Lelit William PL72 Doserless Stepped Espresso Coffee Grinder

The Lelit William PL72 pairs nicely with the Lelit Bianca, Lelit PL62 Mara, Lelit PL62T Mara, Lelit Mara X, and Lelit Elizabeth espresso machines!

Features:

Grinding adjustment
  • Stepped – Adjustment dial is located on the top in front of the hopper. The entire dial is numbered so you can remember your current grind setting easier. Turn clockwise for a finer grind and counterclockwise for a coarser grind.
  • Tamper stand – The adjustment dial also acts as a tamper stand. It can accommodate up to a 58 mm size tamper.
Grinding burrs:
  • Flat burrs – Large size at 64 mm. The larger the size, the more of a grinding surface, resulting in faster production.
Grinding operation:
  • Manual – For manual grinding, the button is located on the top to the left of the grinding adjustment dial. Press and hold for continuous grinding, and release to stop.
  • Electronic – For on-demand grinding, press the plate where the portafilter forks are attached. Push once for a single dose, push twice for a double dose. The on-demand grinding is time-based and can be adjusted using the buttons at the bottom of the plate.
Bean hopper:
  • Low profile – The total height of the grinder without the hopper is a little under 11.5″. The bean hopper adds another 3″ bringing the total height to approximately 14.5″.
  • Fingerguard – Prevents users from “accidentally” putting their fingers in the grinding burrs.
Portafilter fork:
  • Ease of use – There is an adjustable screw that your portafilter hooks onto. This allows for hands-free operation. Accommodates most portafilters. The clearance from the fork to the funnel is approximately 2.25″.
  • Coffee chute – The chute can be adjusted forward or backward depending on your portafilter.
Accessories included:
  • Grinds catch tray – The tray connects to the grinder with a magnet. Sticks out the sides which gives extra protection from spillage.
  • Power cord – This cord is completely removable from the back of the machine.
  • Instruction manual – Written in 7 languages: English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Romanian, Russian.

Espresso Grinder Warning

  • CLEANING WARNING: We recommend using grinder cleaning agents. We do not recommend any removal of the burrs or burr carrier for cleaning as re-assembly can cause damage.
  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso grinder which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. The lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso grinder can be damaged at the power switch, the capacitor, the motor, or the wiring.

  1. Changing grind settings: As with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered ‘on’ and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result occurs, this will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.
  2. Finding coffee grinds in a new grinder: We have confirmed that the manufacturer tests EVERY grinder with coffee beans before it leaves their facility, but they are not always able to get every trace of coffee out of the grinders after testing. As a result, you may find coffee beans or grinds inside your grinder, or there may be grinds in the packaging when you unwrap it.
  3. Static issues: There are static issues with all grinders, even the highest quality models. We firmly believe that the static comes from the coffee beans. If you are having static problems with your coffee grinder, trying using a different blend of beans.
  4. Replacing burrs: NEVER use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to wedge under the burrs for removal. This could badly damage your grinder.
  5. Electrical cord: Please note that the electrical cord is placed between the packaging (foam or cardboard) and the underside body of the grinder. During shipping, it is normal for a bend or insignificant blemish / slice to damage the cord.

This is my 3rd time deep cleaning the grinder since the purchase in Oct 2020. After cleaning, the grinder slowly stops taking into bean when I continue to dial into the fineness needed. It can only grinds at the very coarse level. I reassembled the grinder twice up to part#2400020 level. How do I troubleshoot this? Thank you!

Yes, the grinder needs to be tipped over as the hopper is attached with screws. Otherwise, one can just put in enough beans to grind and grind all the beans.

    8. How small of adjustments should I be able to make on a Lelit William? I feel like it’s really only half step between numbers? Is that normal. I adjusted it a few times without it running did this cause the issue? Can it be fixed?

A So now that I have been vexed by this little power house, I can tell you that achieving planar burrs is an art and not always possible, depending on your unit. The clamping pressure of the motor is held and adjust by 3 bolts. The stationary collar that you adjust your burr in is not able to be realigned to the motor driven burr. So, you will experience variation in grind size by virtue of nonplanar burrs. You can make these half step increments you allude to, but the nonplanar burrs is your limiting factor in achieving the right grind, not the "micrometrical" adjustment. Run the grinder when adjusting to finer grind. The manual suggests to run the grinder with any grind size adjustment. If you have rubbed your burrs together while running the motor, you have worn down your burrs. This is a wear item. Don't do this. If you use the button on top to pulse the motor, you can let the burr coast while decreasing grind setting. Do this with no beans in grinder and you will hear the faint rub of the burrs. Back off one half step. If this remains silent, then you now have your minimum grind size for the grinder. Its consistency is dependent on the planarity of the burrs. Also, with the moto having such high torque, the 3 adjusting bolts (internal) will give while under startup. This can take the factory setting out of adjustment over time. When you have this minimum grind size, pulse the motor several times even letting it sit and return to pulse to confirm the motor torque has not moved the burrs.

There is some grind retention on this grinder. It varies based on the coffee and amount.

We like this grinder because you can program the dose, but for single dosing, you can use the little button to start and stop the doing.

    12. Hello Jim. Can the metal plate portafilter holder removable or adjustable? I like to use a funnel or a dosing cup instead of placing a portafilter on the holder. Thanks

Sorry, not adjustable, but the two rods used for the portafilter holder and guide are removable.

First, unplug the unit from the electrical outlet. Remove the top cover, beans from the hopper, and the drip tray. Turn the unit on its side or upside down, making sure not to drop it.

Second, remove the 5 Philips screws on the bottom plate (4 larger and 1 smaller). On the front, there are 2 additional Philips head screws as well as T20 star key screws that need to be removed. The bottom panel can lift a little (still secure on back tabs) and the plastic front panel can slide off. This will give access to the nuts holding the portafilter holder rods.

Please note that 2 bolts in place of the rods will be needed to hold the front push panel that gets depressed. If not, the front metal push panel will fall off. The rods can not be reversed to the inside as there is not enough room for them.

Too many times, customers grind too fine to compensate for the lack of enough ground coffee in the basket. When ground way too fine, the chute can clog up. Very oily beans can compound this problem.

Try to clear the chute by sticking an opened paper click into the chute as far as possible. Make sure the grinder is unplugged from the electrical outlet.

Then plug in the grinder into the electrical outlet, and run the grinder without beans. While powered on and the motor running, take the settings coarser to a much larger number - almost one full rotation on the top dial. Pour in beans into the hopper. While the motor grinder is running, slowly turn the dial to smaller numbers. HOWEVER, you should not go back to the same spot number used previously as this will only clog the grinder again. Stop 3 numbers higher, test the grind on the espresso machine, Then make one adjustment notch at a time.

If the grinder remains to be clogged, it will need to be taken apart and cleaned internally. Just let us know.

A I have a brand New (from 1st-line) never before used Lelit William PL72" Grinder that will not grind. I have followed the instructions exactly as well as your email reply instructions about moving the grind setting very slowly to coarse, it still does not grind my beans (machine arrived with a setting on 3 fyi and it would not grind my beans.)
      Answered by the admin

In some cases, the grinder may be set too fine by Lelit staff. Please coarsen to setting 9, and then slowly make finer while the grinder is running and the bean hopper has espresso coffee beans.

    16. Hi dear 1st-line Team, this Lelit William PL72 gets my interest, but leves me with a doubt... Are the grind setting steps small enough to precisely dial in the grind in order to achieve the correct extraction time, or is it necessary to play also with the weight in the portafilter? Thank you!

The grind setting changes are very small internally. We only have experienced one blend of espresso out of many where we had an issue. However, we do not measure by weight, so our weight of the coffee may have had an impact.

Keep in mind, even with stepless, it can be difficult change a setting by a hairline.
