When you open the EASY-Vent flushing valve on a BWT Besthead FLEX, water is not diverted exclusively to the flush port. Instead, the flush valve acts as an auxiliary, parallel branch connected directly to the output side of the filter cartridge.
Why this happens
- Parallel Internal Pathways: Opening the flush valve simply drops the pressure on the exhaust side by opening a path of least resistance. It does not act as a traditional “diverter” valve that closes one path to open another.
- Downstream Backpressure: Because the flush valve vents directly to open air (such as a bucket or drain), water naturally rushes out of it quickly. However, if your downstream appliance (e.g., an espresso machine or vending loop) is not completely shut off or pressurized to equilibrium, the incoming line pressure will push water through the main output connector at the same time
- Designed for Purging Air: The valve is primarily intended to act as an easy vent to clear out trapped air and fine sediment when installing a new cartridge. It is not designed to isolate the downstream machine
If you need to flush your filter cartridge without sending water or loose sediment into your connected equipment, you should manually close the downstream shut-off valve (or the manual inlet valve on your appliance) before opening the EASY-Vent valve. This forces 100% of the water through the flush line.
