Roasting green coffee beans is an art form and a science. Here is a quick look at a very practiced and subtle undertaking. Best roasting practices include roasting each bean type separately. After the roasting period, and a taste test, you can blend different types together to make any number of custom tastes. For example, Colombia Excelso’s beans that deliver full-body, medium to high acidity, and a strong aroma. And, Fattobene’s “Refined” Roasted Whole Coffee Bean Blend with a mild sweetness and very desirable chocolate aftertaste.

Another popular method is roasting different types of beans together. To be effective, the beans must mix together for at least two weeks before roasting. Before serving, the mixture should set for about a week to allow the carbon dioxide to dissipate from the beans.

Green coffee beans come in two categories: Robusta and Aribica. Robusta beans are grown within 3,000 feet of sea level. Aribica beans are grown above 3,000 feet. Robustas are typically found in espresso blends because of the superior crema they provide. Aribica beans provide a more enhanced flavor profile that many taste buds enjoy.

With over a dozen 1st-Cup Coffee blends available, you’ll find the beans you want in a wide variety of flavors and profiles.

To give you an idea of the variety available, we offer beans so unique that they are harvested from coffee seeds after being exposed to yearly monsoon rain and winds for three to four months off the Malabar Coast of Kanataka and Kerala in India. The exposure causes the beans to swell and lose their original acidity, resulting in a neutral flavor profile. Called Monsooned Malabar coffee beans, this is just an example of what goes into making that great 1st cup every day.
