Lelit PL60PLUST Diana PID Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Wow!!!! What can we say? We have been using this machine for our videos as well as in our showroom for the first 6 months in 2015. The results in the cup are just plain and simple AMAZING!

Back in 2015, Lelit in Italy wanted to respond to the double boiler machines entering the industry – those popular espresso machines designed in Australia, but produced in China with a plastic chassis and this thin metal. Enter the Lelit Diana – made in Italy with a stainless steel body, brass coffee boiler for superior heat stability and a stainless steel steam boiler that knocks out a punch of consistent steam power!

The Lelit Diana double boiler espresso machine dual vibration pumps to support each boiler independently in such a compact beautiful casing!

The two boilers allow to you make espresso and steam milk simultaneously. On other single vibratory pump espresso machines, there is a flaw if the pump has to refill the steam boiler while extracting the espresso. In this scenario, the pressure to the ground coffee in the filter holder can receive less pressure. This can ruin the espresso. The Lelit Diana solves this issue with 2 independent pumps – one for the coffee boiler and one for the steam boiler.

Another flaw corrected over other machines is the replacement of the steam thermoblock with a full stainless steel boiler. These thermoblocks, usually made of aluminum or brass, have a very difficult time producing good steam to produce that velvety froth or producing good powered steam. In the Lelit Diana, there is a PID controlled, large, stainless steel steam boiler which is completely dedicated for producing powerful steam. There is also circuitry to refill the steam boiler with water from the reservoir.

The extreme ease of use of this espresso machine and the superior quality make Diana the first choice for families with discerning tastes and who love to enjoy their creamy lattes and silky cappuccinos. It is certainly one of our favorites!

Features:

  • Polymer tubing connecting both boilers to respective steam / hot water valves: Alimentary. Able to withstand high pressure and temperatures (up to 620 °F). Easy for repairs and most importantly, are limescale free. All drain and over-pressure water hoses are made of long lasting silicone.
  • Stainless steel body: Polished to a mirror finish (exterior only).
  • Dual pressure gauge: Top half measures steam boiler pressure (0 – 4 bar) with normal operating range of 0.8 to 1.3 bar. Bottom half measures brew pump pressure (0 – 16 bar) and should only be read when extracting espresso with a desired range of 8-10 bar. Your grind fineness, amount of ground coffee, and tamping pressure will need to be adjusted to get to the desired brew pressure.
  • Separate indicator lights: for coffee, hot water, steam, and low water.
  • Multi-directional steam wand: Single hole tip and a special porthole to in the drip tray grate to discharge the steam or condensate into the drip tray.
  • Fixed position hot water wand: Never remove more than 4 ounces of water at a time so the pump can refill the boiler without damage – this is our standard recommendation on all prosumer machines sold, including ones we do not carry.
  • Professional grade portafilter: Double spout, 58 mm diameter. Lelit logo imprinted on the filter head.
  • PID temperature programming: Allows user to change boiler temperature through the use of the digital display/control panel on the front panel of the machine. The display reads out the current temperature of the coffee boiler and sequentially the steam boiler.
  • Extremely low feet: Creates a very low profile.
  • Power cord: Completely removable from machine.
  • Removable water tank / reservoir: Located through top of machine.
  • Removable drip tray and grill: Separate attachment for drip tray grill for smaller cups. Two separate drip trays – 1 for the coffee side, 1 for the hot water side.
  • Solid brass coffee boiler: Attached to a sold brass grouphead to increase thermal stability
  • Powerful steam boiler: For great steaming performance
  • Accessories included: Double spout portafilter, 2-cup filter basket, plastic tamper, plastic scoop, water softener (already attached to in tank line), drip tray grill height extender (already attached to drip tray), power cord, and instructional manual.

  1. Warm up time: The machine label states 3 minutes but this is incorrect. For 110 volts it is about 20-30 minutes for a proper warm up with the portafilter in the grouphead
  2. Per Lelit: The coffee boiler is assembled in two parts, the lower part is made of brass, but a chrome surface processing (Stecrhome type- NSF regulation conformity) is performed, to reduce the lead migration. The upper part of the boiler is made of CW510L alloy, having the 0,2% max. of lead, value within the limits approved according to the NSF regulations.

Prior to purchase, please review the diagram for the Diana on our web site, search for the part number, and finally, match the part in your machine to the picture on our web site. Sorry, we are unable to answer directly as manufacturers have changed part without notification and most times not updating the diagrams. hence, the aforementioned process needs to occur.

    10. I'm having trouble unscrewing the group head screw. I want to do a good cleaning around the group head and for some reason in my group head screw is too tight for me to unscrew and I have unfortunately started stripping the head. I have the correct size Allen key but it is not working. I'm back flushing in the meantime and using a cleaning brush but I really want to pull it down to do a proper cleaning. Any advice on how to get the screw out and then get a replacement screw?

The only way to remove the screw is by using pliers to remove the dispersion screen and ripping it out. Then, the screw will loosen out more easily. if this does not work, then a professional needs to evaluate the situation.

    12. Okay. I have wire brushed the sensor and screwed it back in. As I watched the machine heat up, I saw that there's a bit more water coming from the MC 073 fitting than I thought. It looks like a compression fitting. How do I tighten it? A little bit of water coming from the relief valve as it comes up to pressure, but i guess that's what the collar around it is for.

If leaking from the threaded side, then plumbers tape can be used. If from the other side, it may be the hose or gasket inside this fitting (plumbers tape can not correct).

    14. Thanks for the quick response. The sensor is screwed in very tightly. I guess I need to use a socket ( can you tell me what size?) after disconnecting the red wires where they meet the white ones coming from the PID.

    16. I have a Diana, Serial 38800, Lot 38793, Prod. 02/2016. Yesterday I noticed that water was dripping from the front of the machine and collecting in front of the drip tray. 2 or 3 tablespoons. The machine had been operating normally. Leaving the machine on, I took off the top to look for an obvious leak. All I could see was a slight bubbling at the connection of MC073 and the silicone tube. About 5 minutes later the pressure release blew. Can you please give me an idea of what's going on? Does the steam boiler need descaling? Replacement? I'm not going to use the machine until I know what the problem is. I know that the Diana has been discontinued, but until now it has worked flawlessly, and I hate the thought of replacing a six-year-old machine.

It is probably overheating and the PID sensor on the steam boiler needs a wire brush cleaning. It usually has a double red wire that should never be twisted, turned or bent.

    18. I've had my Lelit Diana since fall of 2015, and this past weekend the pump seems to have died out. The machine turns on and the boilers heat up, but when I turn on the water or coffee switch I get no water flow through the machine. There is a soft sound that doest happen when turning on the water, but not the standard loud vibration sound you get from a vibratory pump. Because of this I tried a few trouble shooting steps such as forcing water through the system with a hand pump/syringe in order to rule out any air pockets in the pump (a common issue I found when browsing the internet). Any suggestions for trouble shooting or pump replacement would be appreciated. Thanks!

    20. Hi there, I went out of town for a few weeks so I didn't want to leave water sitting in the machine. I drained the water tank and left it out of the machine. When I returned and put water back in the tank the fill water indicator keeps beeping and going off. The switch feels fine and clicks on the bottom right side of the tank column. I am no longer hearing the float go in the tank when I turn the tank upside down and right side up like I used to. I don't know if this is also a magnetic float because when I tape the switch down it's OK for a minute but will only work when I turn the tank with the float side towards the switch. Do you think I need a new water tank because the float is not operating?

    22. We've had the Diana for 3 years. Some time ago (order of months) the quality of espresso started to degrade, and we could no longer reach 8-12 psi. We have been doing all the recommended maintenance - water softener, etc. This issue has now started to worsen faster. We've tried making our grind finer. The extraction pressure goes a bit (maybe to 8 psi if we're lucky), but it has tripped the circuit breaker on numerous occasions. We are now seeing condensation in the pressure sensor, and occasionally drips of water come out of it. The quality of espresso continues to be poor as we can't reach extraction pressure. We're afraid to use it as it seems on the edge of failure.

    24. I have a Lelit Diana espresso machine that our purchase from First Line, and I noticed the silicone or plastic tubes that go into the water tank are showing black spots which I believe are mold. I would like to replace both of these tubes. I do not see the parts listed on the parts diagrams but basically it's both of the tubes one that goes to the water filter and the other that must be some kind of water return from the machine back into the tank. So my questions are, will this be easy for me to replace on my own at home and do you have the tubing or know where I could purchase it?

We recommend that customers use the diagrams for the Diana and search by part number for availability and pricing. If they are not on our web site, then we do not have them. For hoses, we usualyl suggest matching them up to a local hardware or kitchen supply store. They are made of silicone and are much cheaper when purchased locally.

    32. Experiencing a problem with a machine that is about five years old. The steam boiler won't fill and the fill controller starts beeping after 5 minutes. (I checked the steam boiler for mineral build up - all clear there.) Upon start-up when the boiler typically fills the voltage across the two wires to the pump reads 12-14V. The voltage from the blue wire reads 120V to ground. So thinking there is a problem with the steam boiler fill controller, maybe a bad relay. Looking for a tech's opinion here before ordering a new fill controller. Thank you in advance.

    38. A decade ago I purchased the single-boiler Lelit espresso machine from 1st Line. It was terrific except for the steam wand, which didn't make froth well. I did some research and then bought "Elektra Steam Tip Nozzle - Chrome - 01400021 B06 16 ", also from 1st line. It worked like a charm! Recently, I upgraded to the Lelit double-boiler Diana. The steam wand worked well the first few times, but then its performance slowly degraded, similar to last machine. I was very careful to clean after each use - releasing small bit of steam and cleaning with damp cloth. Is there another tip you would recommend for the Diana machine which will improve froth making? Recently I pulled out my old Lelit since it is now our "travel" espresso machine, and was reminded how much better the upgraded tip improved the steaming process.

      Yes, you can.

A I personally use Urnex Cafiza, but yes, you should back flush your machine I think they say once per month, or after 50 or 60 shots. At the same time, you'll want to recharge the softener, assuming you have one in your machine. The softener should be replaced every year.
A Yes, I have been using Ascaso for backflushing. Here is a video: https f://www.1st-line.com/technical-support/general-maintenance/backflushing-instructions/ . I do this every 3 weeks or so (~50 shots), and recharge my water softener at the same time. Here is info on water softener recharge: https://www.1st-line.com/technical-support/general-maintenance/water-softener-recharge-reservoir/

    44. Hi, the water coming from my Lelit Diana has a funky odor and a stale taste. I bought from you about 5-6 years ago so it’s on the older side. I clean it regularly with a blind etc. I also have a water softener filter that I recharge regularly and change every year. I assuming you’ve come across this before. Wondering what’s the next steps? Special cleaning? Part replacement? Thanks so much! Tim

This can be difficult to remove. If the odor is from the grouphead, Please remove any filters or water softeners from the intake tube in the reservoir then run white vinegar through the grouphead. Then rinse with water.

If it is from the hot water spigot or steam wand, this is more difficult and the machine may need to be shipped in for service.

    46. Hello, I purchased my Diana in March of 2018. I sent the machine into 1st-Line in December of 2018 and found the steam boiler needed descaled. It turns out, the water line to my refrigerator is not softened. I bring this up because at the time, the steam boiler would not heat up at all and my brew boiler would go up as high as 232 degrees F. Fast forward to more recently (June/July of 2019) and I seem to be having an issue with the brew boiler once again going up to 226 - 232 degrees. I've tried resetting the PID per the manual I downloaded from the 1st-Line site. I believe the brew boiler, after pulling a shot and losing temp, should then go back up to about 210 - 212 degrees before coming back down and settling around the 203 degree mark. Mine, however, goes all the way up to 226 - 232 before coming back down slowly to 203. I called 1st-Line and was asked to descale the brew boiler to see if that fixes the issue. That didn't seem to help anything. Since my Diana was professionally descaled by 1st-Line back in December, I've been sourcing my water directly from the kitchen tap, which I know is softened and have tested the softness on multiple occasions. Is there anything else I can try on my own? Does it sound like an issue with the boiler or possibly the PID? Thanks! Mark

Please follow the instructions for a reset as someone may have changed the parameters. Otherwise, it may need to come in for evaluation.

    48. When I turn on my Diana, when the machine has come to operating temperature and I hit the steam switch, the steam vents mostly into the drip tray, not through the wand. If I let the steam vent for 10 seconds, close the valve and then switch it on again, everything functions normally and continues to do so for as long as the machine is on. What concerns me is that this is a new phenomenon, and that real trouble with the steam valve may lie ahead. My guess is that I need new o-rings. Because the PL60 is now discontinued, I find no photos on your website of what those o-rings look like in place. I'm quite willing to replace them, but I need a photo to do it. But perhaps my potential problem is more serious. Any help or advice you can give me would be most appreciated.

Although discontinued by Lelit, the Diana's espresso machine diagram is still available as well as most parts. When the steam boiler heats up, the vacuum valve is supposed to stay open and allow any vacuum pressure out. It will leak some water and steam from the top of the boiler. By opening the steam steam valve, you are further releasing the vacuum. Once the steam boiler builds up enough pressure, the vacuum valve closes on its own.

Otherwise, you are using too pure water and the steam boiler is overfilling with water. Or, the refill probe has limescale and the boiler is overfilling. Thus a greater leak.

At your own risk, you remove the top cover and try to trace back the leak and see what part it is coming from.

Sorry, this machine has been discontinued.

There is a separate switch for the steam boiler, but the coffee boiler must be powered on as well.

Steam boiler will not heat and no green light when you select the steam toggle. Coffee boiler works fine. When I look at parts diagram it show MC006 / 110 but when I look at your website it shows a pump that is square and not round like he two in my machine, please help I need coffee! 54. I have had a Diana for a few months now. When I extract hot water for tea or an Americano, the brew boiler temp goes down a few degrees. Why does this happen when I am pulling water from the steam boiler? Also, should I use powder or tablet for backflushing?

The reason is that the hot water comes from the brew boiler, and the cold water displaces the hot water. Since the water displacement is fast, a 110 volt machine takes a little bit to get back to temp.

Tablets or powder can be used for backflushing. However, powder is usually cheaper.

    56. What is the recommended maintenance and cleaning for this machine? The instructions do not cover this area. Are there considerations since there is a brass boiler and a stainless boiler? Should this machine be backflushed?

Answered by the admin The manufacturer does not provide this information because water quality is different. The water softener should be recharged up to 4x per month, the unit backflushed with detergent every 50 espresso extractions. Descaling only if there are issues. Brass boilers are more prone to limescale, but offer more temp stability. Stainless steel boilers are more slippery to limescale, but it can accumulate on the bottom of the boiler. Either way, its best to recharge the water softener.
    58. I have the PID for the brew boiler set at 200. When the machine warms up or after pulling a shot, the temp goes up to about 212-214, then comes down to about 195-196 before settling in at 200. Normal??

Yes, this is normal. This is called an overshoot. It happens because of the agressiveness of the PID to recover from the cold water entering the boiler. If there wasn't this aggressiveness in the PID settings, the temperature of the water in the boiler will lower faster without the aggressiveness.

Hence, when the overshoot occurs, the next extraction can be made because the temperature will lower from the incoming colder water.

Yes, it should work. However, the fineness of the grind usually needs to be coarsened as the basket holds ground coffee than other portafilter baskets.

As many folks misunderstand, the pump pressure created by a vibration pump is the result of the following three variables:

      a) amount of the coffee in the basket,
      b) the fineness of the grind, and
      c) the amount of tamp pressure.

These three variables create the 'resistance' that the pump has to push water through. If the resistance is too high, the bar pressure goes higher. Please coarsen the fineness of the grind and you should see the pump pressure drop.

While you can adjust the Over Pressure Valve inside the machine at your own risk, this will not always be a good indicator that you have the correct fineness of the grind.

    64. So what you are saying is that, although it may be possible to insulate the boilers, on this machine it may not be recommended? Does the Diana's steam boiler have a vacuum breaker valve? Is there an "aftermarket" insulation material available that doesn't break down or tend to mold? I ask this because I value the temp stability a bit more than the cup warming characteristic of uninsulated boilers. This isn't a deal killer for me. I just want to know if it would be an option in case I wanted to do it. Thanks for the info.

Yes, a Diana owner can insulate the boiler at their own risk. Sorry, we are unable to offer any suggestions on aftermarket insulation due to liability reasons.

The steam boiler does have a vacuum breaker valve.

    66. How hard would it be to find some kind of boiler insulation? It doesn't look like there is any from the photos. How difficult would it be?

Answered by the admin Machines from different manufacturers are designed differently. Every design has a trade off. In this machine, Lelit has decided not to place boiler insulation. Although boiler insulation 'can' reduce electrical usage and improve temperature stability, there are some negatives: a) When repairing the boilers or heating elements, it involves more work or paid labor, b) Some insulation can disintegrate, c) On steam boilers that have a vacuum breaker valve, water will spritz out of the boiler, which can wet the insulation and cause mold, and/or d) Although the boiler loses less heat, the uncovered tubes will release a greater amount of heat.
