Bezzera Duo DE V2 Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Overview

Look no further if you crave precise temperature control and unwavering stability! The Bezzera Duo DE, a remarkable dual boiler espresso machine, is the answer to your desires. With not one, not two, but three PID controllers, it regulates the temperature of the coffee boiler, the water/steam boiler, and even the grouphead itself. This meticulous attention to temperature control sets the Duo apart, ensuring that every espresso extraction is a masterpiece.

Our first encounter with the Duo at HOST Milan 2017 left us in awe. Bezzera's thoughtful engineering shines through in this beginner-friendly dual boiler espresso machine, empowering espresso enthusiasts to effortlessly achieve distinct flavor profiles.

But the features don't stop there. The Bezzera Duo DE boasts a stunning 3.5" LED touch display, elevating the user experience to new heights. Programming various functions becomes a breeze with this intuitive interface. From adjusting the temperature between the two boilers to checking water levels, everything is crystal clear.

The touchpad also grants you the power to customize and fine-tune your brewing experience with its programmable features, including pre-infusion settings, priority heat up between boilers, auto on/off preferences, and the option to switch between direct plumb and reservoir modes. Moreover, the automatic backflush program and maintenance reminders ensure that your machine remains in optimal condition.

The Bezzera Duo DE even caters to your language preference, allowing you to select the language of your choice. With its cutting-edge technology, user-friendly interface, and unparalleled temperature control, the Bezzera Duo DE is the ultimate dual boiler espresso machine that brings your espresso journey to new heights of perfection.

Features

Electronic Dosing

A keypad above the grouphead displays four designated buttons for volumetric coffee dosing, as well as a fifth button with Bezzera’s insignia for manual dosing.

Independently Controlled Boilers

Three separate PID’s control the .45 L coffee boiler and 1L water/steam boiler. Also, through the touch display, you can even program which boiler you would prefer to heat up first!

PID Temperature-Controlled Grouphead

The Bezzera grouphead on the electronic version of the Duo has its own PID–providing superior temperature control. Thus, this allows you to precisely understand what temperature you prefer for various blends.

Multi-Directional Steam and Hot Water Wand

Allows for more flexibility. Above all, joystick controls for steam and hot water wands give instant on/off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise / counter-clockwise. Each has a rubber cover to prevent fingers from burning.

Wooden Elements

The Duo is designed with wooden handles on not only the portafilter but the joysticks and lever as well. After all, less plastic is always a bonus in our eyes!

Three Way Solenoid Valve

Allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction by relieving the pressure built up in the grouphead. As a result, there is a dry puck of coffee that you can easily knock out of the portafilter.

Rotary Vane Pump and Motor

Produces a quieter extraction vs a vibratory vane pump. Situated underneath tank/reservoir and adjustment can be made from underneath the espresso machine.

Very Large Water Tank

A 4 L water reservoir means fewer refills for higher volume use, low water levels are detected by an electronic sensor and are indicated on the touch display. Refilling occurs from the top of the machine by lifting up the lid on hinges.

Passive Cup Warmer

Able to hold up to six cappuccino cups and passively warm them to ensure coffee remains hot.

Automatic Water Refill to Boiler

Automatic plus safety cutout to prevent machine damage.

Accessories included:

  • Single and Double spout portafilter w/ wood handles
  • 1-cup & 2-cup filter baskets

Notes
  • Since this is a new model, every Bezzera Matrix/Duo model gets inspected, bench tested, and calibrated with 'water only' prior to shipping. Upon arrival, please use the machine within 5 business days.
  • Do not move or lift the machine from the top rails as damage may occur to the rails or body of the machine.
  • The Bezzera Matrix DE comes from Bezzera on a mini pallet, which is why we will ship this machine out to you, the customer, on a pallet. Additionally, it is less likely that your machine will arrive damaged with this shipping method.
  • 15 AMP plug and cable are designed to be used with 15 AMP in a continuous way and they admit pick of current until around 20 AMP. During our tests, we recorded 17,76 AMP (as maximum current) only in the 3:20 minutes of the warm-up time (when both boiler heat up together).
  • During the coffee brewing the service boiler heating element is disabled and when the machine is not used, thanks to the PID controls, only current impulses are given to the heating elements.
  • Note from Bezzera dated 03/25/2021
    • 20 AMP plug will continue to be used on Matrix and Duo 110 Volt versions because the safety standards do not allow the use of an undersized plug compared with the power consumption reported in the machine data label.
    • We will add advice into the machine box where we explain to the final user that it is possible to use the machine with a 15 Amp plug adapter only setting a boiler priority.
    • We would like to inform you that, according to our tests, the major difference in the machine performance, setting or not the boiler priority, is in the warm-up period.
    • We faced no big performance differences in the coffee thermostability and water/steam services, in the regular machine use, giving priority to a coffee or steam boiler.
  • WARM-UP TIME (no priority)
    Coffee service: 3:20 min
Hot water / steam service: 6:45 min
  • WARM-UP TIME (coffee boiler/service boiler priority)
    Coffee service: 7:10 min
Hot water / steam service: 10:10 min
  • TEST CONDITION:
    Power supply: 110V
    Frequency: 60 Hz
    Room temperature: 22°C
    Coffee boiler set point: 92°C
    Service boiler set point: 125°C

General Espresso Machine Notes/Warnings:

  • Upon first use (tank/reservoir models): On the initial start-up (or after a long period of non-use), it is important to make sure the pump is removing water from the tank. When the machine is powered on, you will hear the pump running. After 5 seconds, squeeze the in-line hose in the tank (usually the longest hose, has a particle filter attached). if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us. For more information, visit this page General Manual Pump Priming.
  • Electrical: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer’s defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. Without the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat, or the wiring inside. For more information, visit this page Power Protection.
  • Water: To increase the useful life and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled, purified, or reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale. For more information, visit this page Water Choice.
  • Descaling: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. Too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine. As a preventative measure, we recommend using softened water as explained in the bullet point above.
  • Backflushing: This procedure of cleaning the grouphead will need to be performed from time to time. For more information, visit this page Espresso Machine Backflush – Why 50?

My steam boiler stopped heating. I unplugged the wires to the heating element and a volt-olhm measures open line across the element. I am assuming I need to replace the element? Is this normal for a 2.5 year old machine? Also, are any gaskets or other parts recommended?

A new gasket is always needed. A heating element sounds like it is needed.

    2. The group head on my duo de is cold. It’s been fine for a couple of years, but now will not heat up. I’ve replaced the heating element in the head, but it’s still cold. Any ideas what could cause this?

At this point, it should be evaluated by a professional as there 'may' be other issues beyond the scope of our free services via Q&A.

    4. I'm looking for a couple of replacement parts for a DUO DE I recently came into ownership of that has some damage. Most notably, I need part 7373012 which is the reservoir plastic (I would also accept 5963171 if that is all that available, although my filter portion is still good). It was also missing the drain grid (5074672LW). If it helps confirm parts, this is a v2 Duo DE manufactured in 2021 (with the 20 amp cord)

      Hi,

Sorry, we do not carry any of those parts.

    6. The LED touchscreen went completely blank and espresso machine does not work without it. I checked power supply and the power button both are OK and machine lights up. I also checked fuse inside power compartment and is not blown. I also checked water supply and the reset on boiler and steam, all OK. Does the touchscreen LED just wear out over time and needs to be replaced. Or is there a way to reset the touchscreen.

We do not like RO systems because they create oxidation on parts. Re-mineralization can be tricky because it can affect different sensors. IOHO, water, in general, is tricky because water good for extraction is not good for the machine, and water good for the machine is not good for extractions.

Answered by the admin Sorry, you will need to ask Bezzera for all specifics. The major change has been the display upgraded with a better glue to glass, some internal programming changes, and superior insulation from water and condensation. Again, you will need to ask Bezzera for all specifics.
    16. I’m interested in the Bezerra Duo with the Bezerra group. One question that I’m curious about... is the BZ group a standard size such that my existing funnel, IMS baskets, etc. for my E61 will work with the portafilter for the BZ? Apologies if I missed this somewhere on the website.

Please use the machine in water tank mode for 2 weeks before plumbing. This is to make sure there is no problem with the machine that canbe caused by plumbing it in. Plumbing a machine in to the water line requires a good amount of work. In addition, you will need to place your machine and then determine all the parts needed to get connected to the water line.

      Please follow our recommendations.

Please read these instructions. Since these instructions are for those machines with hoses in the tank, the Bezzera machine would need to be put into plumbed mode and the water tank removed. Run grouphead for 10 seconds, and open water valve  for 15 seconds and power down unit. Let how water valve to exit all hot water. Remember, to immediately set back to tank mode before storage or shipping as to avoid damage on next start up.

Sorry for the delay as we have been inundated with requests these past few days. The answer is it depends. The following scenario is under the circumstance that the lever on the side of the grouphead is brought up 90 degrees.

In direct plumb mode, the water line pressure is used for the pre-infusion on the Bezzera DE Dual Boiler Triple PID Espresso Machine.

In tank mode, the pressure that builds up in the thermo-syphon loop between the grouphead and coffee boiler is used to wet the ground espresso coffee in the filter basket.

After the programmed pre-infusion time in the display panel expires, the rotary vane pump cranks up to full programmed pump pressure.

A When it set for pre-infusion the machine operate the pump for 2-3 seconds to build up the pressure then wait for the perset infusion time. Hence the machine do real pre-infusion no matter if it connect to water line or use the water tank.
A When set to pre-infusion the machine operate the pump for 2-3 seconds to build up the pressure then wait for the setup infusion time. Hance this is real pre-infusion and not just pre-wetting. It is doing it connected to the water tank or direct water line. It bring up the pressure to about 5-6 bar (according to the gage on my machine - software version 2.2).

Although a dedicated 15 amp circuit can work,  a dedicated 20 amp circuit works best. It needs to be dedicated since the voltage drawn by this machine and another appliance or light can cause a spike in voltage or overheating of the wires or a tripping of the circuit breaker.

Sorry, we are unsure how Bezzera measures their machines. We typically report the highest point on the machine's description on our web site. We usually include the guardrails in our measurement. Here are the details:

      • Measurements: 13" Width  x 18.5" Depth x 16 5/8th H with rails (and 15" H without rails)
        Cup Warmer: 9 3/4" x 9 3/4"

The Bezzera grouphead allows the user to program the water dosage of the espresso extraction. Since this grouphead looks a little smaller, the PID contyroller with mini heater makes it more stable than without. However, we are unsure, at the time of this writing, if it is more, same, or less stable than an E61 grouphead.

    36. What is the purpose behind being able to tell the machine which of the two boilers have heating priority? If you are going to make a milk based drink, you have to wait for both of them to heat up anyway. So is this how the machine lowers its current draw during initial heat up in order to remain on a 15amp circuit? (I'm assuming it will not require a 20 amp circuit)

Please understand there is a variety of situations than a particular espresso machine can be used in. With 110 volts available to a double boiler, there is a limitation to have only one boiler powered. In situations where espresso is mostly served, the operator would want the priority on the coffee boiler to maintain maximum consistency and not have a greater drop in temp when the steam boiler needs heat. In situations where there is lots of entertaining of espresso-milk based beverages, the speed of service will increase with priority to the steam boiler getting power. Yes, the coffee boiler will drop temp faster, but the milk will most likely hide the slight inconsistencies.

The heating priority has nothing to do with the amperage as the Bezzera DUO works with priority heating in either amperage. The 20 amp will be better as it will heat one boiler faster. In addition, the 1500 watt steam boiler would almost max out a 15 amp breaker.

Once fully warmed, the coffee boiler can extract back to back espresso shots. Please note to check with your local health and building department inspectors as this machine does not have ETL, nor NSF approvals at the time of this response.
