Looking to upgrade your Single Boiler espresso machine? Take a look at the Lelit Elizabeth Dual Boiler.

Single boiler, dual-purpose system:

  • Brass – The small 250 ml boiler helps keep a constant water temperature and facilitate the espresso coffee extraction.
  • High wattage heating element – 1000 watt heating element for quicker reaction time when cold water enters the boiler.
  • Very quick warm-up time – We clocked the warm-up time for this machine (this includes the grouphead and portafilter when locked in) to be ~10 minutes. This is mainly due to the high wattage of the heating element and small size brass boiler. We found this to be very convenient for morning warm-ups, especially when in a rush.
  • Security thermostat and security valve – For better pressure control.
  • Three-way solenoid valve – Allows immediate removal of the portafilter immediately after the espresso extraction has ceased (or when the pump switch in coffee mode is turned off).

Controls:

  • Power switch – Located on the back right of the unit. Not difficult to reach and also keeps it out of the way of the rest of the main controls.
  • Three-way switch – Located on the front middle of the unit. Selects between the different modes. The up position is the steam mode. The middle is hot water mode. The down is the coffee mode.
  • Pump switch – Located on the front right of the unit. Used to activate the pump for coffee or hot water mode.
  • Steam/water knob – Located on the right of the espresso machine. Allows you to control the intensity of the steam or water output.

Steam/water wand:

  • Multi-purpose – Used for both steam or hot water depending on the current mode.
  • Multi-directional – Enables you to prepare creamy cappuccinos.
  • Very short wait time – The small boiler and high wattage heating element, combined with the PID controller cut the wait time from coffee to steam considerably.
  • Polymer tubing – The tubing that connects the boiler to steam / hot water valves are alimentary. They can withstand high pressure, withstand high temperatures up to 620 °F, facilitate easier repairs, and most importantly, are limescale free.

Construction:

  • Stainless steel body and frame – Polished to a mirror finish and rust-resistant.
  • Water tank visibility – There is an opening on the left side of the machine that allows you to see the water level. This is a lot easier than opening the top cover and peeking in.
  • Drip tray – The tray is made of plastic. The cover is made of stainless steel. Both are removable for easy cleaning.

PID display & pressure gauge:

  • PID display – Allows the temperature of the boiler to be programmed for different coffees.
  • Pressure gauge – Displays in real time the pressure during coffee extraction. You only need 9-10 bars to make espresso. This gauge will help perfect your espresso shot.

Vibratory (Vibration) pump:

  • Efficient – 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. Only 9 bar is necessary to extract espresso, and also wattage has no correlation to longevity.
  • Cost-effective – Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will be less costly than a rotary vane pump.

Accessories included:

  • Portafilters – Dual spout portafilter.
  • Filter baskets – 1-cup filter basket which holds approximately 7 grams. 2-cup filter basket which holds approximately 14 grams. Pod filter basket for use with E.S.E. pods. 57 mm in diameter.
  • Tamper – A cheap plastic tamper. Manufacturers will normally include a tamper like this to keep the overall selling price of the machine low. We recommend upgrading to a better tamper.
  • Coffee scoop – A simple plastic scoop if you are using preground coffee.
  • Instructional manual.
Notes

Espresso Machine Warning:

  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. the lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat or the wiring inside.
  • WATER WARNING: To increase the useful life of and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and without magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled water, purified water, nor reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale.
  • DESCALING WARNING: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. The reason is that too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine.

  1. WARNING: This is a single boiler machine. Machines in this class do not fill the internal boiler from the reservoir automatically. Since the water level drops in the boiler during steaming, you need to replenish this to avoid damage to the heating element. The only way to do this is to run water through the steam wand with the hot water switch. This does not apply when extracting espresso.
  2. Use with pods: This machine is pod-capable. Please note though, shots from pods will never be as good as a pod-only machine. Also, pods will not be as good as fresh consistently ground coffee used on this machine.
  3. Similar Lelit models: Just to prevent any possible rumors, we are NOT clearing out any PL41 inventory for the PL51 model made by Lelit. We will not be carrying the PL51 machine as we do not like the cheaper switches placed on this machine, plus the fact that there is no three-way solenoid valve (suitable to have as this allows the user to immediately remove the portafilter right after turning off the coffee switch).
  4. Maximum pump pressure: 15 bar (hint: a machine only needs 9 bar of brew pressure for espresso extraction. Anything higher is only a gimmick started by different manufacturers many years ago to attract sales. Since a few manufacturers do this, many have followed suit).
  5. PID fluctuation: Please note that during an espresso extraction, the incoming cold water will reduce the temperature in the PID display. This is normal. In steam mode, the temperature shown on the PID display will be higher than the programmed temperature.

Warranty Information

Who handles the warranty

Eligible warranty for Lelit home equipment is handled by 1st-line Equipment or representative thereof. If you have purchased your Lelit equipment from another retailer (not 1st-line Equipment), you must contact them first in order to get your equipment serviced under warranty.

What does the warranty cover

The warranty is limited to manufacturer’s defects only.

Regarding espresso machines: Limescale buildup can lead to problems with your machine. The warranty will not cover any repairs if our technicians find limescale in your machine. Although descaling can be a good alternative to remove limescale causing minerals (calcium and magnesium), we strongly suggest that prevention is the best form of maintenance. The reason is that descalers can cause wear and tear on components inside an espresso machine. This includes gaskets, o-rings, and other metal components. However, where there is a clog somewhere, descaling will be a necessity on the specified part, area, or entire machine.

Regarding coffee grinders: As with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered on and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result occurs, this will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.

When does the warranty expire

The manufacturer’s warranty on new equipment is good for a period of 1 year from date of receipt which covers parts. Labor warranties may vary depending on the company you purchase from. Lelit products may have an extended warranty limited to manufacturer’s defect and will specifically state the extended period of time on your receipt.

Where will my equipment be serviced

In most cases, your Lelit equipment must be sent to a repair facility. If 1st-line Equipment will be servicing your equipment, you must either ship it or drop off at our facility in New Jersey.

How do I send in my equipment in for repair

If you are inside the warranty period and have purchased it from us, please contact us. Please be ready to provide the following information: invoice# of purchase, model of equipment, and a detailed description of the issue.

If you are outside the warranty period, whether you have purchased the equipment from us or not, please order a diagnosis. Please note that wait times can be up to 8 weeks. Our technical support staff can have a back log of repairs. As an alternative we have a listing of 3rd party repair companies across the USA that can assist you.

Finding your part
  • Please use the parts diagrams provided below to determine the part(s) you need. Then use our search box above to find the part(s) on our website. If no results come up, more than likely we do not stock the part.
  • If uncertain, please go to the equipment model or part product page. Then use the Q&A tab found on that web page to ask your question.
  • Lastly, and only if the first 2 options were exhausted, please use our parts inquiry page.
  • Our call center does not have the training to handle parts inquiries for over 60,000 different parts items. Asking any questions regarding parts will more than likely result in you being referred to the above steps.
  • Please note also that all parts purchases are non-returnable or refundable and do not include technical support, instructions, or warranties as the purchase price of any part does not cover the cost of technical support. Technical support is available for repairing equipment in our shop.
  • Sorry, we will only special order a part for a model we carry AND was purchased through our supply chain.
  • Since we are unaware of the mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing expertise of a parts buyer or the tools owned by a parts buyer, we are never able to advise if a self-repair can be performed.

I've had a Lelit Pl41TEM for several years. I bought it second hand and have been very happy with it. But one thing I've noticed with my machine is that I have to turn the handle of the portafilter well past the 90 degrees when I pour a shot. I notice on most machines that it seems to lock into place with the handle facing forward to the user. I've never understood why mine doesn't do this. It's not an issue with the seal as I've tried replacing this and also there are no leaks when I pour a shot. Just curious.

It is either a bad seal, defective grouphead cover held in with 4 screws, mis-installed grouphead cover, or a worn out portafilter.

Why do you think it is the pump or solenoid valve? It could be your grinder or the preparation or a combination of both. We say this because when a pump or solenoid fails, you will typically see the issue ALL THE TIME! Please read our manometer article to get a better understanding and next step

    4. Streaming water from Steam Wand. I've had a Lelit Anna for 2 years. Now, when I pull a shot, water flows out of the steam wand. It doesn't just drip; it comes out in a steady flow, and nothing comes out of the portofilter. The flip switch is set on "coffee," not "water." I don't think the threads are stripped because I never use the steam wand. I only make espresso. I descaled the machine twice. No help. The machine is useless as is. Please advise.

If the wand was never used, then it sounds like the coffee grinds are too fine. It could also be water corrosion as damaged the valve. Please run a descaler through the wand and see if it resolves.

A To: administrator. I never said that I had never used the steaming wand, just that I use it rarely. I also said that I had run a descaler through twice already to no effect. As to the coffee grounds, that can not possibly be the problem for two reasons. 1) Before the machine broke I was pulling excellent shots at 27 to 30 seconds with no problem , and I have not changed the grind of the coffee, 2) If I put NO coffee in the portafilter (i.e., it is empty) and flip the switch to produce coffee, the water still comes out of the wand (open or closed) and no water comes out of the portafilter. Suggestions?
      Answered by the admin

This is exactly stated in the original question:

"...because I never use the steam wand."

Thanks for pointing out the descaling. you probably need a new steam valve stem. Please note this may not fit some older models. If this does not work, then water corrosion has damaged the brass steam valve.

A Thanks for answering. You say I need a new "steam valve stem." Is this the same as the part 742 "Lelit MC742 Multi-Directional Steam Wand"? If it is , do I just unscrew and remove the old one and screw the new part into place? Also, before I purchase the part, is there a way to tell if "water corrosion has damaged the brass steam valve"?
      Answered by the admin

Please read the Q&A terms. We ask that you pose new questions and not reply to the original.

The steam wand is a different item. Parts can be referred in the different diagrams for the different versions of the Anna. There are many versions.

With a simple search of our web site, we have a document on the removal from a previous version.  There is a secondary document.

Please remove the steam valve stem on your machine and check against the original link we provided. Use the picture on our web site.

We understand this can be frustrating, but this is what our techs deal with. It is not easy by any manufacturer.

    6. Well-loved Anna TQE purchased here 2014. My machine has started overheating, and I believe the heating element is now toast, but I'm wondering what might have caused it? The machine starts up and can pull shots normally, but when left on after 20-30 minutes the display is flashing at 125C and its apparent that the boiler is empty. Hit the coffee switch to refill the boiler and the temperature drops before getting over-temp again. There is no noticeable water or steam leak. The machine now has a chlorine smell after sitting powered on long enough to steam off the entire boiler and likely destroy the element. Any idea what may be the root cause? Any help will be much appreciated - thank you!

Mold is a characteristic of your local area. The tubes would need to be removed internally from a COLD and UNPLUGGED FROM ELECTRICAL OUT machine. Soaked in bleach overnight. Rinsed with water, soaked in white vinegar overnight, then rinsed for at least 5 minutes under running water through the tubes.

Sorry, we do not have an ETA at this time.

    18. We continue to our enjoy our machine. We've now replaced at the grouphead (MC047Sil)/(MC137) to stop a small leak. But, in doing that we have made the leak worse. I've gone back and removed/reseated the new silicone gasket and re-tightened the bolts/screws. On checking the inside, it all appears clean without any loose connectors to the steam wand or other obvious leak spots. So, I suspect we've not done the replacement correctly. Are there suggestions on what else could be behind the leak? Its a slow, modest drip that happens only after pulling a shot. The steam setting does seem to accelerate it, but is not sufficient (by itself) to produce any leak. There is no leak without putting pressure on for the espresso shot. With the second re-doing of the gasket, there's now a new leak at the outside corner of the machine.

A I've now redone this for a third time -- after watching more videos on other machines -- for this time I tried to get the silicone gasket to be further up towards the screen, rather than firmly at the base of the grouphead. This gives the same result as after the 2nd try. I just ordered Molykote lubricant and will try that. I've confirmed that the new gasket is identical to the previous one. So, this is not a problem with the gasket. The portafilter locks in the same place (very snugly) after all tries. I've done both 16 gm and 18 gm fills and am getting the same leaking. The pressure is about 8-9 bar, so I don't think its a problem with the actual pressure or the coffee grind or the coffee amount.
A Also trying to puzzle out the new leak at the left front of the machine (opposite side to steam knob). This only happens at the end of the shot -- maybe 30 seconds along -- but is a much larger amount of water (not steam). This must be from the grouphead and the gasket not being set, but I am not sure that I can see why it is now leaking from the grouphead into the machine.
A Now pursuing the possibility that this is something with the OPV -- that position in the interior would be about where the left side leak is happening -- I'm also less sure that the gasket exchange has been done wrongly -- if the leak is from something else, then that would explain why its still leaking after replacing gasket and screen. But, all the hoses look good and I'm not visually seeing any indications of something wrong -- any input would be appreciated.
A Went through multiple videos at Lelit Insider -- one suggested running the machine with the cover off to discover where a leak is found -- exactly what I'd wondered whether it was alright to do -- the only (and quite serious) warning is to be careful not to touch inside while it is running. I also suspect any water under pressure could spray out. Anyway, filmed it, and the leak seems to be coming from the base of the boiler where it sits on the inside of the metal. I'll be ordering a new o-ring for this (MC046) and will give it a try. I don't think the problem was the screen/headgroup gasket. Our use of this over the last year and a half has been nearly daily, but also quite modest. We've also kept after the machine, so the headgroup gasket, even when we took it out, had looked reasonable (not like some of the pictures of those that ignored warning signs and left it in). We are about 6-months past the warranty from 1st-line, so we'll continue to work on it here -- but would appreciate any suggestions or comments -- again all the flow lines and valves seems to be fine and the video showed water welling from the base of the boiler as we pulled the shot.

      Hi,

From the parts diagram, it shows SKU MC742 as the steam wand assembly. If you visit the parts page, you can see a parts breakdown of the steam wand. At a certain point, they went from a female-threaded steam tip to a male-threaded steam tip. Both of which are 1-hole tips. Currently, we do not know of any 2-hole or 3-hole tips that are compatible.

      Hi,

Currently, we sell 2 dosing tools. Both will fit the Lelit 57mm portafilter. However, keep in mind it will add height when connected and may not fit the clearance on some grinders.

The IDR connects to the portafilter head and will work for 57 or 58mm portafilters. It adds ~3/4" to the height.

The Motta Funnel sits on top of the portafilter head and also works for both 57 and 58mm portafilters. It adds ~ 2 1/8" to the height.

Before buying one, add the height stated above to your portafilter height, and double-check the clearance on your grinder.

Our answers are interjected into your inquiry

      1. I am wanting to clean and properly maintain my steam wand, group head and machine overall. 1.) What solution would you recommend for steam wand cleaning/maintenance and what frequency should I be performing cleaning / maintenance?

      A. Wipe your steam wand with a moist non-abrasive cloth after every use. If milk residue builds up, then soak overnight with hot water which will cool, then wipe in morning. If the milk is browned, then use a milk wand cleaner. We also suggest, but not required, to use our special sponges for steam wand cleaning.

      Q. Completely open to utilizing a water/vinegar solution or if there is a rinse aid type product that is better to use please pass along and steps to follow.

      A. Vinegar typically does not clean milk residue, plus may impact milk frothing negatively.

2.) I currently utilize Cafiza, and follow the bottle instructions for backflush, to clean the group head out during backflush, which I do 1 time every 50 or so shots. Do you recommend another method for cleaning the group head or will this suffice?

      A. We are moving more towards Puly Caffe since their ingredients seem to be more environmentally friendly.

3.) What other group head maintenance would you recommend?

      A. Simple rinsing with water between the 50 detergent backflush routine. Some custoemrs will backflush without detergent, but this may wear down the pump faster.

4.) What other annual, no-annual, quarterly, monthly, etc. maintenance and or cleaning/part replacement would you recommend so I can hopefully have a 20 year old plus lifespan for my machine?

      A. It is rare for any espresso machine to last 20 years. Descaling is no longer recommended unless needed because the chemicals will eat away at the metals, gaskets, and orings. Thsi si why soft water is important.

    42. If we plan to have our espresso machine, sitting idle for months at a time (not drinking espresso as much) what is the proper way to “winterize” or prep our machine for those longer periods of use? We already empty the reservoir, but we are not sure if we should keep the water softener filter soaked in water separately or is it okay to let it dry out? Is there any purging of the lines (to empty all water) needed or should we just purge the group head and steam wand (run water / steam through for 10/15 seconds) really well, once we refill the reservoir and are ready to use? Thank you for any winterizing tips and steps to take when we are wanting to begin using again.

After filling the reservoir and immediately after powering on, the operator needs to depress the hot water switch or coffee switch to get water from the reservoir to the boiler and out through the wand. This is clearly stated in the section Starting of the Machine line 10.

The machine may have been damaged as the heating element must be submerged in water from the start.

If the above procedure is not performed, the heating element will cause a melt down. The meltdown of the element then trips the GFI.

Are your GFI outlets older than 3 years? If yes, then the GFI could also be the problem.

Unfortunately, like many customers with a similar issue, the espresso machine always gets blamed, when in fact this is a grinder or a coffee problem. The blind test performed already usually indicates the machine is working as it should.

A How disappointing. You gave an easy answer without looking closer at the situation. I've been making espresso for over 20 years and I'm pretty sure it is not 'user error'. If I have to figure this problem myself, my current guess is that the solenoid valve is stuck closed and only water without pressure is coming through.
      Answered by the admin

It is an easy answer, and a question/issue we see and hear a lot.

Based on your statement, "... I have tried back flushing and the machine goes to 13-14 bars and the overflow valve works."

It is not a machine problem. Again, you are pointing 'blame' to the machine. If the solenoid valve was stuck CLOSED as you suggest in your second comment, water would not come out of the grouphead OR you would not be able to remove the portafilter with the blind filter inserted after reaching 13-14 bars.

Just because you have been making espresso for 20 years does not qualify you for espresso machine diagnosis and repair. In fact, you already replaced the pump and it did not solve it.

We also did not state user error.

You asked for a suggestion, and we gave you free guidance on a 10 year old machine. If you do not want to listen to our guidance, then this is your prerogative.

A I would be happy if the problem is my fault and there is nothing wrong with the machine. I will review my grind and tamping methods. However the problem still exists and until it is resolved, the machine is sill part of the situation.

The steam knob can be pulled out as it is held by friction. Chances are someone was overturning the knob until the internal portion cracked and it no longer functions properly. Please review the Lelit diagrams for the correct part number that can be searched on our web site.

A Thank you for your reply. What part do you think is damaged? What part prevents the knob to be pulled out too far? The steam, the nut or the o-rings. Are the o-rings sold separately?
A I have had a similar issue with the knob after only one year and a half of use. It looks like a weak part of the PL41TEM.

    98. I purchased a Lelit PL41TEM in July from you and I was wondering if there is a recommended way to plumb the machine to a water source? I recently found out that there are high levels in my local water so I'm planning on switching to using 5-gallon bottles and figured I could try to plumb a line off the 5-gallon bottle pump directly to the espresso machine. I don't believe the PL41TEM is direct-plumb ready, so maybe I would just have to do something a bit custom with a water sensor in the espresso machine tank that would trigger the 5-gallon pump? But I wanted to check to see if there is any recommended approach before proceeding.

    104. Hello, I have had my machine for approximately one year. Over the past couple months, I’ve had intermittent issues with pressure. Sometimes, the machine works fine-pressure to 9 bar and I get a nice shot. Occasionally, pressure will rise to 9, then during extraction, suddenly drop to 0 or just above 0. When this happens, I’ve noticed that there is very minimal water flow from the group head. Usually, I can “fix” the problem by back flushing with a blank (water, no coffee washer) or by running a frothing cycle. No change in grind or coffee. I have a new pump and solenoid valve. Running the blank test usually gives me normal operation but sometimes I get the sudden pressure drop. Any thoughts?

If you have a new pump and solenoid valve, there may be a voltage issue when your outlet is under strain. A blind filter run for 60 seconds will usually show this if the heating element kicks on and the pump pressure drops. The blind filter also tells us the machine is under pressure and there are no leaks at long as the pressure reaches 9-10 bar on the gauge. At this point, it would then point to the grinder or the coffee.

      Answered by the admin

The only other thing to check is the OPV and making sure the boiler is not emptying out. And, make sure you are refilling the boiler AFTER steaming milk as steaming creates an air pocket in the boiler.

A I have tried the blind and it works. I have also tried a variety of coffee with consistent grind and again, it works just fine on occasion. How do I check the OPV? How to I ensure the boiler is filled after steaming? I usually steam, then switch to the hot water mode, let it get to temp, then dispense hot water for 10 seconds before switching back to coffee brew mode.

    112. Purchased the PL41TEM less than a year ago. Within the last week it appears the pump is starting to fail intermittently while pumping. During a brew, the pressure will raise to normal (green zone) for most of the shot, then sometimes will drop to zero pressure / no flow. It still makes the vibration noise so I don't think it is an electrical power issue with the switch. Sometimes cycling the pump switch on and off will recover the flow. I did a descale to see if that would help but doesn't appear to have made any difference. Does not sound like a solenoid valve issue since the valve is already open & functioning when the pressure drops. Any ideas out there? Time for a new pump already? Better ways to clean it?

Answered by the admin This valve is mechanical. If it was fussed with, it can be damaged. There can also be some grit or limescale holding it open. Run a descaler through the machine and put a blind to force the descaler through the OPV (over-pressure valve).

    128. Looking through the Q&A regarding descaling I came across this response from the admin. “In the past, we used to recommend descaling on a monthly basis. However, we found that over long periods of time, the descaling solution can start leaching out metals. We then shifted towards treating the water used as opposed to letting limescale build-up and then descaling. It's a lot easier and there's less down time for your espresso machine.” I am the second owner, first owner received it as a gift and used it maybe five times then sold it to me. Since owning it we have back-flushed with Urnex Cafiza every 50 shots or so, but It has never been descaled and we have not tested the tap water to verify softness level (just learned that we need to do this, so trying to correct here forward). Given that information should I descale it once and then treat the water we use here forward or no to descaling but ensure no lime scale build up and if so just treat the water? If so: - What product/process is recommended to descale? -How/where do we check our machine to identify lime scale buildup? -How do we identify if metals are or have been leaching, or does this only happen is descaling has been done? -What are the recommended ways to treat and test the water (we travel with our machine) to ensure proper pH level prior to using my Lelit PL41TEM? -What is recommended routine preventative maintenance aside from back-flushing and treating the water prior to use? -What components need to get changed at “X” months/years/# of shots during its lifetime to ensure it keeps running efficiently for years to come? -What components need to get changed at “X” months/years/# of shots during its lifetime to ensure it keeps running efficiently for years to come?
      A. Portafilter gasket and dispersion screen replacement every 6-24 months depending upon usage. Dispersion screens need to be looked up on the diagrams on our web site as there are different versions for different years.

    130. I just upgraded from an ~7 year old Lelit without a pressure gauge to the Anna/PID and needless to say am eager to play with the pressure. With the blind insert the pressure gauge reads 10 bar so the factory set point of the OPV must be 10 bar. I am getting a 43-50 g shot (depending on grinder setting) from 14-18 g coffee in the double shot portafilter basket in 30 seconds and the pressure is 9.5 bar (it gets transiently to 10 bar in the beginning). Should I increase the OPV setting? If so to what value (11 bar = end of green range or 16 bar = end of scale)? Interestingly my old Lelit would choke on pre-ground Illy espresso. My new machine chokes at 10 bar if I turn the grinder knob 5-10 revolutions in the finer setting on my Fred grinder.

It all depends upon the espresso blend, the grind, and the amount of coffee in the basket. Lots of parameters. Many customers want the OPV set at 9 bar which means 10 bar on the gauge. It is your machine, and you can change the OPV setting. However, we are not responsible for any damages that can occur.

    138. Hello, I have a Lelit PL41TEM I received about 6 weeks ago. I followed all startup instructions, use a Lelit water softener filter, always pre-heat the machine with a full boiler and flush/wipe the grouphead after each shot. However, ~50% of the time water will not come out of the grouphead, regardless of whether I'm brewing a shot or just flushing the grouphead (but I can still hear the pump running). When this happens, if I switch to hot water mode, open the steam valve and turn on the pump, water comes through the steam wand with no issue. I usually have to switch a couple of times back and forth between hot water and coffee mode, running the pump for a few seconds each time, in order for water to start coming out of the grouphead. This does not seem normal especially for a new machine. Is this an issue with the solenoid valve not properly switching to coffee mode? And why would it work sometimes, but other times water will only flow through the hot water/steam wand? Thank you in advance.

A What you are experiencing is certainly not normal. My guess would be that it could a bad solenoid, a bad toggle switch, or loose wiring. Can't really be sure based only on the symptoms so I would suggest first troubleshooting with a voltmeter/ohmmeter to determine what is failing. Takes a bit of patience to diagnose intermittent problems but its usually better than just replacing parts unnecessarily on a hunch. I have been using my PL41TEM almost daily for several years with no problems so can't speak from actual experience. Good luck.
A If it’s brand new, you may want to contact the company and return it for a new one. That is not normal!
A There are some people at 1st Line that really understand these machines and repair them all the time. I'd call them for advice. This is likely some part malfunction. Just a thought. Try things without the softener filter attached, maybe it's restricting the water intake.
A I am having the exact same issue you are having. I have had my machine for over a month. I've already contacted 1st line and they have been helpful in trying to figure it out. We've done all kinds of testing. As of right now, they think something is in the black box (their wording) and has sent me some Dezcal to use in the system to see if that works.

A I have the exact same issue, however, it only seems to occur if I leave the pf in a few minutes after pulling a shot. If I remove it directly after pulling a shot it usually stays in the basket. When it's stuck to the screen I pull the pf out enough and dislodge it with my finger so the puck drops into the pf. I could be wrong on this but it seems the three-way solenoid valve isn't doing that good of a job drying the puck. It dry's the puck for sure but just not enough. I never had this issue with my Breville barista express now matter how soon or long I left the pf after pulling a shot.
A I have the issue too, but for me it depends on the coffee. Some coffees leave a puck that consistently pops out and the portafilter screen is clean as a whistle (Chromatic Shadow Puppet is one), others leave residual grinds.
A Maybe it’s the beans you are using. If they’re too oily that could be the reason for the sticking. I rarely have this problem. And sometimes I don’t remove the PF immediately, sometimes I leave it for 10 minutes.
A Same issue about 90% of the time! Dislodge the portafilter and lower about 1/2 inch and flip on the pump for just a sec and the puck will drop right down into the portafilter! That is what I do and seems to work well. Blessings!
A Haven't figured out why it sticks, doesn't seem to matter how long I wait, how full basket, type of coffee etc. I just give the portafilter a slight side wiggle as I lower it after unscrewing it and it drops it back in basket every time.
A I used to get that once in a while too. I don't think it hurts anything. You do need to clean the dispersion screen with a brush after each shot to make sure old grounds aren't affecting your shot. I got a Lelit bottomless portafilter that comes with a 20g. basket, so when I put 16 or 17 g. in it's not jammed up against the dispersion screen.

I noticed that it is also recommended to not descale this machine very often - is that because there is some risk of lead corroding out of the boiler or other parts?

      Hi,

Here is a document from Lelit about the metals used for their boilers: Heavy Metals Migration.

In the past, we used to recommend descaling on a monthly basis.  However, we found that over long periods of time, the descaling solution can start leaching out metals.

We then shifted towards treating the water used as opposed to letting limescale build-up and then descaling.  It's a lot easier and there's less down time for your espresso machine.

A I think about it this way: (1) the milk has to roll in the pitcher much like a pot of water on a rolling boil the entire time - no roll and you aren't introducing air, and (2) you move the wand deeper or shallower to adjust how much air you put into it. You achieve the roll in the milk by the angle and position of the wand, I find putting the wand in on a slight angle, off center but not too close to the edge is ideal, but just play with it until it looks like the milk is really moving around, and don't be afraid to open the steam valve pretty much full on, and as for (2) I tend to add more air with a very shallow depth at first then go deeper to kind of work the air into the milk to get that ideal, white paint texture. The sound changes depending on how much air you are adding, and when you are almost about to pull the wand out of the milk and make a mess, you are putting the most air in.
A I too had many problems frothing milk in the past, which I think explains why the turbo-frother was invented, and is a feature of many low end machines. The secret of frothing, and what the turbo frother does, is to mix in atmospheric air with the steam from the nozzle (exploitation of The Bernoulli effect). To do this without a turbo frother, you need to hold the tip just at or below the surface of the milk at an angle. What happens is atmospheric air gets mixed in with the steam, creating greater volume. If you get spattering, you are holding the tip too high, if you get a roiling effect at the surface, it’s just right. Holding the tip too deep just gives you hot milk.
A Keep the tip just barely below the surface to get some bubbles mixed in. Not too much but enough for a little hiss. Once they are formed and the milk is warm, then put the wand further under the surface to mix it up more. Artisti Coffee Roasters on YouTube has a good video on this. You can practice the technique with water and dish soap. https://youtu.be/VCCcZ619-TM

Leak may be coming from inside. Otherwise, grind may be too fine.

A This happens to me too whenever I put too much coffee in the portafilter (same problem in my Rancilio Silvia). The portafilter can’t twist completely into place because the coffee puck hits the screen before the edge seals against the gasket. The water then leaks over the gasket. Try reducing the amount of coffee slightly, I think that will solve your problem. My gaskets last for years.
A I get this too sometimes. For me the double basket holds 16g. just barely. As the admin said, you may have a bit too much coffee in there. Also, if there are any coffee bits on the rim of the portafilter or on the gasket, it might not seal completely and water will spray out to the side. I don't think it hurts anything. I just clean the gasket thoroughly with a damp paper towel or a sponge and then clean it briefly with a grouphead brush after every shot.
    162. I had one question, and please excuse my ignorance if it is a nonsense question as this machine is my first foray into espresso. On the tip of the steam wand (the part you can screw off) the black O-ring was pinched between the metal when it was screwed closed originally, causing it to bulge a bit. When I unscrewed the tip to fix it the O-ring is a bit frayed from being trapped and as a result a little bit of water leaks out when steaming. I would love to get a replacement, or if it's like a 10 cent piece i can get at any hardware store I don't really mind picking one up, I wasn't sure if there was a specific "food grade" version of them or anything. Also if it is normal for a slight leak from this area just let me know!

Answered by the admin If the blind filter is showing 11 bar on the gauge, there is nothing wrong with the machine. This 11 BAR pressure is showing that the pump can achieve the minimum 9 bar which is needed to make espresso and the 11 BAR pressure is showing the over pressure valve (OPV) is working correctly. The pump can make different noises dependent upon the resistance created by the grind fineness, amount of coffee in the basket, and tamping pressure. Unfortunately, this is not a machine problem, but a grind fineness problem.

A My Anna pressure gauge is right in the middle of the green zone when the grind is perfect and the double shot takes about 25 seconds. You have a defective pump or a defective gauge, I hope you are still under warranty. Editor's Note: This may not be true. A defective gauge usually does not move at all. A defective pump can be tested by using the blind. It could also be the OPV is partially stuck open or was modified. Lastly, it is mot likely the grind fineness.

A Yes, this machine does not have a built-in coffee bean grinder.
A You could theoretically use espresso grind coffee, though it somewhat defeats the purpose of home espresso-making. (Preground coffee does lose significant volatile flavor compounds over a short interval after grinding.) Also, since control over brewing is largely based on the fineness of the grind, you'll have very little control if the grind you purchased is slightly too coarse or too fine, and you end up brewing espresso that's either under- or over-extracted. I have found the Lelit Fred grinder to be a quite acceptable pairing with this machine, in the $250-300 range, probably about as low as you can go, price-wise and still get acceptable results. My grinder has lasted 7 years, with no problems. If you are a beginner looking for a very forgiving machine that doesn't require much fussing with grind or tamp force, a pressurized portafilter machine may make more sense for you--though all higher-end machines work with non-pressurized filters (as does this Lelit). You can get an espresso shot that's quite acceptable to the average coffee drinker, using a pressurized portafilter (particularly if you are planning on using the shots in milk-based drinks (IMHO). You can't get great espresso this way, but it's easy. Yes, you can plug this machine directly into a 120V outlet, I see no need for surge protection and do not use a surge protector for my unit. I do of course have GFCI circuits in my kitchen, to protect me in the event of any water/electric current contact.
A In my opinion, you will need to grind your own coffee, using a fairly high-end grinder, because espresso shots should time out to about 25 seconds. If the grind is slightly off, you will get either a very fast shot, which will just be strong coffee, or just a drip-drip because the coffee will act as a dam. I find I need to adjust the grind frequently, based on the brand of coffee, humidity and temperature. I previously owned a Saeco with a pressurized portafilter that will work with pre-ground coffee, but that machine is no longer on the market.
A To person above that had the Saeco with pressurized portafilter - I have a Saeco Barista in perfect condition and I'm looking at upgrading to the Anna PID. I'd be curious to hear about your upgrade experience and thoughts. Thanks.

A I recall that the OPV was in the 12-15 psi range out of the box. I easily adjusted it down to 8 psi. Some would argue that there is no need to do that and I can not say I know better. I just did it anyway.
A Oops. I should have said BAR and not psi in my previous answer.
A Yes it’s set to 9 bar and it’s up to 15 bar...
A On my model, the pressure gauge will get to 12 bar if I grind the beans too fine. In this case the coffee just drips from the portafilter, but also I do not notice water accumulation in the drip tray from a triggered OPV. When ground perfectly, I find the pressure gauge registers 9 to 10 bars (green zone) and the double shot takes about 25 to 30 seconds. I strongly advise you not to tamper with the OPV. The Lelit Anna has the three most important features you should look for in an espresso machine: 1) 2 way solenoid valve to relieve pressure in the head after a shot 2) PID temperature control so the water is always at the ideal temperature and 3) pressure gauge so you can see if you are over or under grinding your coffee. BTW, since this is your first machine, you should know that espresso is very sensitive to grind, you must always grind the coffee yourself and you need a pretty expensive grinder to get it right.

A I owned the Breville Infuser 840xl single boiler, and replaced it with the Anna PL41TEM. Pluses for the Breville: preinfusion is not a feature of the Anna. Can't say I notice the difference in the final product Automatic filling of the boiler isn't a feature of the Anna. If you forget to refill the boiler EVERY time you steam, you're at risk of burning out the heating element on the Anna. (If you try to steam a quart of milk all at once, you'd also be at risk of burning out the heating element, though why you'd ever need to do that isn't clear to me) Replaceable water filter is not a feature of the Anna. Automatic cleaning cycle is not a feature of the Anna. On the Anna, you have to flip the switch on and off half a dozen times every few weeks to do the cleaning manually. Automatic descaling cycle isn't available on the Anna, though descaling isn't necessarily recommended if using soft water in the machine. Advantages of the Anna, and the reasons I made the switch: PID on the PL41TEM has a visual display of the boiler temp--no guesswork as to whether the machine has properly heated up, or returned to the correct temp after steaming. Pressure gauge is calibrated in BAR, rather than the uncalibrated "espresso range" on the Breville Service on the Breville was a nightmare, unless you are comfortable shipping your machine back to the factory when it breaks, which it will, no guarantee you'll get your own machine back, either, they can ship you an equivalent refurbished machine at their discretion. NOBODY carries replacement parts for the Breville, and they are not available online, so you won't get the machine fixed at a local repair shop. Breville is not designed to be easily repaired at home, the assembly screws on my unit had corroded and locked after 3.5 years, making disassembly and home repair impossible. (Replacing the vibratory pump on the Breville wasn't difficult at the two year mark, and generic pumps are available online, but access to the pump on the Anna looks easier, and this is a common repair need on these machines after a few years. Full disclosure, I've had my Anna machine only for 12 months, and it hasn't needed repair. But many repair parts are readily available, on the 1st line site, and the machine is very similar to the Rancilio Silvia, which is widely repaired in local shops.) Steaming speed is about the same on the two machines. Wand design is similar on the two machines. Coffee quality is fairly similar on the two machines, to my possibly less than optimally sensitive palate. Bottom line: unless you won't remember to refill your boiler, the convenience of the additional automatic features of the Breville are outweighed by the advantages of the PID and pressure display on the Anna. If you don't have any local repair facilities where you are, and you wouldn't consider DIY for repair projects, then maybe the service issues on the Breville that drove my decision to switch to the Anna may not apply.
A No pre infusion unless you do it manually. This is a very hands on machine. Not a semi auto. Here is link to my video walking you through the basics of this machine. https://youtu.be/5vDm3zNww8o

A Rather than explain the various reasons for the overshoot of temperature after ending the shot or how to adjust the PID to reduce it, I suggest the following: After stopping the shot, power off the machine for 5-10 seconds and turn it back on. This will reset the PID so it is no affected by the initial large and fast drop in temp. This works for me.
A This is normal behavior for this machine, and was a surprise to me, but I assumed this is just how the PID worked. I only really got an understanding of it by looking at the orange LED on the front, which tells you when the boiler heater is off. When you are pulling the shot, initially the temperature sensor detects no change in temperature (and the LED stays on/boiler off), but as the boiler empties the temp goes down and the heater turns on/light goes off. When there is a larger discrepancy between the boiler temp and desired brewing temp, the heater will stay on for longer intervals (and the LED will stay off), which results in later overshoot of the temp. Since the heater coil is much hotter than 100 degrees, and residual heat conducts to the water in the boiler, temp of the water in the boiler rises even after the boiler power is off (This will be less of an overshoot than if you didn't have the PID, but still an overshoot). There's a graph of this behavior on the 1st-line site here: https://www.1st-line.com/technical-support/lelit-technical-support-page/pid-overview-lelit-pl41-anna-pl60-diana-models/ Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain why it takes longer to heat to 89 than to 90--it must be a result of the specific programming of the PID function as it relates to programmed temp.

Please do not use steam mode, nor leave the machine for more than 2 minutes when there is a water pumping issues. The reason is the boiler heating element can burn out.

Please remove any water softener attached and test through grouphead.

If water exits the grouphead, then the water softener needs recharge or replacement. If no luck, then test with water through the steam wand by opening the steam wand valve knob and depressing the water switch and pump switch.

If no water comes out of the grouphead nor the steam wand, then the pump may have an air pocket. Follow our procedure to remove.

If water only comes out of the steam wand, then the grouphead solenoid valve is clogged or defective. First, without any water softener in reservoir, backflush and test. Second, descale machine. Third, unplug machine from electrical outlet and allow to fully cool. Remove top cover by removing two screws on back top below reservoir lid and check if wires are connected to the black box on front right of machine. Lastly, the black solenoid valve may have gone defective which is very unusual.

Sorry, we are unsure which one you are referring to. The wand usually has o rings. Please note the specific location and connection points. ie steam tip to wand, wand to holding nut, etc.

As for warranty, it depends. If normal wear and tear or rough handling, gaskets and o-rings are not covered.

It probably needs a new pump, but no guarantee as we can not evaluate the machine.

Timers are BAD NEWS! If someone left left the coffee or water switch on, the pump would run until the pump melts down. Thus a bad smell. Heating element may now also have melted as well since the water may have drained from the boiler.

    198. I bought this machine in the fall. It has been working great. Recently, however, I noticed two things. First when I restricted the flow enough to get about a 30 second shot, the pump seemed to pulse just a little every few seconds. I usually pour a quicker, closer to 20 second shot and haven't noticed this pulse when I do the quicker shots. When it does pulse with the longer shots that the pressure reading bumps up a fraction of a bar for a fraction of a second. I also noticed when I backflushed last time the pressure only got up to around 10 and 11 bars, although I only usually let it build pressure for about 3 or 4 seconds before shutting it. Still, I thought in the past it got a little past 11 bars after 3 or 4 seconds, outside the green zone on the meter but maybe I am remembering wrong. So, my question is, does this sound normal or should I be concerned about the pump or something else?

A Does the pulsing correspond to the heating coil activating? The pulse could be due to that slight drop in current, it may be more noticeable when the pump is under greater load (just a guess.) Your back-flush pressure seems fine to me. I get just over 11 with mine when back-flushing, that's only if I let it go to it's peak. Shots are always solidly in the green area.

    208. I just recently purchased a Lelit Anna PL041TEM from you and I am also new to the espresso world so forgive me if these are ignorant questions. Over the past few months I have been practicing with the machine to pull doubles and have gotten fairly good at it, using the Lelit grinder I bought as well, practicing with my tamp pressure and learning to dial in the machine. I have been pulling fairly consistent shots until I ran into an issue, either operator error or machine error. The simplest way I can explain it, is that the brew pressure isn't reaching 9 bars like it was early in my use of the machine. I expected it to be just grind settings but I can make the grind (18g ) fine enough to choke the extracting to about 80 seconds for 2oz while the machine only reached 7.5-8 bars... My first inclination was that the pump was not reaching pressure, so I decided to backflush it to test. It reached 14bars as expected within a few seconds of the pump activation, so that alleviated my worries that it was a pump issue. I am having a hard time finding any information about a problem like this on forums so I am reaching out to you all who know Lelit the best. How would you suggest I trouble shoot a problem like this, could it be bad tamping technique that is allowing channeling? Is there a way an espresso grind be too fine and overtamped that the water finds a way around the puck, just at a slower rate? Is there a pressure release valve in the machine that is activating before 9bars of pressure? Any information you can give me will help to determine if this is operator error or a potential machine malfunction, if a phone call is easier than written explanation please feel free to call me at the number listed. Thank you!

The blind filter test is the best to show that the machine is operating correctly. It shows the gauge getting up to full pressure, it shows the OPV opens at a very high pressure, and of course, the pump is stressed at 14 bar. In addition, it proves there are no leaks in the solenoid valves, steam wand valve, nor inside the boiler as further evidence.

This now points to preparation. You need to find the right balance of grind fineness, the amount of ground espresso in the 2-cup filter basket, and the level tamping pressure.

Channeling usually shows in the basket after the extraction. Channeling usually creates gushers and fast flows.

The F.03 will not show in the PID menu as in the Version 1.04 software. We have the following instructions for Version 1.05 that will show on the PID display.

After the machine is primed with water through the wand, please allow machine to warm up to operating temperature. Depress and hold the right button for 3-5 seconds, and release until the OFF shows on the menu. Quickly and simultaneously depress and hold both buttons on the PID display for 3-5 seconds. C-F comes up on the display. Within 1 second, depress the right button quickly until you have F on the screen. Once the OFF message is displayed on the screen, depress and release the right button on the PID display. Power off the machine, and power on the machine.

Thanks for sending the photo. Please ALWAYS refer to the diagrams on our web site. There is multiple versions of the same model over the last 15 years. After, search for the part number and review the picture of what is on our web site. You may need to take off the part in question with the machine cold and unplugged from the elctrical outlet. This is to confirm if male or female threads are needed. Again, multiple versions of the same model makes it difficult for us just from a picture. It can be part MC105, MC238, or MC101 found on our web site.

In your case, it can be a faulty tube as well. You can also send the machine in for repair.

      Hi,

Here is a link to the parts diagram for the Lelit PL41TEM.

The dispersion screen is MC137. As far as we know this is the only screen that is available. The screw that holds this screen in place is MC139. The rubber gasket has now been replaced with a silicone version, MC047SIL.

For using pods, you would use the MC140 basket.

It's always had a slight problem of water leaking out of the steam wand while pulling a shot, which I've read is a common complaint about this machine, but lately the steam wand has been leaking much more, to the point that I feel it's affecting the water pressure into the grouphead (there's no gauge on the machine to judge pressure), producing a shot with less crema. Pressure for foaming milk seems unchanged. I've been good about descaling and backflushing, and replaced the grouphead gasket a while back. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Again, as stated on our web site, manufacturers will make changed without notification to us or our customers. Although we make our best effort to keep on top of these changes, sometimes we learn from our customers. This is the disadvantage to videos and so much product information on each product page. In fact, this is why the largest marketplace in the world allows so little information on products - the reason is because of the changes and they do not want to be liable for false advertising.

The 1.05 is most likely the new version software, and hence the difference in the procedure to change the C-F temperature scale.

    228. I appreciate you updating your FAQ page as you did; unfortunately, it does not address my question and what I expect will be that same question of other customers purchasing this equipment in the states. When both are pressed, after powering the unit on, “P.” shows on the display (not F03 as the link continues to suggest) and , as previously stated, “F.03” fails to appear as an available option. When just the right button is pressed, “Pr S” appears with no available additional selection available; I have yet to discern the reason for this function. When just the left button is pressed, the machine appears to power on no differently than it had were no button to have been pressed. How am I able to change the machine to Fahrenheit as was/is advertised? Fahrenheit offers a greater degree of control that I was counting on appreciating for the additional cost of the PID’s inclusion

Also, please let me know what else you recommend regarding regular maintenance and products for descaling and cleaning. One other thing I had a question about was steaming milk. The first time I used the unit to steam milk, I had the switch set to steam, but the I switched the pump on and turned the steam valve on the side. I just wanted to make sure this wouldn't have potentially hurt anything. I realized this was wrong when the pump pushed a bunch of hot water with the steam. We recommend short backflushing.

Water needs to be run through the wand after every steaming session. So, no harm done unless all the water was depleted from the boiler.

The little water is normal as this is condensation that build up in the pipe. Review the fundamentals on our video.

    234. Thanks for taking the time to reply. OK, I think I did not explain myself well. The overflow into the tray that I described comes at two different times. Nothing but water or water vapor comes from the steam wand, the wand is OK. The water I see dripping into the tray when the temperature for steaming is high, about above 130 celsius, comes through the same hose at the back of the tray. I think you called it an over pressure flow hose or release hose. When I do a shot of espresso, I am using the pressurized portafilter that I bought from you separately, because it was simply impossible to get pressures close to 8 bar and decent espresso without it, no matter the coffee used and pressure I put in the coffee. With the portafiler I can get up to 7 bar maximum. The "black stuff” I described earlier, also falls to the tray through the same release hose at the back of the tray when I make a shot. So that same hose drips both water when there is high temperature (and therefore, pressure), and when I am preparing espresso shots. It is not a little amount what I need to clean from the tray, every 3-4 shots there is the equivalent of one small espresso cup of stuff in the tray coming from that hose. It is not alright. Now, cause and effect. I use spring bottled water with almost no salts in it, have never used tap water, and no water softener is connected. The steam wand is OK, the release of water occurs through the release hose when using the wand at high temperatures (like for when steaming). Coffee: right now I use Lavazza ground coffee especially ground for espresso, which had never given me problems with my previous espresso machines (e.g., Saeco) although I did try other coffees and grindings. So this is not a coffee matter, a descaling matter, nor an oxidation matter, the machine is almost new!. I bought this machine from you just a few months ago from you, please check your records. The question is how come is there over pressure flow released when both making espresso shots and steaming water when the pressure indicator never passes 7bar? It is either “a” or “b”. I have to say, finally, that to tell a customer “stop blaming the machine” when reporting a problem with a product in a honest way is not very polite. I spent more than $600 dollars, and while I can make decent coffee with the portafilter, the pressure in the meter is never higher than 7, and I need to clean the tray from this nasty black stuff mixed with water which is not only a few drops, it is a considerable and not acceptable amount, and I am sorry you are upset about it, but I am more upset, because I spent the 650 dollars. Is there not a warranty for this machine? Some type of service? I do not have a blind filter to backflush the machine so I cannot do what you say, but the machine has been doing the same thing since new. Thank you.

Thank you for the insight. Please understand we have sold over 70,000 European espresso machines. We have seen many instances, and many have been the water. We did not mean to insult you, but we requested to stop blaming the machine. We are unsure how you can determine that this is not a coffee matter, nor a descaling matter, and not an oxidation matter, but you are certain that it is a machine problem. We try to keep an open mind and review all variables. We ask that you do the same.

Your previous Saeco did not have a 3 way valve for coffee grinds to back track into the boiler. Saeco machines also have pressurized portafilters, not pressurized baskets as well as this stainless boilers that have rapid heat changes when pulling shots. So, it is a different set up. Do you know why they stopped making them?

Although your bottled water may not have salt, it may have other minerals you are not aware of.

Again, there is nothing black inside the machine that comes in contact with the water. Have you tried a different water? We had another customer who had a Rancilio Silvia. Actually, two of them. The first was old, and the water never gave him issues with the water. The second Rancilio was giving him similar black particles as you desscribe. He changed the water and the problem went away. So, why did the first machine not give him problems? The reason is that about 20 years ago, Rancilio put a brown tef coating on the inside of the boiler. Then about 18 years ago they removed it because of other issues caused by the coating. So, the water stood the same, but the machines changed. Changing the water solved the issue.

Yes, there is a warranty. If using the machine with a gallon of new water does not solve it, please email customer service for a repair authorization number.

    236. Thanks very much for your answer. But one important point: no matter what I do, the pressure indicator never goes above 7 bars, I have not been able to reach the “green area” that you describe as ideal. If I use less pressure on the tamping or put less coffee, the coffee goes through immediately, with no cream at all. I bought the pressurized porta filter, and even with this I cannot reach 8 bars, but at least the coffee cream is decent at max of 7bars. But the delay time in filtering is much less than what you suggest as ideal. Thus, the blackish stuff into the tray is probably not being released at 10 or 11 bars as you say. Something else is wrong in this machine, I am afraid. Also, some water overflows into the tray not when I am making a shot, but when I am making foam and the water temperature exceeds 125 celsius or so. I can hear it, and I can see it (this is it clear water). So this is not related to the way I grind or tamp the coffee. The black stuff I also get in the tray has for sure coffee in it and is probably released when I make a shot. Do you have any ideas about what to do with the black stuff coming into the tray and also with the water when I make steam? Can I reduce the steam temperature in the machine? If reducing pressure does not help (and I do not think can be done without breaking the brass component that your video says we can turn with a screwdriver) what can be done? Reducing the pressure could help reduce the water released when I prepare steam, couldn't it? I really do not think this is related to the way I making my shots, and I am pretty experienced and never had these issues with similar (older) espresso machines. If anything, I cannot reach high pressures at all. I was not expecting this from this Lelit machine

Although we respect your opinion, please stop blaming the machine. We work under the premise of cause and effect.

The best way to test the Anna espresso machine's pump is with a blind filter.  If the pressure can reach 10 or more bar, then the issue  is the coffee grinder. If the pressure can not reach 10-11 bar with the blind, then

      a) the pump is failing (pumps usually work or do not work), but there are very few unusual cases where they partially work, and/or
      b) the over pressure valve is opening too soon - this could be limescale or oxidation or the spring inside (highly unlikely as we these springs fail once every 10 years). Limescale and oxidation can stop the over pressure valve from making a complete seal, and/or
      c) you may have a leak in the steam wand which is not allowing full pressure within the system, and/or
      d) if there is a water softener attached to the intake tube, it may be clogging up with calcium and magnesium - it either needs to be replaced or recharged.

If you are getting black particles through the steam wand, this seems like you have limescale. There is nothing black inside the machine when manufactured. The only black piece is the rubber on the top tray and the drip tray. This is why we suggested to not blame the machine. 90% of the problem we solve are water issues.

The black particles can also be coffee dust resulting from the coffee grinder. As the three way solenoid valve opens up after shutting of the coffee switch, very minute coffee grinds can pass backwards to the dispersion screen, to the steam valve and back to the boiler. We have seen this before on different machines.

You will need to descale the machine with white vinegar or the descaler we recommend on the link. If this does not solve it, you may need to send the machine in for evaluation after we email a repair authorization which can be requested to customer service.

    238. I bought a Lelit Anna 4 months ago. The pressure seems excessive, as there is overflow on the tray, a dark liquid accumulates every time I make a shot. It is not little water, it is quite a bit. Your video indicates how to lower the pressure, but the brass nut is very tight and seems too delicate to be forced, it would not turn counterclockwise. Is there a way to reduce or eliminate the black coffee stuff expelled every time? for the price, I did not expect this. Thank you.

We understand your expectations. However, please note the vibration pump on espresso machines overcomes the resistance created by the amount of coffee in the basket, the grind fineness, and the tamping pressure. When these attributes create too much resistance, the pump will try to overcome them. If the resistance is greater than 10-11 bar, the over pressure valve opens up and releases the excess pressure to the drip tray.

The dark liquid is the three way valve allowing the water pressure over the grinds to also dissipate into the drip tray.

By lowering the over pressure valve, you will be allowing water to be released at a lower pressure and this will not solve your problem. In fact, it may make it worse. You need to find the right balance of amount of ground coffee in the basket, the right grind fineness, and the right tamp pressure to create a good espresso shot.

Holding down both PID buttons at startup brings up the back end programming menu. Please note that the machine can be damaged with a certain configuration of these settings. Hence, we only recommend it for changing C to F.

For Americano coffee beverages, 100 d C will start to create steam. Although oyu can do the 100 d C for a short time, we suggest 99 d C and the temperature in the boiler will decrease rapidly with the incoming cold water into the boiler.

Of course, I would pre-fill boiler after a couple of weeks of non-use (not that this would actually ever happen) or if the water tank were allowed to run dry (which might). Also, is there a limit to the volume of milk I could heat from 35F to 150F, before having to worry about the boiler running dry?

Great! The more often you run water through the wand or grouphead, the less chance of running the boiler dry and causing damage to the heating element - this being common on many dual purpose, single boiler espresso machines.

Typically, we see that about 16 ounces of milk can be steamed or frothed before refilling the internal boiler.

Sorry, we do not publish these because there are different versions of the same model, and if a customer makes a mistake, we then get blamed and become liable - especially for injury and damages.

This is why it is important mark the connections with numbers and to then take photos.

You may want to contact the manufacturer directly to see if they are willing to provide the wiring diagram. Otherwise, the machine would need to be shipped into our facility for diagnosis and service. We are sorry about this.

A Thank you for the reply. That makes sense regarding the liability. And in the future, I will indeed label first and take better pictures. Cheers!

There is a suction that occurs when the coffee brew switch is closed and the solenoid valve opens. This does happen on certain blends and certain doses. It is not considered a fault on the machine.

A My Lelit PL41 TEM also does the same thing...the puck sticks and must be scraped off. Like the person to posted the original question, it's really just an annoyance to me, not really a big problem. I'd say it sticks about 80 to 90% of the time. I consistently use 14 grams in the basket.

It is difficult to determine the exact issue. Our guess is a bad pump, but it also can be a partial blockage in the system. So, descale the machine and see if it improves. If not, replace the pump which on average last 5 years.

A Identical problem, after 6 months of 3-second delays, pump quit altogether. Replacement takes about 20 minutes and suitable for anyone with rudimentary mechanical skills, though suggest you carefully review the Lelit video on replacement for their technicians: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1QQ9r6AJvM. I purchased a pump 6 months ago after reading the previous post, it's currently out of stock at 1st-line 12/21 but you could look elsewhere. Thank you for your inquiry and posting the machine on your blog.

The PL041 can be backflushed using the optional backflush/blind disc. The backflush or 3 way solenoid valve tube is on the right side behind the front wall and it feeds into the drip tray.

It is important to treat the water for prevention of limescale. We do sell descaling agents, but prevention is better because descaling eats away at the internal metal and gaskets. We have two treatment options. V725 and MC747.

Only descale if a problem arises.

A Yes, it's a good idea to backflush the machine occasionally. The blank disc is a bit tricky to locate because of the odd size but they are available online. Can't remember where I found mine. You should also run a descaling solution ( like dezcal) through the machine once in a while.
A As indicated in the 1st Line description, it doesn't come with a solid filter basket. You have to buy it. Just check on 1st Line. The draining tube can be found in the middle of the bottom when you remove the drip tray-- its the tube you have to lift the tray around when you remove and replace the tray.

Thanks for the inquiry. In some environments, the intake or on return hoses found on some models (this is across many different manufacturers), black mold will develop just like in a shower or bathroom.

This does need to be removed as soon as possible. It is usually not immediate life threatening for ingestion because the water inside the machine at 200 degrees, and in most (not all) cases, bacteria, mold spores, fungus die.

On this machine, unplug the cold machine from the electrical outlet. Remove the top cover by removing the tank lid, then removing the two screws on the backside of the top cover.

Slide off the hose from the internal connection. In some cases there may be a tie-wrap that needs to be removed. Let the hose sit in a 50/50 bath of water and chlorine overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning. Air dry and rinse again until most of the chlorine smell is removed. Re-attach and re-assemble machine. The black gasket needs to be placed on the top cover before re-installing so there is a seal on top to prevent water spillage into the machine.

You may need to periodically do this maintenance.

Before replacing the pump, its best to test with the blind filter and run the coffee switch for 30 seconds.

If the pump maintains over 8 bar pressure after the coffee switch has been on for 8 seconds, then the pump and OPV is ok and it points to the grinder.

If not, descale the machine with the blind, and test again. Descaler needs to stay in the machine for 20 minutes before flushing.

Otherwise, it can be the vibration pump. Any 110 volt ULKA pump at 41 or 52 watts is ok. The 52 watt is more pwoerful, but it needs a longer wait time between extractions.

I hate to say it but, now that we're able to regulate boiler temp and visualize grouphead pressure (and thus adjust grind and tamp to suit, which can vary depending on the beans you're using), we're pulling much better shots with more consistent crema than we ever managed with the old PL041. We struggled with spending a major chunk of change on replacing, but we felt our old machine had provided years of pleasure and if we were to amortize the cost based on the # of shots pulled I'd say we more than got our money's worth, esp. when compared to other machines in this class/category. Best wishes whatever you do!

We are unaware of and have not seen any aluminum inside the PL041TEM espresso machine. Hence, we only have seen where the water is in contact with brass (boiler or valve) or stainless (dispersion screen and screw).

    300. Hello. I have been happily using a Lelit PL41 purchased from you 2 years ago. I clean it regularly including descaling and scrubbing the steam wand. However, recently I have noticed a small amount of fine black specks coming from the steam wand when I generate hot water. My recent descaling made no difference, nor did draining the boiler. I have not been able to find on the internet any information about this problem. Could you asist?

We have seen this on a variety of different makes and models, and in all cases, we found it to be either the coffee grinds back tracking into the boiler or the resultant of the water being used. Try using a different water for a few weeks. Make sure there is no black mold in your reservoir or intake pipes.

Other than the portafilter basket or gaskets outside the steam wand, there are no other black parts inside the machine. If it was one of these gaskets, you would have leakage at the portafilter or the steam wand connection to the valve.

A I have throughly cleaned the tank, so mold is not the issue. The water is clear. How can I prevent grounds from going back into the boiler?

There is no 100% way to prevent  a few grinds from going back to the boiler. Coffee dust particles will back track. In this case, the grinder is of low quality or the burrs are dull - thus producing coffee dust. This would need to be corrected. Next, backflush more often - after every extraction without detergent and with backflush detergent every 50 extractions. Lastly, run water through the steam wand with the valve open to flush out any particles.

Please note that if you have a lot of grinds, you may have an internal boiler issue - a defective pipe on this particular model OR the water is creating a similar issue that looks likes coffee grinds (we have seen this before)

Sorry for the delay as this document needed to be re-created from our old web site. The PID can be reset using these instructions.

The current stock, at the time of this writing, have an adjustable OPV. The manufacturer and 1stl-ine do not suggest adjusting this because the pump pressure can be adjusted by changing the grind fineness.

      Answered by the admin

Addendum: The OPV is currently adjustable on machines in stock. We normally advise not to change this as the grind fineness and amount of coffee in the basket can be attributable to the resultant pump pressure. For example, a customer changed his OPV to almost 6.0 bar, and then he inquired why his machine had a pump defect since it could not produce 9 bar of pressure. Vice versa, the OPV can be set to 8 bars, and the machine does not show 8 bar on the gauge because the grind is not fine enough or there is not enough coffee in the basket.

Unfortunately, the internet does not always keep up with changes made. This is why its always a good idea to look at the current product's specifications.
