Lelit PL62S Mara HX Espresso Machine

A huge legend in a small body. The Lelit PL62S Mara is placed at the prestigious end of many home espresso machines. It combines the best technology ever – the legendary E61 grouphead inside an incredibly compact, full stainless steel body. The result: a marvelous, appealing and super compact espresso machine enabling to apply barista’s golden rules and extract the most tasty espressos and cappuccinos you can dream of.

Heat exchange system

  • Copper, insulation – The boiler is copper which retains heat better than stainless steel. Typically copper boilers are more susceptible to limescale when you compare them to stainless steel boilers. Therefore, we highly recommend using a water softener. The manufacturer wraps the boiler with insulation for maximum heat retention. Internal pipes are also in copper.
  • Pull a shot & steam milk at the same time – Steam is always readily available. Hence, there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
  • Thermo-siphon double cycle system – Keeps the brew group and the boiler always hot, at the right temperature.
  • Polymer tubing connection – From the boiler to steam and hot water valves: Alimentary. Able to withstand high pressure and high temperatures up to 620 °F. Facilitates easier repairs. Most importantly, is limescale resistant.
  • Manual resettable safety thermostat – Located on top of the boiler.

E-61 grouphead

  • Constantly heated – Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. As a result, the grouphead temperature is constant and stable when compared to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element.
  • Pre-infusion – The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds. Pulling the lever halfway up will open the valve to allow water into the grouphead without activating the pump. Please note that true pre-infusion requires a direct water connection whereby the water pressure from the water line creates the true pre-infusion.

Vibratory pump

  • Efficient – 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. You only need 9 bars to extract perfect espresso, and wattage has no correlation to longevity.
  • Cost-effective – Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will cost less than a rotary vane pump.

Tank / reservoir system

  • Particle filter – Protects the machine from any unseen particles entering the boiler. You can remove this filter if you are installing an inline water softener.
  • Auto-shut off – Prevents burning out the heating element. There is a two-stage shutoff. There is a magnetic float in the water tank that detects when the water is low. The other is the spring-activated plate underneath the water tank that detects when the tank is removed.

Separate steam / hot water wands

  • Multi-directional – Allows for more movement and flexibility. The wands connect to the valves at an angle to the side for even more flexibility. As a result, there is less risk of burning oneself from the exposed grouphead.
  • No burn – Reduces the risk of burning your fingers. Please note the tip and valve connection are still hot.
  • 2-hole steam tip – Allows for a slow gradual build-up of microfoam.
  • Rotational knobs – Allows for easier control of the intensity.

Dual pressure gauge

  • Steam (boiler) pressure gauge – Top half. Measures from 0 to 4 bar. The optimal pressure is between 0.8 and 1.1.
  • Brew (pump) pressure gauge – Bottom half. Measures from 0 to 16 bar. The optimal pressure is between 8 and 10.

Indicator lights & tone

  • Heating light – Located on the right side. Indicates when the heating element is active.
  • Power indicator light – Located on the left side. This will indicate when the machine is on.
  • Low water – When the water in the tank is low, you will hear a constant beep.

Construction

  • Steel body – With a satin finish.
  • Extremely low feet – This creates a very low profile to fit under most kitchen cabinets.
  • Power plug – Completely detaches from the espresso machine and can fit into the drip tray for long-term storage.

Notes
  • Comparison to the PL62 version:
    • The PL62S has a plastic tamper. The PL62 has an upgraded tamper.
    • The PL62S has a 2 spout portafilter. The PL62 has a 1 spout portafilter and a 2 spout portafilter.
    • The PL62S has plastic steam / hot water knobs. The PL62 has upgraded knobs similar to the PL62T.
  • Direct water connection: The Lelit PL62T Mara is currently NOT available with a direct water connection. It can only operate with a water tank / reservoir.
  • Low water alarm: The beep of the low water alarm starts slow for about 20 seconds. In this time there is power to the heating element. After the 20 seconds the heating element is no longer powered and the beep increases the frequency.

I have a Lelit Mara that lets out three consecutive beeps when the pressure stat clicks off on the first heat up after the machine is powered on via the main switch. Is this behaviour normal? Additionally are there any other reasons this machine would beep not related to the reservoir reed switch or microswitch? Thank you very much.

This is not normal. It can be a bad wiring, a bad REED switch, reservoir microswitch, or brain unit. Difficult to determine without evaluating the machine.

    2. Hello, I have a Mara PL62S that we purchased from you all a few years ago. I love the machine but are there any modifications or upgrades that you recommend and sell? Can I switch out the water tank reservoir for one from the newer Mara X that is clear and easier to clean? Do you recommend adding a manometer to the E61 grouphead? Are there better feet to add to this machine? It vibrates a lot also by the drip tray and the water tank lid. Any tips on making it more quiet? Thanks for your help!

Sorry, there are no upgrades that we offer except the brew pressure gauge kit by Lelit and their flow control kit. Sorry, there are no better feet. The Mara X water reservoir system can not be changed. As far as the vibating, please check the pump and make sure it is not hitting any metal inside. Otherwise, you may need to test different removable components to see where the noises are coming from.

    4. Hello! I have a problem with my PL62S. I have been using it for about 4 years now and recently I hear water heater boiling and a lot of water discharge in the tub. Also sometimes the pressure when I make a shot of espresso is 8-8.5. But a lot of times the pressure i4-4.5 and sometimes fluctuate between 6-8. Do I need a new pump? Thanks!

It can be the OPV, safety valve, bleeder valve, boiler solenoid valve, and pump is allowing back-flow of steam pressure coming from the boiler or heat exchange pipe. It is probably best for a local professional to look for the potential combination of parts that have failed - usually fail from corrosion from the water.

I was running a backflush routine today on my Lelit Mara PL62S (purchased from you in 2016 and going strong until today) and during the process I heard a mechanical/electronical click and the machine shut off. I tried turning back on and it will not power back on. The power to machine is good. What could have tripped and is there a way to reset or replace a part to fix the issue?

    10. Hello 1st-Line - I have a Lelit Mara PL62T espresso machine I purchased in 2016. Couple of questions: 1) I see that most of my coffee roasters recommend a temperature of 200 degrees to brew espresso. But the machine seems to start at 230, and when I run the water, the lowest it will ever drop is to 219. Any thoughts on that? 2). Does the machine need to be descaled at all? I’ve heard some people say yes, others no. What’s your opinion. 3). Over the past year, water drips out of the front, the MC377 part and the portafilter. I’ve varied the amount of coffee that goes in there, and it always drips. Is there a fix for that other than a small cup in front to catch the water :). Thanks you so much.

This is not a dual boiler machine, so the programmed temp is higher like other HX machines.  When water enters the boiler and HX pipe, it is normal for the colder water to lower the temperature.

The machine should be evaluated to see if it needs a descaling.

As for leaking, you may need a new portafilter gasket, or a new basket.

    12. I purchased my Lelit Mara PL62S in October 2018, about 3 1/4 years ago. Occasionally, when pulling a shot, the brewing pressure will drop to around 0 bars for 1-2 seconds. It then immediately returns to the previous pressure, which is usually 9.5 bars. This began happening sometime in the past year and it is a relatively rare occurrence. Otherwise, the machine is working fine. Is this normal behavior or something that I should be concerned about? Either way, I would like to know what is causing it to occur.

This can be a clogged water softener (take off and test), or an electrical problem, or a grind fineness problem (test with blind filter and if it does not happen, then probably a grind problem)

A The problem is not due to a clogged water softener. Is the electrical option an issue with the machine or our household circuit? Based on my experience, I think it is caused by grinding fineness, over-tamping and/or over-filling the portafilter. Most likely the latter two options. . . It does not happen often. Is it something that can damage the machine or is the symptom the machine protecting itself from potential harm?

    18. I am looking for assistance with the Lelit P62s. I have had it for almost a year and due to my inexperience with this type of machine, I am unable to get good results when pulling shots. I also have the Lelit William Grinder. Are there guidelines or pointers you can provide to get me on the right track. I have grown frustrated over time and hate using the machine. If possible can you provide the following: ~Ideal PID Temp? ~How long to flush water before pulling a shot? ~Should the shot be pulled immediately after flush or wait a period of time? ~Grams of coffee for single and double basket? ~Starting point on William Grinder? I know all coffee is different dependent on grind and roast, but I just need some help! I've invested a lot so far, and would like to get full use out of this investment. Today I also ordered the Lelit leveler from your company, to see if it helps.

Sorry, it does take time to learn. However, it should happen in 3-4 months.

~Ideal PID Temp? This really depends upon your espresso blend.

      a) Ideally, the gauge for steam pressure should be between 0.9 and 1.2

~How long to flush water before pulling a shot?

      a) Until the steam dissipates form the grouphead.

~Should the shot be pulled immediately after flush or wait a period of time?

      a) Immediately.

~Grams of coffee for single and double basket?

      a) Always use the double and fill basket to rim. Then tamp with leveler only. Then only thing to change is the grind fineness.

      ~Starting point on William Grinder?

    20. I recently bought one of these from you. I am having an issue with GFI tripping and I have seen online that it is happening with other customers as well. 22. I bought the machine on Dec. 15 2018 (order 29160) and had no troubles at all. I have followed periodic maintenance instructions (monthly cleaning), always kept the reservoir full and replaced the filter. Since a week ago, the machine has started making a loud noise. It is dispensing water and steam but it makes a rattling loud noise. I have to turn it off for it to stop after 10 -15 seconds. I have taken a video and I would be happy to send it to an address. I understand this may not be in warranty, but it seems a little too early to have issues, as I was planning to use this machine for the next 20 years!

It looks like your top gauge is going past 1.5 where the safety valve opens up and make this noise. This is caused by limescale, which means your water is too hard.

You can try to descale the machine yourself. After descaling, the pressurestat will need to be replaced or if there is a PID, it will need to be cleaned.

A repair company can be searched for in our database and then contacted to see if they are willing to work on your machine. Or, the machine can be sent in for repair to us. Unfortunately, we can not provide an estimate until the machine is evaluated.

We test over 95% of prosumer machines with water only before packaging for shipping. In many cases, a 'new' faint smell can sometimes be noticed - it may seem like plastic, but it is usually the metal. The most important thing is there are no leaks inside or below the machine as which point the machine needs to be unplugged from the electrical outlet and contacting us for further steps.

We do bench test every Lelit Mara espresso machine with water only immediately prior to shipping. Upon warm, only a few droplets may exit the grouphead or manual valve ont he botton.

The lever needs to be in the completely down position when warming up. If the lever is completely in the down position, and it still leaks:

      a) from the grouphead, the upper gasket inside the grouphead may have dislodged or damaged from freezing water, or
      b) from the manual valve on the bottom of the grouphead, the two lower gaskets may have dislodged or damaged from freezing water.

It can also be one of the cams sticking inside the bottom or top, or it can be the cam for the lever is out of alignment.

It is really difficult to state which problem it could without taking the grouphead apart in a cold state.

    32. . There seems to be a problem with one of the internal sensors on the machine. The issue is that the pump does not turn off like it is supposed to. The pump will keep running for over an hour until the unit seems to overheat, and only then does the pump turn off. Once the pump turns off, no water comes out of the group head, only some steam. . When I set up the machine and flushed the hot water wand, the water that came out was very brown. After flushing over a liter of water, it cleared up and now seems normal. However, I just wanted to make sure that this was expected behavior on a new machine.

Thanks for the post. As discussed over the phone, the problem can be purified water, such as distilled or reverse osmosis. The other problems can be a wire disconnected in shipping on the refill valve for the boiler or some water from our bench testing dried in one of the pin hole gicleurs in the solenoid valves.

If purified water is being used, add a pinch of salt to the water.

If still overfilling, power down and unplug the machine from the wall outlet. Remove the top cover and screws. Check the wires on the black rectangular boxes, known as solenoid valves and make sure there are no loose wires.

Lastly, if still overfilling, remove any filter from the longer intake hose. Make sure it has a V cut. Remove the water from the reservoir and add 4 about 4 cups of white vinegar and run the vinegar through the grouphead. Power off machine immediately and allow to sit for one hour. Repeat. Remove the reservoir, drain the white vinegar, rinse and refill with fresh water. If the overfill persists, proceed with the white vinegar process for 24-48 hours. This is to clear any blockage that may occur in the refill valve.

If the overfilling continues, the espresso machine will probably need to be evaluated for a loose wire at the brain unit or other part of the machine..

Sorry, the PID can not be retrofitted as there are many components to be changed. We have a great bottomless/naked portafilter for the Lelit Mara espresso machine.

A The Lelit Mara has changed my life, had it for 10 months now and I could not be happier. I drink two cappuccinos and one espresso in the morning, better than any bar I have tried, also bars in Italy, and light years better than a Starbucks. I totally recommend this jewel. And btw I did not have any problem of any kind, I clean it once a month which takes 15 min and just follow instructions.
    36. So our company got the PL62S a few months ago and it has not been used until recently, however the steam wand is not working. Considering the machine has only been turned on a few times and no milk has been steamed with the wand there is no chance it is caused from build-up or is getting clogged. Still, though, when we turn the handle nothing happens, no steam or water, not even a little. Whenever the left knob is turned it just comes unscrewed and falls off. When we put the handle back on the machine the cap on the end of the handle popped off and so did all the metal pieces in side of the handle. We were able to put it back together, however, still no steam.

      Hi,

One of the pieces of the knob is a c-clip (9400001).  Is that piece bent at all?  It should be flat.

    38. "Stella" was a brand-new machine purchased from you last October. This morning the steam wand worked fine. When I tried to steam milk this afternoon there was no steam. ZipZeroNadda, not even a spurt nor a drip. (Frankly, I cannot recall if water came out prior to attempting to steam but I had the steam wand in the pitcher when I noticed the problem. I guess that the exact sequence of events will remain a mystery. . .) The steam and pressure gauge reads normally. The right-hand LED heating element lights up. Water comes out of the hot water nozzle and the coffee distribution unit. The two tiny holes at the end of the steam wand are not plugged. When I remove the tip of the steam wand neither steam nor water comes out. We use water that is naturally soft and that is also filtered underneath the sink. (It comes from the local food co-op.) There has always been a water softener filter attached. We consider Stella to be a member of our family and we are bereft that she is not feeling well. We will be anxiously awaiting your reply. . .

Sorry to hear about this issue. This is a first on the Mara without the steam tip being clogged.

Please always review the diagram. The instructions below are for the steam valve. On the hot water valve, the issues below can happen as well as a clog of the hot water wand pipe on the bottom of the boiler.

On page 6, there is the diagram of the wand. There is a small chance the c-clip underneath the knob cap broke. In this case, turning the knob can not turn the stem to open the knob. If it broke, email us a picture and we will send out free of charge for machines under warranty.

In a very rare case, the end closing gasket may have dislodged off the stem and into the valve. This happens when the knobs are turned to tight on non-compression steam and hot water valves. This gasket can be re-inserted inside out after the stem is removed on a COLD espresso machine unplugged from the outlet. The steam knob cover, c-clip and washers need to be removed before the knob can be backed out. Then the stem needs to be backed out from the valve.

Lastly, and very unlikely, the no-burn tubing inside the wand could be clogged. On a COLD espresso machine unplugged from the electrical outlet, the nut attaching the wand to the valve can be removed. Be careful as the spring can go flying. Blow some air through the tube from one side to see if it is clear. Be careful that the wand is not hot, or everyone will call you HOT LIPS!

Answered by the admin The PL62S has a pressurstat whiich you can adjust the steam pressure which is proportional to the boiler temperature, which also affects the grouphead temperature. The PL62S-T was a custom made machine for 1st-line that does not have the pressurstat. It has the PID boiler sensor in the boiler like the PID model Mara PL62T, BUT it does not have the PID display and it does not have the same motherboard that allows the user to change the temperature. Hence, the temperature is set by Lelit at a temperature that works with many different espresso beans. Hence, the PL62S-T is a hybrid between the The PL62S and the PL62T.

In most cases, one needs to find the spot where the lever on the side does not engage the switch, but does open the valve to allow water out. But first, you need to make sure your heat exchanger has some water in it by running water through the grouphead without coffee until a flow without steam occurs. Within 30 seconds of completing, lift the lever to preinfuse.

If you need to move the switch, it is best to unpug the machine and allow to fully cool. All the screws on the top panel and respective body screws on AND holding the bottom panel need to be removed. The little nut holding the switch on the outside needs to be loosened, and the nut on the inside (more difficult to access) needs to be tightened against the body panel. Usually 1-2 full nut rotations is satisfactory.

Lastly, as most do not know... vibration pumps have built in preinfusion as it takes between 7-9 seconds to get to full pump pressure. This is a preinfusion in it itself.

    44. I purchased my Lelit PL62S Mara at 1st Line last December. It ran fine until about two months ago. It then started venting steam often and started to trip the GFI outlet in my kitchen which it hadn't done before. I descaled and cleaned the E61 shower screen and group head but no improvement. I have removed the top cover and turned on the power from a non GFI outlet. The steam is very strong and is venting through the brass outlet valve quite strongly. I viewed the 1st Line video > https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=145&v=eef8GdJy1ZE and the inside of my machine does not reveal a steam adjustment screw head as seen in the video. Please advise............. Thank you, Tony

Thank you for your inquiry. The problem is not adjusting the steam. The problem is limescale build up that is not allowing the proper temperature to be measured. Please run a descaler through the machine following these instructions. After this descaling and allowing the machine unplugged from the electrical outlet to get to a completely cold state, you will need to remove this part from the top of the boiler. BE CAREFUL TO NOT TWIST THE WIRE IN ANY WAY AS IT WILL DAMAGE!!!! Once removed, wire brush clean the probe.

Reassemble the machine and test. Great if it works! Bad thing is that you need to treat the water with an in-tank water softener to minimize the limescale build up.

There are many touch points where an espresso machine can leak. The top cover will need to be removed and determined where the leak is occurring. Please note most leaks occur because of limescale or oxidation inside the machine.

If it is the vacuum/bleeder valve part #9700015 is leaking, it can be replaced. Please review the diagram. However, since limescale usually affects this part first on this machine, the machine should be descaled and the water needs to be treated better with a Lelit water softener.

If the boiler safety valve is triggering steam, it will need to be replaced and the machine descaled and the pressurstat replaced. The water needs to be treated as well.

If other parts are leaking, they will need to be replaced searching our web site for the part numbers in our diagrams.

It is best to short backflush without detergent every day. Short backflush with detergent every 50 espresso extractions. Remove the dispersion screen every 6-12 months for repalcement. We do not recommend constant removal for cleaning as removal can damage the screen's housing.

    50. Hi, I have a new problem with the our Lelit Mara 62S. As the boiler heats up, the boiler fill connection/one-way valve allows steam and some water to flow back out of the boiler and dump to the reservoir. This dumping back to reservoir continues for as long as the machine is at temperature, overheating the water in the reservoir, so the machine is not usable for making coffee. I'm thinking the fill connection valve assembly is supposed to be a one-way check valve allowing flow into the boiler but not back out. Do you have a replacement part for that fill connection/one-way valve assembly? Below asked on March 4, 2018 Hi, Follow-up to my question posted on 3/4/2018 regarding the water/steam leaking back to the reservoir. I found this youtube video from another Lelit PL62S owner that illustrates exactly the same symptoms/problem I am having. "Lelit PL 62 boiler problem" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoDdxCnrvnE

Please review the diagrams for the Lelit Mara PL62S espresso machine.

Please note that in most espresso heat exchanger espresso machines, the water enters the bottom of the boiler.  The reason is that if cold water lands on top of the heating element, it most likely will damage the heating element. Therefore, the valve that is leaking, is not a one way check valve.

The part in question is the boiler safety valve. This part leaks for mostly one of two reasons:

      a) limescale build up is holding the valve open, or
      b) The pressurstat has limescale (from calcium or magnesium in the water) or oxidation (too pure corrosive water) and is constantly sending electricity to the heating element which in turn overheats the boiler and the safety valve opens so the boiler does not explode.

If you look at the video closely, there is a green or bluish discoloration on the top of the boiler. The video shows the machine has limescale or oxidation. This effect can be seen on many heat exchanger and double boiler espresso machines.

The machine can be sent in for repair. If you wish to repair yourself, you will need to descale the machine and descale the safety valve.

Although the safety valve is usually not compromised, the pressurestat (steam pressure controller) is usually compromised and has needed replacement in 90% of cases of limescale build up.

We recommend descaling the machine before the pressurstat replacement to avoid the contaminants from ruining the new pressurstat.

Lastly, the water problem needs to be resolved. We strongly recommend the Lelit water softener. It needs to be recharged 1-4x/month depending upon water hardness and replaced once per year.

      Questions:

      1. Are there any additional components I should replace during this service?

Grouphead gasket part# F15 and dispersion screen part# F277 should be replaced.

      2. How do I order the correct replacement silicon tubing?

      No need to replace this.

      3. Question: Should I continue to use the BILT bags along with the Lelit softener filters?

      Yes.

A I tried to remove the existing tubing from the overpressure valve. It would not come off with reasonable force. I'm afraid it will rip or be damaged if I apply additional force. That is why I would like to have some replacement tube to complete the work if required. If you could tell me the tube type (PTFE, silicone,.etc.)and internal diameter (4mm ID, 6mm ID?) required I could source it myself. I will order the gasket and dispersion screen as well.

It is only held by friction and usually will slide off with a good tug. Unfortunately, manufacturers normally do not give size specifications on their parts because they do not ant the competition to copy.

If it breaks, its best to take the current silicon hose to your local hardware store as it will be significantly cheaper than from Italy.

A Received the parts today, thanks! I replaced the overpressure valve and the pressure stat. The old overpressure valve had failed, it was stuck in the open position. (I'm soaking it in vinegar.) Question: What would be a good starting pressure to set on the manometer using the pressure stat adjustment screw?
      Answered by the admin

Set to have the minimum at 0.9 bar pressure for better espresso, or set to 1.3 bar maximum to optimize the steam capacity for lattes. Otherwise somewhere in between for doing both.
