Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Overview

The Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler espresso machine illuminated (quite literally) at HOST Milan 2017.  Every attendee, including us, were drawn to this glowing beginner dual boiler espresso machine. After talking directly with Bezzera, we realized there is a lot more than meets the eye with this machine. The Matrix is designed with user functionality as a key focus. In addition, durability is inherent in Bezzera espresso machines, as well as its attractive design. S0 if you need an espresso machine to entertain with three different PID's, look no further! In addition, it has a rock solid stainless steel frame. Stainless steel front and rear panels. Very informative touch screen display backed with waterproof insulation internally. Altogether, the V2 upgrade includes an improved LCD display panel with enhanced glue sealant on the rear of glass and superior sealing protection behind the LCD board.

Features

Touch Display

The Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler sports a beautiful 3.5″ LED touch display. This allows you to program a number of functions with ease. Adjusting the temperature between the two boilers is crystal clear, as well as checking the water levels. Also, you can adjust the color of the signature LED body panels also can be adjusted in the settings of the touch display. Furthermore, other programs on the touchpad include:

  • pre-infusion, priority heat up between boilers
  • auto on/off settings – once per each day of the week (maintenance reminder and filter reminder need to be turned on)
  • switch between direct plumb and reservoir
  • automatic backflush program
  • maintenance reminders
  • selection of different languages

Illuminated LED Body Panels

Made from durable plexiglass, these LED near the bottom of the body panels provide eye-catching illumination for the home. Further, you can customize the colors on the touch display to fit any mood. The glow beautifully reflects off the polished mirror finish stainless steel body. Additionally, there are separate PID thermostats, one for the coffee boiler and one for the water/steam boiler. All controlled by a 3.5″ touch display.

Electronic Dosing

A keypad above the grouphead displays four designated buttons for volumetric coffee dosing – meaning you can program how much water is pumped through the grinds by volume. The 5th button on the right with Bezzera’s insignia is for manual dosing (on/off) of the water.

Independently Controlled Boilers

Two separate PID’s sensors monitor the .45 L coffee boiler and 1L water/steam boiler. You can control the boiler temperatures through the Touch Display. Moreover, through the touch display, you can program which boiler you would prefer to heat up first or have priority! Both internal boilers have insulation on their sides.

In addition, each boiler can be turned on or off independently.

PID Temperature-Controlled Grouphead

The Bezzera grouphead on the electronic DE version of the Matrix has its own PID sensor and heating element – providing superior temperature control. Additionally, the temperature is preset by Bezzera and can not be modified.

Multi-Directional Steam and Hot Water Wand

Allows for more flexibility. Joystick controls give instant on / off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise / counter-clockwise. Each wand has a rubber cover to prevent your fingers from burning. However, cool touch wands were NOT selected as this steam wand offers a greater throughput of steam power!

Wooden Handles on Valves and on Portafilters

The Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler comes with wooden handles for the single and dual-spouted portafilters and joystick levers. After all, less plastic is always a bonus in our eyes.

Three Way Solenoid Valve

Allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction by relieving the pressure built up in the grouphead. The result is a dry puck of coffee you can easily knock out of the portafilter.

Rotary Vane Pump and Motor

Produces a quieter extraction vs a vibratory vane pump. Below the tank/reservoir, you can make adjustments underneath the espresso machine.

Very Large Water Tank

A 4-liter water reservoir means fewer refills for higher volume use. Electronic sensors detect low water levels and indicate it on the touch display. Refilling occurs from the top of the machine by lifting up the lid on hinges. However, we strongly recommend removing the reservoir for refilling any espresso machine to avoid getting any water on top of the espresso machine.

On the left side of the reservoir, there is a low water sensor. This sensor can be calibrated through the Touch Display screen.

Passive Cup Warmer

Able to hold up to six small cappuccino cups and passively warm them to ensure coffee remains hot.

Automatic Water Refill to Boiler

An automatic water refill of steam boiler plus safety cutoff minimizes damage to steam boiler from lack of water.

Notes
  • Since this is a new model, every Bezzera Matrix/Duo model gets inspected, bench tested, and calibrated with 'water only' prior to shipping. Upon arrival, please use the machine within 5 business days.
  • Do not move or lift the machine from the top rails as damage may occur to the rails or body of the machine.
  • The Bezzera Matrix DE comes from Bezzera on a mini pallet, which is why we will ship this machine out to you, the customer, on a pallet. Additionally, it is less likely that your machine will arrive damaged with this shipping method.
  • 15 AMP plug and cable are designed to be used with 15 AMP in a continuous way and they admit pick of current until around 20 AMP. During our tests, we recorded 17,76 AMP (as maximum current) only in the 3:20 minutes of the warm-up time (when both boiler heat up together).
  • During the coffee brewing the service boiler heating element is disabled and when the machine is not used, thanks to the PID controls, only current impulses are given to the heating elements.
  • Note from Bezzera dated 03/25/2021
    • 20 AMP plug will continue to be used on Matrix and Duo 110 Volt versions because the safety standards do not allow the use of an undersized plug compared with the power consumption reported in the machine data label.
    • We will add advice into the machine box where we explain to the final user that it is possible to use the machine with a 15 Amp plug adapter only setting a boiler priority.
    • We would like to inform you that, according to our tests, the major difference in the machine performance, setting or not the boiler priority, is in the warm-up period.
    • We faced no big performance differences in the coffee thermostability and water/steam services, in the regular machine use, giving priority to a coffee or steam boiler.
  • WARM-UP TIME (no priority)
    Coffee service: 3:20 min
Hot water / steam service: 6:45 min
  • WARM-UP TIME (coffee boiler/service boiler priority)
    Coffee service: 7:10 min
Hot water / steam service: 10:10 min
  • TEST CONDITION:
    Power supply: 110V
    Frequency: 60 Hz
    Room temperature: 22°C
    Coffee boiler set point: 92°C
    Service boiler set point: 125°C

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer’s defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
  • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
  • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
  • Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

We suggest not using the machine until the leak is repaired. Possible reason why the board went defective in the first place. The leaking parts need to be repaired or the reason for the leak needs to be determined. Unfortunately, this problem is beyond the scope of our free services via Q&A.

    2. On my bezzera matrix de machine the display is no longer working. The touchscreen still works but the backlight is not on and thus the screen appears blank. Have you seen this happen before? Is it common?

Although not common, we have seen this before on several machines over the past 3-4 years. Again, not common.

    4. Hi Guys, my Matrix DE is about 18months old, recently when the unit turns on the rotary pump just runs and runs & the steam never builds pressure, after a 2-3 minutes it stops and has an error "loading timeout". What do I need to replace / fix?

Sorry, this is beyond the scope of our free support services we offer as this can be one or more issues, from the brain unit, to wiring, to the refill probe, to the solenoid valve. The machine needs to be evaluated by a professional to determine if there are multiple issues affecting the undesired outcome.

    6. I purchased a Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler Espresso Machine – V2, Triple PID from 1st line 2 years ago and it's recently been giving me problems. Currently when I turn the machine on that "change water filter" screen comes on and freezes not allowing the touch screen to work. From 4 to 1 week ago when I turned it on it would constantly go to the set boiler and steam temperature screen every second or less. It would sometimes stop and after a few minutes begin again going crazy with beeping beeping beeping. A week ago that mostly stopped but today the water filter thing happened and now i cannot use the machine at all. Any experience with these issues? Sorry, we have not seen nor heard of this before.  Please make sure no water got inside the machine. Please make sure to not use purified, RO, nor distilled water as this can impact the sensitivity of the water sensors in the machine and give that beeping noise. If you are, please add some tap water and try to get through the grouphead and water wand.

    8. When I turn it on it immediately goes to the temperature select screen and the temp goes up and down like crazy and constantly beeps every second or so. I am sometimes able to click ok and pull a shot before is goes back to the select screen. Are you familiar with this issue? I have not found anything that could be causing the issue. This happens under "tea settings" the majority of the time. The machine gets hot.

We have never seen this before in the three years in selling this machine. It sounds like a water issue. If purchased from us, please contact us with your order/invoice number for higher level technical support.

    10. Hi, I noticed today that my Bezzera Matrix DE espresso machine has a slow leak from the front bottom of the machine near the drip tray drain valve. The leak is a pretty constant drip while the machine is pulling a shot but the leak flow increased significantly during a backflush. It seems like it could possibly be from the drain valve connection or maybe the group head connection above that; I had difficulty trying to identify the source of the leak without dismantling the machine. Would you be able to advise how to proceed with a fix/repair?

Sorry for the delay in our response as this request was found in la-la land. We are unsure if you are referring to the grouphead valve which normally leaks after extraction, or the OPV which leaks during extraction, or an internal leak. If purchased from 1st-line, please email us pictures of where the leak is occurring. If purchased elsewhere, please contact your selling dealer as the selling dealer is responsible for service.

    12. Hi there! I recently purchased a new Bezzera Matrix DE from 1st Line and so far I'm loving the new machine! I had a few post-purchase questions I was hoping you'd be able to help me answer: The water level meter only seems to stay on the 3rd filled in bar out of the 4 level bar. Is there anything I need to do with the water to make the water level meter read correctly? How do I remove the reservoir or drain the machine if I need to? Is there a water filter in the machine that I need to replace? If so, do you sell the replacement water filter and have installation instructions?

The fill level on the touch screen is to show the water level of the steam boiler as indicated in the instructions.

Currently, there is no water filter/softener provided by Bezzera. We do have the Oscar osmotic packs to soften water.

    14. Could you tell me if it is possible to get shorter feet on this machine? Also, how much additional space could be saved if the cup rail can be removed? I'm looking at putting this in a bit of a short space under a cabinet and would like to know how short the overall height could be with the rails off and short feet. Thank you!

The steam boiler is where the how water comes out of. Hence, the steam boiler can be turned off through the display.

The gasket and screen should be replaced every 12-24 months under light home use. Commercial use requires every 6-12 months.

    20. Hi I am considering of upgrading my Siemens EQ9 fuldautomatic espressomachine to a better one, which makes better tasted espresso and where I can be a barista if I want to, but also do it in a more manually way. I am looking at the Bezzera Matrix DE (with bezzera group head and 3 PID's and LED display) I am from Denmark, so I know that I can't buy from Your store, and the machine doesn't match 230 volt, that we have in Denmark. But the problem is that I couldn't find that much customers reviews about this products. So for that reason I am asking you, to get some advice about this products. I have been watching your youtube channel, and like that. So keep up the good work and reviews and test about products. I am looking for a very good machine, which is reliable and makes very great tested espresso and other milk based drinks too. And I thinks this machine looks cool too, with the LED light etc. Are this machine as good as other brands, like ECM, Rocket, Profitec etc. Are the Bezzera Grouphead as good or even better then an ordinary E61 Grouphead? How long would it take for heating up this machine ready to brew? Have there been any problems/complaints about this product, and if so, what kind of problems? I know that this machine have a preinfusion function for between 1-4 seconds. But does it work well, like doing it manually, and does is mean something to the coffee and the taste of it? I am considering of connection to direct water and drain with a BWT Flex Head and a BWT Best Protect V filter. Do this machine need some kind of water pressure regulator within between the waterline, so the water pressure wouldn't be too high in volume, to prevent it from damage and leak? And also for a better preinfusion? Is 1 bar the way to go or? Are there anything else to be aware of, to protect this machine in the very best way? How long can it last before go to service with it? I have also been considering 3 different models of Espresso grinders, because I know that they are very important if not the most important, in the brewing process and the taste of the coffee as well. I am considering of these 3 models: Mazzer mini A or B Eureka ATOM Speciality 65 or 75 CEADO E37J Current I mostly go with CEADO in mind. I know they are more expensive, but I think, and have heard, that they are a very good proff quality, and would last for very, very long time. hope you understand my intention with my inquiry. Best regards Filip Denmark

Thank you for watching our videos. We are very sorry that we can not answer your questions. Since you are outside the USA, please understand:

      b) Each model you listed may work better or worse, may be more reliable or worse, etc. in Europe compared to the USA.

      c) We are not familiar with your water, so we would be taking a guess for the system that you need.

      d) We do not know the service levels or parts availability in your country, and this could impact your decision.

CE is not equal to NSF. Each country typically has their own certification standards, and these standards differ. The Bezzera Matrix espresso machines, at the time of this writing, are not UL, ETL nor NSF approved. If and when these machines are, we will update our web pages accordingly.

    24. In that case - can I program one of the pre-set push button for 1-2 second ( to operate the pump) for real pere-infusion, and then push the other pre-set button to make the coffee I want? Since this machine is program control - the machine can do real pre-infusion by operating the pump for 1-2 second then wait for the pre-infusion chosen time before start making the coffee - It should be very simple to program. Wonder why the manufacturer didn't do it - It is a very strong selling point as well

The programmable pre-infusion is the same for all buttons. Hence, pressing one dosage button, then the second would have pre-infusion twice.
