Macap CPS Dynamometric Tamper

The MACAP CPS (Constant Pressure System) automatic espresso tamper is an innovation for streamlining espresso production. It helps conform all users to utilize the same tamp pressure. Using a lever, this tamper applies uniform and level pressure to the ground espresso in a group handle. The result is a predictable and consistent extraction; a leap forward in simplifying traditional espresso preparation.

  • Constant dynamic pressure: 55 pounds (25 kilograms)per manufacturer spec’s.
  • Tamper diameter plates: (1) 51 mm, (1) 57.5 mm.

Notes:

  1. The Macap CPS Twist cannot tamp in rapid succession. For double (or triple) tamping in succession in the same portafilter, you need raise the handle to the top position before re-tamping.
  2. This tamper may arrive with a little excess grease around the mechanism or surrounding portion of the bag. You can use a dry cloth to to clean off any excess. This will not have any impact on the operation of the grinder.
  3. The tamping pressure is adjustable, but Macap does not provide instructions. In addition, there is no way to determine the exact pressure to adjust to.
  4. Concept Art bases can screw onto this tamper. It leaves a gap but it is a secure fit.

    4. I recently purchased a Macap CPS Dynamometric Tamper from you. I'm very happy with it. My shots are more consistent and it's a load off of my shoulder. I noticed that after a couple of weeks use (at home) it's slower returning to its pre-press position. That is, when the downward force reaches the set threshold, there's a "click" and it doesn't press as hard. After retracting it, it now takes 4 or 5 seconds for it to reset. When it was fresh out of the box, it was less than a second. Is that normal? Should I apply some machine oil to it? If so, how and where? I didn't see anything about this in the manufacturers manual.

You may be getting some ground coffee in the shaft area. WD40 or a little machine oil hopefully clears things up. Make sure to not get these products into the ground coffee as they are not health safe.

    20. How do I get into the top portion of the tamper to inspect the spring that keeps the lever upright? I'm assuming that I need to remove the screw (C0004CPS041) to get in there, correct? If so do you have any advise on doing this? The flat head screw is really tight and I feel like i'm going to strip the slot if I keep trying to loosen it.

It could be a bad spring or other failed component. The tamper would need to be taken apart and evaluated to determine which part has worn or failed. Part numbers can be determined using the diagram, and then searching for the part number on our web site.

Sorry, Macap does not recommend adjusting the pressure, and this is why there is no indication of the manual to adjust it. The pressure is certified by Illy Caffe as the unit was originally designed for them.
