Notes
- Before shipping: We open every Bezzera box to inspect the machine and add additional packaging inside the box for safer transport. We then place the Bezzera box into a larger box.
- Some assembly required: The lever handle needs to be hand screwed on and the Allen key screw needs to tighten into the hole to hold the lever handle in place. Last we checked, the Allen key and Allen key screw are included in a small bag in the accessories box.
- Manual Drain Valve: Starting with serial number NP01815321 and higher (until further notice from Bezzera and it may change again without notice), the minimum water level probe in the boiler has been removed. A manual drain valve has been added.
Espresso Coffee Grinder Warnings:
- Roast Profiles: Espresso grinders sold by 1st-line Equipment, unless specifically indicated on the grinder page, are manufactured for coffee beans that have Italian or espresso roast profiles. Lighter roasted coffee beans may clog the grinder or not grind fine enough. Darker roasted coffee beans, such as French roasted or oily coffee beans, may clog the grinding chamber and/or the grinder chute where the ground coffee exits.
- Changing grind settings: It is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered on and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. To remedy this, you will have to open up the grinder to get access to the grinding burrs. This issue will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.
- Electrical cord: For most grinders, the cord is placed between the packaging (foam or cardboard) and the underside body of the grinder. During shipping, it is normal for a bend or insignificant blemish/slice to damage the cord.
- Finding coffee grinds in a new grinder: Most manufacturers test their grinders with coffee beans before they leave their facility. Unfortunately, they are not always able to get every trace of coffee out of the grinders after testing. As a result, you may find coffee beans or grinds inside your grinder, or there may be grinds in the packaging.
- Static issues: There are static issues with all grinders, even the highest-quality models. We firmly believe that the static comes from the coffee beans. If you are having static problems with your coffee grinder, try using a different blend of beans.
- Electrical: To avoid electrical damage (which is not considered a manufacturer's defect), please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. A surge without protection can damage a grinder at the power switch, the capacitor, the motor, or the wiring.
- Burr cleaning: For routine maintenance of the grinding burrs, we recommend using grinder cleaning agents. We do not recommend any removal of the burrs or the burr carrier for cleaning (unless necessary) as re-assembly can cause damage. If the grinder chamber is dis-assembled, the warranty is voided for any damages that result. It is important to always remove all coffee grinds from the threads of the burr carrier and the grinding chamber.
- Replacing burrs: NEVER use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to wedge UNDER the burrs for removal. This could badly damage your grinder.

Does the Strega use a standard 58mm portafilter like an E61 machine - or is the portafilter special for the Strega? I'm asking as I like a bottomless and want to know if I can use the one from my E61. If not, do you sell a bottomless for the Strega?

Hi,
The lips on the filter head are in a different position than most other portafilters. Here is a link to the Strega bottomless portafilter.
Hey:) I am trying to locate some clear instructions for the descaling process for my Bezzera Strega. I have the tablets but running into conflicting info online. Thanks for some direction! P.S. My daughter and her husband are looking for a good beginner machine under $500. What would you recommend?

It depends on which exact Strega you have. Sorry, under $500 is a mass market price point and below our standards for build quality and in the cup.
I own a bezzera strega and recently the plastic water tank is leaking thru the valve on the bottom, and the screen filter attached to the valve is also breaking apart. Can I purchase replacement part for the valve or do I have to buy the whole water tank?

I purchased my Strega from 1st Line in January 2012, and have enjoyed many years of amazing performance. As someone who has rebuilt and sold many commercial espresso machines over the years, I have been meticulous in maintaining my Strega. Recently, the piston has exhibited drag upon pulling a shot, and the lever motion is jerky as the piston descends and the lever rises. I have always kept the piston seals lubed (with DOW 111) and have also replace and lubed the piston seals. I just disassembled and removed the the piston from the Lever Group Body (LGB) (part no. 5283052CM), and noticed black deposits along the circumference of interior cylinder walls of the LGB in the area where the piston travels. These deposits do not rub off, are not dissolved by acetone or Joe Glo, or vinegar, etc. I have just ordered new piston seals, but before I install them, I'd like to clean the deposits on the inside cylinder wall so that the piston will travel smoothly. Can you suggest how I can clean the deposits? I considered using a fine grade emery cloth, steel wool, wet/dry sandpaper, etc., but I don't want to damage the LGB and have to replace it. I'd appreciate your advice and recommendations regarding methods to remove the deposits and what 'grit' abrasive to use. Thanks for your assistance - Rick

Read more answer nowAsked by on May 19, 2021 5:35 pmAnswered by the admin Sorry for the delay as we have an overwhelming amount of questions. Sorry, we would need to physically inspect the issue. As we advised you over the phone, emery may damage the internals.
I had a question regarding Strega, when it’s time to replace a pump what the cost is for vibration pumps on the Minima vs a Rotary on the VBM.

Sorry, we can never predict pricing in the future as pump prices can change. In general, vibration pumps range from as low as $19 all the way up to $129. Rotary vane pumps can range from as little as $139 and up depending upon the pump.
1) What is the difference between the TOP version and the Tank? Is it only that the TOP version can be plumbed in? Are there any other differences?
2) The stainless steel boiler is important to me. Can you confirm that this machine has a stainless boiler and not a copper boiler?
3) Do you know what improvements Bezzera made to the V2 version? The only thing I can see is that the lights look different from version one.

Basically, the TOP version can be plumbed. Last we checked, the boiler is copper, unless they changed it without telling us. Sorry, we can no longer remember the changes made from V1 to V2 as it was a long time ago.
Hello, I have a Strega TOP and ordered pressure switch P302/6 per page 23, POS 31, Code 743301 of the parts diagram on your site. Just received it and it definitely won't fit the machine and isn't the same size/shape of the P303T01 that came out of it. Called in to get more information about this and was told to post here. Please advise.

As our web site states, one needs to check the parts inside their machine BEFORE ordering. One needs to check the part against the picture of the machine.
The P303T01 pressurstat is NOT installed the TOP version of the Strega espresso machine. The picture in the diagram shows the square shaped one. The P303T01 is more of a cyclinder type Mater version. Since there is NO record of you buying the machine from us, we are unsure if you need the 1/8th or 1/4 threaded version.
I received my Bezzera Strega recently. I am new to the espresso community and only knew what I had learned during my research in choosing this machine.
The yellow light (pressure) keeps cycling on and off again and again. My routine is this: I turn the machine on, wait for it to warm up. Sometimes it has worked as it should, other times and, most frustratingly, the yellow light will cycle off just as I pull the lever down to fill the head with water. The result is that the water is trapped inside the head, won't drip through and releasing the portafilter is a nightmare. It obviously has pressure trapped and forces the gasket in the head loose.

Read more answer nowAsked by on June 15, 2020 5:39 pmAnswered by the admin This can be caused by water that is too pure - distilled, reverse osmosis, or purified. This will typically shut down the pump as well. The heater will turn on and off based on the pressure (heat reading) in the boiler. As the boiler cools, it will turn on the heat. This will not shut down the pump. The Strega does not have a solenoid valve, just like any other manual lever machine. Hence up to 10 seconds are needed before removing the portafilter. In addition, your grind fineness may be too fine. Please watch our videos.
once in a great while, (every 12 months or so), my bezzera strega, heating element doesn't shut off, and the pressure goes sky-high. you can hear the machine starting to make funny groaning noises. it's quite frightening.
turning it off and then back on seems the fix the issue, tho the last time it happened, i had to turn it on/off three times before the heater would shut off when it reached ~1.3bar. and the 1st two times, you could hear a relay click at 1.3bar, but the pressure just kept climbing.
any ideas what this could be and what can be done to stop it? it's been getting very good water - ~20ppm solids. i haven't opened it up to look for scale, but a pasquini livia i have uses the same water, and i opened it up after several years of usage and there was no scale whatsoever inside it.
i purchased this 2nd hand from the original owner in ~2014; it was purchased from 1st line in ~2012.

It sounds like the pressurestat is sticking or clogged.
See my previous thread. I'm stumped. The problem is intermittent random failure of the pressure regulation system, so that I have to turn the machine off before it hits auto turn off. I've descaled regularly, put in a new pressurestat, put in a new hose from pressurestat to pump. I've brought it to a couple of people here in SF but they have no new ideas. So I'm checking in again with you. Is there anything left for me to look at. I love the machine, when it works

Sorry, in some cases, without evaluating the machine, some intermittent problems can be a needle-in-the-haystack to find. We usually get those machines in here and it can take a several weeks to get the problem to occur and solve it.

Open the steam wand, warm up for 30 minutes, and check if steam comes out. If it does not, it could be a damaged vacuum valve, bad heating element, a bad pressurstat, or a fault with the electronics.
Is the only difference between the Bezzera Strega machines the direct water connect vs. the tank only? Can I lift it onto the counter and add the extra weights in the machine after? 69lbs is pretty heavy. Would you recommend I look at any other lever machines for a comparison?

The Strega is a great machine. Correct, one is a tank model and the other is switchable to be used as a tank or direct plumb.
There are weights inside the machine and we do not recommend taking the machine apart.
I continue to have a problem with pressure regulation despite replacing the pressurestat. About every 8th time the pressure blows past 2.5 and I have to turn the machine off. The techs I brought it to can’t help me further, in part bc the problem doesn’t happen with them. So, is there other reasons for this problem I should look into? It’s plugged into a grounded outlet.

Thanks for the inquiry. This answer is specifically for the tank only version, and NOT the plumbable version as the plumbed in machine may have an issue with the water line pressure.
In the tank only model, this overheating pressure can happen because of the following:
a) Water too pure, refill probe on top of boiler is corroded, refill probe wire connection is faulty - in all of these cases, the brain unit will send water to the boiler that has steam and hot water. When there is incoming water, the steam needs a place to escape - this blows out the safety valve and the steam pressure gauge will rise to 2.5 which is the typical setting for the safety valve to open. You will know if this is the issue if the pump engages to fill the boielr prior to the steam pressure climbing,
b) The pipe from the boiler is partially clogged and clogging fully in certain instances,
c) If your machine had scale build up and if it was not removed before a new pressurstat installation, the scale can damage the new pressurstat quite quickly.
I recently purchased a new presurestat from you because my machine intermittently blew tpast 1.5and I had to turn it off. The same problem is happening again, so I don't think the problem is the pressurestat. Advice?

It can be the heating element or pressurstat. In some cases, if the heating element has leakage to ground, it can cause an overheat situation. Plug the machine into a GFI outlet to test for leakage to ground.
If a previous pressurstat became faulty because of limescale on the diaphragm inside the pressurstat, it is highly possible to happen again very soon on the new switch. This is why a descaling of the boiler should occur before any pressurstat replacement.

It is always best to check the model pump inside your machine and search our web site for the correct replacement. The reason is that many manufacturers have changed pumps in their machines without notice. In most cases, it is an ULKA pump, but the wattage (52 vs 41) may be different.
In previous thread you suggested I clean the pressurestat (the machine overheats) and order a new part. So, can you advise me how to remove the part? Also, what part # should I order? I bought this machine from you 5 years ago.

Please look at the diagrams to see the part that matches your machine. There is more than one version pressurstat.
As for replacement, the machine should be unplugged, water shut off if plumbed, reservoir removed, and take off the top cover to access the pressurstat.
