
LARGER Separate pressure gauges (compared to the previous non-PID version):
  • Steam pressure gauge – Located on the left. Measures from 0 to 3 bar. Optimal pressure is between 0.8 and 1.1.
  • Brew pressure gauge – Located on the right. Measures from 0 to 16 bar. Optimal pressure is between 8 and 10.
E-61 grouphead:
  • Constantly heated – Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. This keeps the grouphead at a constant, stable temperature compared to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element.
  • Pre-infusion – The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds. When you pull the lever halfway up, it will open the valve to allow water into the grouphead without activating the pump. Please note that true pre-infusion requires the direct water connection whereby the water pressure from the waterline creates true pre-infusion.
Rotary vane pump:
  • Quiet operationRotary pumps are necessary for direct connect capable machines since vibration pumps cannot handle the incoming water pressure. The main benefit that you will experience is that they are a lot quieter.
  • Adjustable Rotary Pump Pressure – No need to remove the body panel to access. The adjustment screw is accessible underneath the machine.
Switchable from the water tank to direct water connection:
  • Easy transition – After hooking up the water line (included) to your machine, all you need to do is activate the switch located behind the drip tray on the left side. Turn to the “1” position.
Steam & hot water wands:
  • Joystick lever handles – Easily pull in any direction for quick activation. Both joysticks will lock in any position for hands-free operation.
  • Multi-directional – Allows for more movement and flexibility.
  • “No burn” – Both wands are insulated to allow you to touch anywhere on the arm. Please note that after very long periods of steaming or pouring hot water, the arm will be too hot to touch. We recommend to only touch the rubber grips on each wand.
  • 2-hole steam tip – Allows for a slow gradual build-up of microfoam.
Accessories included with the ECM Technika PID Profi V Espresso Machine:
  • Portafilters – Single spout portafilter and a dual spout portafilter. Both handles match the style of the grouphead lever and are ergonomically designed with an angle for an easier operation to lock into the grouphead.
  • Filter baskets – 1-cup filter basket which holds approximately 7 grams. 2-cup filter basket which holds approximately 14 grams. Blind filter basket which you can use for backflushing. All basket is 58 mm in diameter.
  • Tamper – A cheap plastic tamper, common for most espresso machines to keep the overall selling price of the machine low. We recommend upgrading to a better tamper.
  • Cleaning brush – Used for cleaning the grouphead. Ergonomically designed with an angle for easier usage. The neck has special ridges to keep hot water from dripping to your hand.
  • Hose – Stainless steel braided. For connecting to a water line.
  • Instruction manual – Written in both German and English. The instructions also work for the Technika.

  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. the lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat or the wiring inside.
  • WATER WARNING: To increase the useful life of and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and without magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled water, purified water, nor reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale.
  • DESCALING WARNING: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. The reason is that too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine.

      Hi. I work at Steamvolt in Chicago as a tech. I currently have a ECM technika I am working on for a customer and looking for a gasket seat for the steam valve that is currently in the machine. It doesn't seem to match up to the same valve that is shown in the parts diagram here. I was wondering if the valve style has changed to multiple parts rather than one valve stem.

      Answered by the admin Sorry, the valve stem may have changed. It is best to ask your customer where the machine was purchased and ask that specific supplier for the parts match up. If the machine was purchased from us and the proof of receipt is provided, we can assist. If purchased elsewhere, the other dealer is responsible for support.

      Sorry, we have not performed any tests to answer this question. Unfortunately, the time we would spend to test this over a 6-12 month period would just increase our costs as well as pricing for both parts.

    8. Hi guys. Just wondering if you guys offer an e61 rebuild kit (gaskets and such) for the ECM Technika IV Profi. I tried buying a generic e61 kit from (competitor ECM dealer name removed), but, some of the o-rings didn't seem to fit correctly. If you don't have a kit, would it be possible for you to tell me which specific o-rings I need to buy? I have to order a new PStat for my machine as well, since mine is on the fritz. Would like to order everything in one shot if possible.

    10. I bought an ECM Technica Profi from 1st line several years ago and now the water tank assembly has developed a leak. I imagine this may be the O-rings, but do you have an assembled water tank that I can purchase? I have seen that with other ECM water tanks, but didn't quite see it for the ECM P6014 (which I think is the Technica Profi's tank). Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

    12. Hi I want to install in line a WBT water filter premium for my ECM Technica IV that I bought several years ago form you (still running well so far). What parts and filter size would you recommend to hook into the water line of a faucet. I am planning to use a T-type 3/8 connector on the cold water line to feet water into the filter and from there to the espresso machine.       Considering the age of the machine, it should be evaluated by a professional. This leak can occur from a defective OPV, a boiler refill probe that needs cleaning, or purified water. Defective solenoid valves usually do not allow any water out when they fail.

      These safety thermostats are very finicky. Next step is to test after machine cuts off heating element. As soon as machine heats up, unplug machine electrical cord from electrical outlet, disconnect one of set of wires from safety, and test for continuity. Perform on second thermostat after reconnecting wires on first thermostat.

      If the thermostats are ok at this point, then allow machine to cool. Check voltage to thermostats. If you are unsure, please email us.

    20. Hi There, I have completed the steps in the previous message. The magnetic float in the machine has been confirmed to be freely moving. I have also plugged the machine into a GFI, for operation, and it was not tripped. Here is a rundown of the last three start ups of the machine: Turned on Machine from a Cold Start (i.e. off for 8+ hours): Machine began to warm up, and ran for about 1 min before the heater stopped warming the tank. It rose to approx. 150 degrees. Shut Machine Down for quick of/on cycle. Upon starting up, machine came to operating temp of 248; was able to use. Machine held temperature for approx. 20 mins with the intermittent on/off cycles needed to hold temp. Then stopped holding temperature. Cycled machine quickly on/off, did not return to normal operations. Turned Machine off for > 1 min, and on second restart the heater turned on and machine returned to 248. Turned Machine on from Cold Start. Initial power on raised water temp from 74 to 149 before the heater stoped. Turned machine off for 30 seconds, turned back on and heater did not turn on. Turned machine off for 10 seconds, turned back on and heater did not turn on. Turned machine off for 20 seconds, turned back on and heater turned on and machine got to operating temperature of 248. Machine held temperature for approx. 20 mins with the intermittent on/off cycles needed to hold temp. Then stopped holding temperature. Turned Machine off/on quickly and machine returned to normal operating temperature. Turned on machine from a cold start. Heater ran for about 90 seconds, brining water to 115. Heater shut off. Quick Restart, Heater did not turn on. Quick Restart, Heater did not turn on. Long Restart, Heater did not turn on. Short Restart, Heater ran for 10 seconds. Quick Restart, Ran Water brew head, and heater for 5 seconds. Ran the brew head for 10 seconds before next restart. Heater turned on for 10 seconds after restart, water Temp is now 147. Long on/off cycle > 1 min, heater came on and machine came to temperature. Machine held temperature for approx. 20 mins with the intermittent on/off cycles needed to hold temp. Then stopped holding temperature. Tried 6 (six) on and off cycles to get the heater to kick back on, would not work. Cycles ranged from quick to 30 seconds off at a time. Would not turn on. Left Machine off for 10 mins, restarted the machine and heater ran for 30 seconds. On/Off Cycle one more time and machine returned to operating temperature of 248. I hope this helps with the diagnosis so the machine can be diagnosed/repaired under warranty. Please let me know what else is needed.

      This points to the safety thermostats. We have experience the ECM line with the ECM safety thermostats haphazardly working and not working. To confirm, the safety thermostats will need to be tested with a multi-meter or continuity tester after the machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet, cooled down, and wires removed one set at a time from each thermostat. These thermostats are under the top cover and on top of the boiler..

      This scenario usually occurs when voltage changes in the outlet occur. We strongly suggest getting a surge suppressor 1080 joules or higher for machine protection.

       

    22. I have had my machine since November 2019, and in the last 3 days it has experienced problems coming to full operational temperature. When the problem started it came to temperature for a few minutes but then it would not maintain temperature. Today, the machine will heat for about 30 seconds and then stop, not fully coming to temperature. Both the green and orange lights are illuminated. When you lift the brew lever, the pump will activate, and the machine will dispense warm water.

      There could be several areas that cause this issue.

      First, please check the magnetic float in the reservoir. Make sure it floats upwards when the water tank is full.

      Second, plug the unit into a GFIC outlet that has a test and reset button. If it trips this outlet, it may be a heating element that burned up due to lack of water inside the boiler.

      Third, please tabulate how many minutes after start up after the machine stops heating. If not consistent, then the safety thermostats may have been hit with an electrical surge and need replacement, If consistent in timing, it may be a brain unit hit with an electrical surge. We say electrical surges because this is what usually happens to electrical parts,

      A My machine is 15 1/4" with the feet totally screwed in. There is no cabinet above the unit. You would not be able to put cups on the top nor raise the reservoir flap if under a 16" cabinet. Not sure about clearance if you plumb it. BTW I love this machine. Its a brute and always perfect pulls.
    26. How accurate is the brew temperature on this machine? If understand the heat exchange machines correctly the PID is controlling the steam boiler not the brewing temperature. How does it maintain a consistent brew temperature? I make 4 cappuccinos a day 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening so I need to have a decent steam power. Is this machine good for my needs?

      The PID usually works better in temperature management than a pressurstat which has a slightly wider variation or delay before kicking the heating element on.

      Some people question if it is worth it to have the PID. We believe it does offer a better temperature control, but not as good as a dual boiler. The heat exchanger espresso machines, like the ECM Profi Techika PID espresso machines do offer quicker warm up times over double boilers and more efficiency in the steaming/frothing function.       For 1st-line Equipment, we do allow the balance of the limited warranty period to the new owner as long as the new owner has your purchase information and original receipt. Please note other dealers may have different policies and/or costs associated with the transfer, if they allow it.
