Crafting the Perfect Cold Fashioned: A Bourbon-Infused Coffee Cocktail

Nothing goes together better than coffee and bourbon! We concocted a delicious caffeinated take on a traditional Old Fashioned, using cold-brew coffee to make what we’re calling the “Cold Fashioned”! We were inspired to create this cocktail for Father’s Day, but this can be enjoyed by any bourbon lover all year long!

We used cold-brew coffee for this recipe because we find the process of cold brew makes the coffee less acidic and have a smoother flavor profile, but you can used any chilled strong coffee you may have. We also love the flavor of the molasses in light brown sugar, but regular granulated sugar can be used to make the simple syrup. Or if you want to go the traditional route, use a sugar cube!

Here’s how it’s done!

What you’ll need:

  • 2 oz cold brew coffee or chilled strongly brewed coffee
  • 1 1/2 oz bourbon
  • 1 tbs light brown sugar or granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • dash aromatic bitters
  • 1 orange
  • water
  • rocks glass, or similar glass
  • spoon

  1. To make the simple syrup, mix equal parts sugar and water until sugar is completely dissolved. We find that using warm water helps this process go a little faster, just make sure the syrup is cool before going on to the next step! Once cool, add it into your cup.
  1. Pour 1 1/2 oz of bourbon into into the glass.

  1. Put either one large ice cube, or a few cubes into glass. Gently stir the contents together.
  2. Cut off a section of the rind of the orange. Twist the rind over the glass to release the oils from the orange into the beverage. Then, trace the edge of the glass with orange twist.  Once done, plop the orange twist into the glass for garnish.
  3. Sip, and enjoy!
