BILT Osmotic Scale Reduction Cloth Pack – small

The Bilt Osmotic Scale Reduction Cloth Pack (O.Sca.R. or Oscar 90) is an innovative product for helping reduce limescale in your espresso machine. It converts the calcium and magnesium ions into low-level sodium ions (<150 mg/liter). In other words, it works similarly to a limescale inhibitor.

The Oscar 90 cloth pack is very easy to use. Remove the pack from the plastic bag. Rinse the pack under cold water to remove any sediment. Place it in the water tank of your espresso machine or a pitcher filled with the water you are going to use. That’s it! No special procedures.

Specifications:

  • Size: 10 mm x 12 mm.
  • For 1 – 2 liter reservoirs.
  • Operates between 5 and 40 degrees celsius water temperature.
  • Meets FDA requirements (Heading 21, Section 173.25, par. A. Sub 1).

Instructions:

  1. Remove the pack from the plastic bag.
  2. Rinse under cold water to remove any sediment.
  3. Place in a pitcher or the reservoir of your espresso machine.

Notes:

  • This product is not re-generable.
  • The manufacturer recommends replacing once a year. We recommend changing every 6 months to reduce the chances of bacteria growth that can occur.
  • This pack will not fit in all reservoirs for espresso machines. The reservoir must be fully open for this product to be easily put in and removed. Some reservoirs have a only small opening for a water hose to go in.
  • The pack should not be placed in a boiler vessel that has a heating element. It is only meant to be in cold water.

The product description says the cloth pack can be left in the reservoir for 6 months while the YT video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snJRI18xJLU) instructs one to prepare 1 pitcher of water a time and then add to the reservoir. Which is it? I'd prefer to leave it in my reservoir. Second, can I use this with an inline water softener on a Bianca?

Answered by the admin The problem in the tank is the water is softened AFTER 15 hours. So, if you fill the reservoir and use the machine in less than 15 hours, the water is not softened. We suggest NOT using these paks with an inline softener as the salt created will neutralize the in line water softener.

Assuming is not always good. That is the production date. We bring them in super large batches to keep costs down as shipping 12 small batches from Italy costs a lot more than bringing in 1 shipment for the year.

The expiration date, per the manufacturer, starts at day of first use. Our expiration  date is 6 months from the date of first use.

A I've thrown the box out, but have been using these for a few years now. I remember the instructions were to replace once a year.

Although the manufacturer recommends replacement once per year, this is one of the few cases where we recommend replacement sooner - every 6 months. The reason is the effectiveness can last one year after the initial start of use, but we want every customer to be cautious because, like refrigerator filters, of potential for bacteria, mold, and fungal build up.
