Baratza Vario W Coffee Grinder

The Baratza Vario W is a fully integrated weight-based grinder. It uses real-time weight-based grinding with a built-in electronic scale. Set the weight you want, the Vario-W does the rest, weighing the ground coffee to within +/- 0.2 g, while grinding, and stopping automatically.

It has all the features of the Vario including small footprint, macro/micro adjustment, 54mm ceramic burrs, a broad range of grind, but uses a weight-based dosing approach rather than a time-based approach.

The Vario-W grinds 1.5g/sec at espresso and 2.5g/sec at Press.

The Vario-W uses an easy and intuitive operation panel that includes three programmable dosage buttons, and a digital LCD window which displays the weight value.

No more need to manually pre-weigh your beans. The Vario-W weighs the ground coffee then automatically stops the grinder. Ideally suited to about 50-60 cups of coffee a day (about 2 lbs of coffee).

An inexpensive way to reduce labor time and increase accuracy.

Set up a grinder for each coffee you offer and program in three weights (e.g.#1 Chemex, #2 pour-over, #3 siphon).

You could have two to three Vario-W solutions for about the same cost as a commercial grinder.

Features:

Burrs

The Vario-W’s 54 mm professional ceramic flat burrs produce accurate grinding, high throughput and remain sharp twice as long the highest quality steel burrs. The Vario-W grinds 1.6 grams/second for espresso and 2.2 grams/second for Press. The broad range of grind (230 microns to 1150 microns) and the narrow particle distribution (lack of fines) are the hallmarks of the superiority of the Vario-W’s burrs.

Digital Control Panel

The front-mounted control panel with LED display is easy and intuitive. Three programmable buttons allow the user to program in the desired weight (+/- 0.1). Simply press the START button and the Baratza Vario W automatically delivers precise dosing.

Grinding Adjustment

The Vario-W offers macro and micro adjust for fine tuning with ease. The macro adjustment moves from fine to coarse grinding in 10 distinct and repeatable settings. A secondary micro adjustment arm further divides each of the 10 macro steps into 20 distinct settings. These steps enable you to dial in the exact grind for the perfect shot.

Grinds Left in Grinder

The Baratza Vario W minimizes the ground coffee left in the grinder. This helps reduce coffee waste and will also help maximize the freshness of your coffee grinds.

Brewing Methods

Not only does the Baratza Vario W have a good grind range for espresso, but it also has a wide range for other brew methods. This includes pourover brewers such as Chemex.

Motor

A powerful, high torque DC motor effortlessly drives the burrs. This motor turns slowly resulting in cool, quiet operation and permits long grinding duty-cycles. The circuitry is also equipped with an automatically resetting, thermal cutoff switch.

Calibration

The Vario-W is calibrated at the factory to ensure an accurate range of grind. If necessary, the Vario-W burrs can be easily calibrated using the special calibration tool that comes with the grinder.

Cleaning

Burrs are easily removable with no tools, making cleaning very easy.

  1. Changing grind settings: As with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings when the unit is powered ‘on’ and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will ‘gunk’ up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result occurs, this will be considered operator error for lack of following directions, and not be classified as a defective grinder.
  2. Finding coffee grinds in a new grinder: We have confirmed that the manufacturer tests EVERY grinder with coffee beans before it leaves their facility, but they are not always able to get every trace of coffee out of the grinders after testing. As a result, you may find coffee beans or grinds inside your grinder, or there may be grinds in the packaging when you unwrap it.
  3. Static issues: There are static issues with all grinders, even the highest quality models. We firmly believe that the static comes from the coffee beans. If you are having static problems with your coffee grinder, trying using a different blend of beans.
  4. Replacing burrs: NEVER use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to wedge under the burrs for removal. This could badly damage your grinder.
  5. Electrical cord: Please note that the electrical cord is placed between the packaging (foam or cardboard) and the underside body of the grinder. During shipping, it is normal for a bend or insignificant blemish / slice to damage the cord.

Espresso Grinder Warning

  • CLEANING WARNING: We recommend using grinder cleaning agents. We do not recommend any removal of the burrs or burr carrier for cleaning as re-assembly can cause damage.
  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso grinder which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. The lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso grinder can be damaged at the power switch, the capacitor, the motor, or the wiring.

The world shall never know. Seriously, retention depends upon several factors, which include but are not limited to fineness of the grind, coffee blend used, humidity, etc.
