Bezzera Magica HX Espresso Machine

Overview

We brought in the original Bezzera Magica in May 2013 to add to our HX line of espresso machines. Its large 2-liter boiler made it great for cappuccino & latte drinkers. The E61 grouphead helps create consistent espresso shots back to back. Separate wands for steam and hot water with quick-action joystick controls make it great for tea & hot chocolate drinkers.

The PID version we have carried since September 2018. With this technology, steam can be generated quicker, which makes it even better if you are entertaining.

Features
  • Heat exchanger allows you to brew coffee, steam milk, and pour hot piping water all at the same time.
  • PID Controls - for regulating the boiler temperature.
  • Stainless steel body polished to a mirror finish.
  • E61 grouphead - hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot.
  • Boiler pressure gauge (measures 0-3) to indicate steam boiler pressure.
  • Pump pressure gauge (measures 0-16) to indicate brew pressure during espresso extraction. Please note that the only time this gauge should be looked at is when extracting espresso. At all other times, the reading is irrelevant.
  • Lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds.
  • Multi-directional steam wand and hot water wand allow for more flexibility.
  • Joystick controls for steam and hot water wands give instant on/off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise/counter clockwise.
  • Powerful vibratory pump rated at 15 bar please note that only 9 bar is needed for espresso.
  • Three way solenoid valve allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction.
  • Very large water tank (4 liters) - less refills for higher volume use.
  • Passive cup warmer on the top with guard rails.
  • Accessories - single spout portafilter, double spout portafilter, 1-cup filter basket, 2-cup filter basket, blind filter basket, plastic tamper, plastic scoop, grouphead cleaning brush, and instruction manual.

Notes

  • Top rails: The rails on the top cover can be removed to lower the height of the machine to ~14.75" (37.47 cm). Underneath the top cover, there are 6 nuts (2 per rail) that you must unscrew. A 7 mm socket wrench should work.
  • Manual Drain Valve: Starting with serial number NP01815321 and higher (until further notice from Bezzera and it may change again without notice), the minimum water level probe in the boiler has been removed. A manual drain valve has been added.

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer’s defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
  • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
  • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
  • Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

Finding your part
  • Please use the parts diagrams provided below to determine the part(s) you need. Then use our search box above to find the part(s) on our website. If no results come up, more than likely we do not stock the part.
  • If uncertain, please go to the equipment model or part product page. Then use the Q&A tab found on that web page to ask your question.
  • Lastly, and only if the first 2 options were exhausted, please use our parts inquiry page.
  • Our call center does not have the training to handle parts inquiries for over 60,000 different parts items. Asking any questions regarding parts will more than likely result in you being referred to the above steps.
  • Please note also that all parts purchases are non-returnable or refundable and do not include technical support, instructions, or warranties as the purchase price of any part does not cover the cost of technical support. Technical support is available for repairing equipment in our shop.
  • Sorry, we will only special order a part for a model we carry AND was purchased through our supply chain.
  • Since we are unaware of the mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing expertise of a parts buyer or the tools owned by a parts buyer, we are never able to advise if a self-repair can be performed.

Q Would natural spring water be okay? Brand arrowhead for example? answer now

Sorry, we are unable to recommend any brand of waters as we are not water experts and these bottling companies can use different sources to fill their bottles. We only recommend waters that are softened to less than 1 French degree and have a TDS between 80-1220ppm (and you can still have issues with this target). Any type of purified, RO or distilled water should be avoided as these will create issues as well.

    2. Does the Magica also have the heating element on the group head and faster warm up time like the BZ10 ?

From our experience across many different espresso machines, black and brown particles are a result of the mineral in the water and these customers also stated a metallic taste.

Several years ago, we had a customer who owned a Silvia espresso machine for about 10 years. He decided to replace it with a new Rancilio Silvia.  After receiving the new Silvia, he complained that black and brown particles were coming out of the hot water wand, but not the grouphead and he stated that he never had this issue with his old Silvia. The problem was that his old Silvia had a PFTE coating on the inside of the boiler and the water would not react with the boiler wall. After flushing the new machine with a different water, the problem of the particles and taste went away.

Although we definitely not water experts, our research has shown this to be magnesium in the water.

In other cases, the brown tint was from milk siphoning back into he boiler from steaming. This is why we recommend taking 4 ounces of hot water from the boiler at least once per day or once per week (no steaming at all), depending upon how often the machine is used to steam milk.

    6. how do you get the (right) gage on the Magica out? It is hard to reach the bolts because the left gage is in the way, but even so, it is so tight I can't get it to move. I am afraid of breaking the sensor wire by turning it too much.

Answered by the admin Yes, the barista can lift the lever partially up. However, there is only pre-infusion from the little steam pressure created in the heat exchanger. This feature of the lever works better on machines that are plumbed in. On tank only models with vibration pumps, the pre-infusion is kinda built in to the pump. The reason is that it takes up to 9 seconds for the vibration pump to build pre-infusion at the grouphead.
    10. I ordered a Bezzera Magica and I'm having problems with the machine: the PID display turns on/off frequently, randomly. I understand this may be related to no water detected, and water softness. I am sure the tank is full and I started using bottled water (crystal geyser) to exclude this problem. The issue persists. What do you suggest to address the problem? I'd prefer to not return the equipment, but the machine is unusable in this state as it's impossible to predict when the machine will be warm and ready

The Bezzera Magica PID espresso machine is very sensitive to water type used. Please watch our video as we go over how the incorrect water can shut the machine down and make it inoperative. Previous customers who had the same issue have resolved the issue by finding and changing to a water that can satisfy the requirement of the built-in safety features that prevent machine damage.
