Every now and then you will want to thoroughly clean your portafilter by removing the filter basket and cleaning the inside of the filter head. You may find that the filter basket is hard to remove. This is due to a spring that holds it in place. Without the spring, your filter basket will stick to the grouphead when you remove your portafilter.

Here is an easy way to remove the filter basket from your portafilter without breaking a nail. Using another filter basket, pry the rim between the lips of the portafilter and the installed basket. The inserted basket will come out easily. Your espresso machine usually comes with more than 1 filter basket. If you do not have one, a butter knife will also work.
