Macap M42M Programmable Stepless Doserless Espresso Coffee Grinder

The Macap M42M has the same features as the previous M4 model along with an updated look. Stepless adjustment is now standard on the Macap M42M as opposed to the M4 which needed to be special requested. The fingerguard of the bean hopper has been redesigned to help beans flow through easier while still protecting your fingers. The adjustment dial numbers a printed with a light color which makes it a lot easier to read.

Electronic / On demand grinding
  • Dual mode – The Macap M42M can switch between semi-automatic and on demand grinding. On the right side of the grinder, there are 2 switches. The one on the right is the power switch. The one on the left switches between the 2 modes. The “M” position is for semi-automatic grinding. The “T” position is for on demand grinding.
  • Programmable – To the right of the coffee chute is the programmable adjustment knob. It adjusts the length of time when grinding on demand. Turning clockwise to a lower number will decrease the grinding time. Turning counterclockwise to a higher number will increase the grinding time.
  • Single / Double dosing – Underneath the coffee chute is a red button. This starts the grinding process. When semi-automatic grinding, press and hold until you have the amount of ground coffee desired. When grinding on demand, press once for a single dose or twice for a double dose.
Grinding adjustment
  • Stepless – Gives you access to an “infinite” number of grind settings. This allows you really fine tune your grind fineness of your coffee beans. The numbered dial underneath the hopper helps you remember your current grind setting easier.
  • Adjustment knob – Located in the rear of the machine just below the hopper. There are 2 knobs on both sides. When using the right knob, turning clockwise will make the grind finer. Turning counterclockwise will make the grind coarser.
Grinding burrs
  • Flat burrs – Large size at 58 mm. The larger the size, the more of a grinding surface, resulting in faster production.
  • High rpm – Faster spinning rate at 1400 rpm. The higher the speed, the faster the production, which can increase efficiency and reduce wait times.
  • Easy access – Remove the bean hopper. Unscrew the numbered dial and hopper screw. Turn the upper burr holder clockwise until the top assembly comes off. This will give you access to the burrs and the grinding chamber. The burrs themselves are held in with Philips head screws.
Bean hopper
  • Low profile – The total height of the grinder without the hopper is a little under 12 inches. The bean hopper adds another 5 inches bringing the total height to approximately 17 inches. The total capacity is approximately 1.1 pounds of whole coffee beans, about half the size of a standard kilo bag.
  • Tinted – Helps to avoid pre-mature deterioration of beans from light sources (such as sunlight).
  • Set screw – Secures the hopper to the grinder. Serves as a reminder for users from quickly removing the hopper if it is full of beans.
  • Finger guard – Prevents users from “accidentally” putting their fingers in the grinding burrs.
  • Stopper – A door near the bottom of the hopper can be pushed in to close the opening. This allows you to remove the hopper with beans inside so you can easily change the beans. There will be some beans already passed in the burrs which will have to be ground out first before removing the hopper.
Portafilter fork
  • Ease of use – Accommodates most portafilters. The clearance from the fork to the funnel is approximately 2.75 inches.
  • Hands free – Above the fork is a hook that your portafilter can rest on. This allows for practically hands free operation, aside from pushing forward to start the grinding process. The hook is adjustable to fit any size portafilter head. There is an Allen key screw (~2.6 mm) that holds the hook in place.
  • Container grinding – The fork is not easily removable. However it does not stick too far out from the grinder (~2.25 inches). Also the coffee chute is wider than other grinders. This makes grinding into a large container no problem.
Grinds catch tray
  • Easy to “install” – Hooks onto the front foot underneath the grinder. This helps keep the tray from sliding away.
  • Convenient – As easy as it is to install, it’s just as easy to remove to discard any excess grinds. There are other comparable models that do not have a tray at all.
Instruction manual
  • Written in 6 languages: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish. Instructions also work for the M42, MC42, & M42D.

  1. Changing grind settings: As with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered ‘on’ and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result occurs, this will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.
  2. Finding coffee grinds in a new grinder: We have confirmed that the manufacturer tests EVERY grinder with coffee beans before it leaves their facility, but they are not always able to get every trace of coffee out of the grinders after testing. As a result, you may find coffee beans or grinds inside your grinder, or there may be grinds in the packaging when you unwrap it.
  3. Static issues: There are static issues with all grinders, even the highest quality models. We firmly believe that the static comes from the coffee beans. If you are having static problems with your coffee grinder, trying using a different blend of beans.
  4. Replacing burrs: NEVER use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to wedge under the burrs for removal. This could badly damage your grinder.
  5. Electrical cord: Please note that the electrical cord is placed between the packaging (foam or cardboard) and the underside body of the grinder. During shipping, it is normal for a bend or insignificant blemish / slice to damage the cord.

    1. Manual switch models: These models are no longer being produced by the factory.
    2. Macap grinders are considered commercial equipment for grinding coffee only and cannot be returned once used.
    3. Cleaning: Before 1st use, we recommend to clean the bean hopper and covers with a mild, non-abrasive soap.
    4. Retrofitting: Sorry, there is no retro kit available to upgrade older grinders.

Espresso Grinder Warning

  • CLEANING WARNING: We recommend using grinder cleaning agents. We do not recommend any removal of the burrs or burr carrier for cleaning as re-assembly can cause damage.
  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso grinder which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. The lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso grinder can be damaged at the power switch, the capacitor, the motor, or the wiring.

Dear 1st Line, I have this grinder, and would really love to upgrade the burrs to the SSP Red Speed burrs, but it says they are designed for the Mazzer Mini Manual. Do you know if they will fit this too? Warmest regards, Finn

Sorry, as far as we know, they do not fit.

    2. This is a follow up to the question above. The grinder is still having the same problem. This morning I tried to use it and after roughly a second it stopped (no prior use this morning). If I release the button and try again it will try to grind some but seems to be having difficulty for some reason. The solution I found was to make the grind more coarse and push the button a few times while it slowly ground the few beans that were in there. Once the beans are gone the grinder spins without issue. I don't hear anything between the burrs so it seems unlikely there's something in there like a rock, bolt, etc.

Try a different outlet. Making the grinder work at a coarser setting may be an indication of a foreign object. The top burr carrier should be removed and the grinding chamber inspected. Please remember when threading back the tup burr, all grinds need to be removed from both threads with cotton swabs. Any leftover grinds can damage the threads.

    4. The grinder stopped spinning while I was using it. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and tried again, and it spins, but I haven't run it with any beans in it since it happened. Could there be something wrong with the grinder? Is there something I should check before using it again?

This Macap espresso coffee grinder has a thermal safety device if it is running for too long. The safety device diminishes motor damage from overheating. Letting the Macap M42M espresso coffee grinder to sit idle allowed the unit to cool and reset the thermal safety device.

The M42M espresso coffee grinder can also stop spinning if there are rocks, stones, cement, bolts or other undesirable objects that can jam between the two burrs and stop the motor. However, the motor will not restart until the undesirable objects are removed from the espresso coffee grinder.
