These test strips, which are great for our espresso machines, easily get dipped for one second into the water you are testing. Excess water is shaken off, and the test strip is checked at a one minute interval after dipping.
It is a good idea to monitor your water for hardness every three months as bottling companies as well as public water utilities have changes throughout the year.
There are four bars. If none of the bars turn red, your water hardness is less than 3 French degrees. If one bar turns red, your water hardness is between 4 and 7 French degrees. If two bars turns red, your water hardness is between 7 and 14 French degrees. If three bars turns red, your water hardness is between 14 and 21 French degrees. If four bars turns red, your water hardness is greater than 21 French degrees.
If none or one bar turns red, we recommend once a month descaling of your espresso machine or coffee maker. If two bars turn red, we recommend twice a month descaling of your espresso machine or coffee maker. If three or four bars turn red, we strongly recommend you change your water.
