Lelit PLA482A 58.55 mm Pre-tamp Coffee Leveler

This Lelit 58mm Pre-tamp Coffee Leveler works on 58.55 mm opening on portafilters, like the Lelit PL162T Bianca. It helps even out the coffee grinds in your filter basket. The black portion of the leveler sits on the rim of the portafilter so it levels the coffee perfectly.  It also scrapes the excess coffee around the inside rim of the filter basket. (AKA: PL121PLUS)

Also known as a tamper leveler, leveling tool, distribution tool, or pre-tamp leveler.

Adjustable

The depth is adjustable by about 1/4″ by unscrewing the metal portion counterclockwise. There is a gasket that keeps the unit steady while turning. However, if you adjust too far (gasket goes beyond the black portion), the leveler will not turn properly.

Tamp by Volume

Most people use this as a pre tamp and then use a regular tamper to come in with full pressure. However, if you tamp by volume, then this tool may be all you need. The max depth this leveler can extend is approximately 1/2″.

Italian quality

This leveler is made in Italy. The black handle portion has the Lelit logo. A perfect complement to your Lelit espresso equipment.

Does the Lelit Leveler PLA 48 2A - fit the Rancilio Silvia's portafilter which is 58 mm. Lelit's Levelor is listed at 58.55 not 58. Also, I generally brew singles not doubles - will the Lelit Leveler work for doubles? Thanks.

Yes, it will fit. It is a more precise fit than something that is a standard 58.  The leveler will work for a single or double basket.

    6. OK. I’ll bite! Just received it yesterday. Very hefty and probably tightly engineered. And, that maybe contributes to the problem I’m having. 6’3” 220 lbs and pretty strong and I can’t budge this thing in either direction. It appeared to be fully extended upon in packaging. I’ve tried compressing the two halves and turning clockwise as shown in the video and one description. Of course, I’ve tried simply gripping both halves as tightly as possible and twisting in either direction without success. Is there a trick that I’m just not figuring out? Thanks...

A You need something like a rubber jar lid grip. You turn it clockwise to make is shorter and counter-clockwise to increase the depth.
A OK again! It finally released and is now turning clockwise and counterclockwise the way it should. As described, it has very tight tolerances and will not release and move from the position I’ve set unless I want it to do so. I am very pleased with the quality of leveling that this device enables. I will another one for our other home double boiler machine out in the desert. The Lelit Bianca continues to be very impressive. I’ve been pressure profiling with another much more expensive machine for three years and the Lelit Bianca that we have now had for one year allows profiling flexibility beyond our other machine or any other profiling capable machine that I’ve worked with. Many thanks for the continuing great service from 1st-line...
    8. How does the depth stay locked? What keeps it from shifting with use?

A friction. it takes some effort to adjust and once set, it doesn't move. works great btw, and makes a tamper totally optional.
A Its very firm to make adjustments...once it's set, it hasn't lost its position
A I purchased this with my Bianca and it has been fantastic. You have to press with the palm of your hand onto the chrome part and rotate the black part to adjust the depth. The threads are very fine and the adjustment is therefore very precise. You want the spokes to dig a bit into the puck to distribute the coffee and break up the clumps but do not want it to be so deep that it “pretamps’ your puck. There is absolutely no risk of the spoke portion rotating as you are using it - the threads are stiff enough to prevent that. Another benefit is the automatic leveling that occurs. The black part rests on the rim of your basket and as you rotate clockwise 3-4 times, the distributed puck surface becomes all ready to tamp level. It has improved channeling problems for me because the fluid comes out evenly on both sides of the PF now. You will know if it is set too deep if coffee collects around the edge when you pull it off. I would not submerge this in water To clean but rather surface clean the spokes to get the oils off. The build quality far exceeds the price in my opinion as a user and not a seller.
A It takes a great deal of strength to screw the base in and out. The friction in the screw mechanism is more than enough to make it stay locked in place. I've been using it for a year and had absolutely no issues with the depth changing on its own.
A Depth is adjusted simply by turning/twisting the lower part of the leveler. There is no lock, but changing the depth requires very firm pressure/force. Everyday use does not change the depth at all - FAR more force than that is needed to adjust depth. Depth doesn't change unless you deliberately change it. We love this leveler - it was a game changer. Our tamper is only 58mm but the Lelit portafilter basket is 58.55mm in diameter Believe it or not having that extra .55mm makes a huge difference along the edges. The leveler seals up the edges of the puck preventing the seepage along the edges we occasionally experienced during extraction when we were leveling with our fingers before tamping.

A I bought the 57mm version and it's totally adjustable. You just rotate the bottom counter clockwise (as you are looking at the shiny bottom part) to make it extend. The top part basically screws off completely if you make enough rotations, but you can safely extend it about 6mm. Hence the depth inside the portafilter basket can change from a minimum of 8mm to a maximum of 14mm from what I have measured. I use it at the minimum setting for about 16 grams of coffee for a double shot and it works like a charm. It looks to me as though the Lelit levelers are rebranded Motta 83xx series levelers which are also advertised as adjustable.
