Bezzera Matrix MN V2 Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Overview

The Bezzera Matrix MN illuminated (quite literally) at HOST Milan 2017.  Every attendee, including us, were drawn to this glowing beginner dual boiler espresso machine. We very quickly realized upon talking directly with Bezzera that there is more than meets the eye with this dual boiler machine. In addition, with durability that is inherent in Bezzera machines, the Matrix has been thoughtfully developed with user functionality as a key focus as well as its attractive design. If you need a machine to entertain with two different PID's, look no further!

Features

PID Touch Display

Bezzera equips the Matrix with a beautiful 3.5″ LED touch display that allows the user to program a number of functions with ease. Adjusting the temperature between the two boilers is crystal clear, as well as checking the water levels. Also, you can also adjust the color of the signature LED body panels on the Matrix in the settings of the touch display. Other programmable features on the touchpad include:

  • pre-infusion, priority heat up between boilers
  • auto on/off settings
  • switch between direct plumb and reservoir
  • automatic backflush program
  • maintenance reminders
  • selection of language

Illuminated LED Body Panels

Made from durable plexiglass, these LED body panels provide eye-catching illumination for the home. Further, you can customize the colors on the touch display to fit any mood. The glow beautifully reflects off the polished mirror finish stainless steel body.

Independently Controlled Boilers

Two separate PID’s control the thermostats for the .45 L coffee boiler and 1L water/steam boiler. Also, you can even program through the touch display which boiler you’d prefer to heat up first! All controlled by its 3.5″ touch display.

E61 Grouphead

The E61 grouphead ensures consistent water stability. Hot water circulates from the boiler through the grouphead and back. The result?  The grouphead and your portafilter stay nice and hot, especially important to get a nice shot of espresso. A lever next to the grouphead easily activates the pump to draw water through the coffee grinds.

Multi-Directional Steam and Hot Water Wand

Allows for more flexibility. Joystick controls for steam and hot water wands give instant on/off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise / counter-clockwise. In addition, each has a rubber cover to prevent fingers from burning.

Wooden Elements

Less plastic is always a bonus in our eyes. The Matrix is designed with wooden handles on not only the portafilter but the joysticks and lever as well.

Three Way Solenoid Valve

Allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction by relieving the pressure built up in the grouphead. The result is a dry puck of coffee you can easily knock out of the portafilter.

Rotary Vane Pump and Motor

Produces a quieter extraction than a vibratory vane pump. Situated underneath tank/reservoir, so adjustments can be made from underneath the espresso machine.

Very Large Water Tank

A 4 L water reservoir means fewer refills for higher volume use. Electronic sensors detect low water levels and indicate it on the touch display. Refilling occurs from the top of the machine by lifting up the lid on hinges.

Passive Cup Warmer

Able to hold up to six cappuccino cups and passively warm them to ensure coffee remains hot.

Automatic Water Refill to Boiler

In addition to automatic refilling of the boiler, the Matrix also has a safety cutout to prevent machine damage.

Accessories included:

  • Single and Double spout portafilter w/ wood handles
  • 1-cup & 2-cup filter baskets
  • Blind filter basket
  • Plastic tamper
  • Plastic scoop
  • Grouphead cleaning brush
  • Reservoir plug
  • 1.5-meter stainless steel braided hose
  • Instruction manual.

Notes
  • Since this is a new model, every Bezzera Matrix/Duo model gets inspected, bench tested, and calibrated with 'water only' prior to shipping. Upon arrival, please use the machine within 5 business days.
  • Do not move or lift the machine from the top rails as damage may occur to the rails or body of the machine.
  • The Bezzera Matrix DE comes from Bezzera on a mini pallet, which is why we will ship this machine out to you, the customer, on a pallet. Additionally, it is less likely that your machine will arrive damaged with this shipping method.
  • 15 AMP plug and cable are designed to be used with 15 AMP in a continuous way and they admit pick of current until around 20 AMP. During our tests, we recorded 17,76 AMP (as maximum current) only in the 3:20 minutes of the warm-up time (when both boiler heat up together).
  • During the coffee brewing the service boiler heating element is disabled and when the machine is not used, thanks to the PID controls, only current impulses are given to the heating elements.
  • Note from Bezzera dated 03/25/2021
    • 20 AMP plug will continue to be used on Matrix and Duo 110 Volt versions because the safety standards do not allow the use of an undersized plug compared with the power consumption reported in the machine data label.
    • We will add advice into the machine box where we explain to the final user that it is possible to use the machine with a 15 Amp plug adapter only setting a boiler priority.
    • We would like to inform you that, according to our tests, the major difference in the machine performance, setting or not the boiler priority, is in the warm-up period.
    • We faced no big performance differences in the coffee thermostability and water/steam services, in the regular machine use, giving priority to a coffee or steam boiler.
  • WARM-UP TIME (no priority)
    Coffee service: 3:20 min
Hot water / steam service: 6:45 min
  • WARM-UP TIME (coffee boiler/service boiler priority)
    Coffee service: 7:10 min
Hot water / steam service: 10:10 min
  • TEST CONDITION:
    Power supply: 110V
    Frequency: 60 Hz
    Room temperature: 22°C
    Coffee boiler set point: 92°C
    Service boiler set point: 125°C

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer’s defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
  • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
  • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
  • Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

We are asking customers to acquire the better dispersion/shower screen for the Matrix MN espresso machines. Funny, the new screen is also called Matrix.

    2. I have a Bezzera Matrix MN purchased back in mid 2020, and it has been working great so far. However, I have noticed it starts to make high pitch noise and more water coming out from the pressure release valve during brewing with high pressure. I don't know how to open this machine up and find the root cause of this noise, would you be able to advise what should i look at? Thank you!

Your grind may be too fine, and the pumped water needs to escape through the over-pressure valve. It could be a partial blockage in the grouphead or other parts. We would suggest descaling through the grouphead first. After this, a professional may need to evaluate the machine.

    4. My steam boiler is not heating up and I tried to reset the high limit it still not heating. So what could be the problems and what are the parts that I might need, I bought my Bezzera Matrix MN  in 2018 when it first came out

    8. The water level meter on my touch screen doesn’t really show the water level other than constantly showing 3/4 full (please refer to picture and video which I took when tank was almost empty) Is that something wrong with the machine? Also, I noticed there are opening into the internal mechanism on the top cup heating area. Would it affect machine operation when water dripping into the machine?

Please read the instructions. The water level on the touch screen is not for the water reservoir. It is for the water level in the steam boiler. This is indicated in the instructional manual.

As for the spacing on the top sides, we indicated this in our videos. We always recommend refilling the water reservoir with the water reservoir outside of the espresso machine.

Answered by the admin As mentioned, we confirm 3/8" BSPP/BSPT and the adapter works great!
    12. Hello, I am interested in the Matrix. I am curious about a rotary pump machine not being plumbed. I thought this was not good for this type of pump. Will you explain why it would be ok to use this machine with a reservoir and if you would recommend using a rotary pump machine this way? If I were to plumb the machine, what filtration system is recommended? Will the water filter also soften the water or would that have to be accomplished specifically with a water softener? I would not be able to plumb in the drip tray, would not be a problem? Thank you, Carol

      Hi Carol, great questions!

Years ago, it was not good to have a rotary vane pump pull water from a reservoir because they were not designed for double duty.  However, they have improved many of these pumps to withstand pulling water from a reservoir.

The nice part of the Bezzera double boilers is that the water is gravity fed from the bottom of the reservoir to the pump. The downside is in tank water softening. If going this route, the Oscar150 is the best solution for bottom gravity feed from the water reservoir to the pump. It takes magnesium and calcium and turns it into low grade salt. The nice part is that Bezzera machines with a gravity feed reservoir are very finicky to have some minerals to allow 5 volts to pass from one sensor to the other. Therefore, very pure or distilled water will not allow the machine to heat because the 5 volts of electricity can not pass through. Hence, the Oscar150 does good. The downside to the Oscar150 is that it needs 15 hours to make the ion exchange. Therefore, it should be placed in a pitcher with water for 15 hours. The refrig is ok!

As for direct plumbing, BWT is the way to go. We were the first to test and carry the systems in the USA, and everyone else followed our suit. Make sure to get the meter so you can program the meter to measure the volume of water going through. The flush valve is important to clear 3 gallons of rinsing the filter before it enters the machine. Many do not know that many high quality filters will have some paper sediment from manufacturing, and this sediment can clog the tiny openings in the valves of the machine. If one clogs the boielr refill valve to the boiler, the heating element can be damaged for a costly repair. Check out this BWT kit where you can package deal some of the items together for a discount!
