Ascaso Steel Uno PID Espresso Machine w/ Wood Handle & Steam Knob

Overview:

The Ascaso Steel Uno PID has finds the balance between bringing a professionally dynamic designed espresso machine to a domestic setting.  With the addition of the PID, control of the temperature of your coffee and hot water is at your fingertips! New design features like the blue LED’s along the toggle switches, the portafilter handle and steam knob crafted out of Pyrenean boxwood, and an active cup warmer sets this machine a part from many home models in it’s price range.

PID Display
  • Adjustable temperature in one-degree increments.
  • Stand-by option available.
  • Coffee dose timer.
  • Programmable pre-infusion. (0 to 5 seconds).
  • Alarms (5): Water/coffee ratio, coffee or steam gauge, coffee group or steam. (Display indicates error type).
Control of Coffee Dose

Ascaso includes the ability to choose between single and double shot dosing for coffee, and upgrade from previous versions of the Steel UNO.

Active Cup Warmer

Unlike the other Steel UNO models, the PID version has a 38W plate under the top panel actively warms cups, versus warming the cups with passive heat.

Wooden Portafilter Handle and Steam Knob

Ascaso has crafted the portafilter handle and steam knob out of Pyrenean boxwood–adding artful, chemical-free durability that you can feel!

Stainless Steel Body

Manufactured in stainless steel for maximum sturdiness, coated with a black or white enamel.

Thermoblock Technology

The thermoblock is designed of aluminum for fast warm up times and thickness for good temperature stability. Aluminum also avoids ‘pitting’ in cases where purified water is used. The inside pipe for which water comes in contact for heating is made of stainless steel. Another bonus? The thermoblock in this case is less prone to limescale build up from magnesium and calcium – limescale is a major factor in causing problems on espresso machines.

3-way solenoid valve

Allows you the ability to remove the portafilter immediately after brewing, turning your grinds into a puck, rather than a watery mess!

Quality brewing group

Made of chrome plated brass, the grouphead on the Ascaso Steel UNO evenly distributes heat and reduces hotspots for more temperature consistent espresso. It has also been designed to evenly distribute water across the coffee grounds for a better extraction.

Adjustable Over Pressure Valve

The ability to adjust the over pressure valve allows you to perfect your coffee to the flavor profile that is distinctly yours. The possibilities are endless!

1.3 L Water Reservoir

A microprocessor pulsates the pump so water in the reservoir continuously fills the thermoblock for continuous steam – until the reservoir runs near empty.

Illuminated Brew Area

Making coffee early in the morning, or who knows, late at night has never been easier! Ascaso has designed the Steel UNO with an illuminated work area so you can guarantee your coffee is making its way to your cup–no matter how dark it is.

Panarello Steam Tip

Frothing milk has never been simpler! The panarello steam tip that Ascaso provides will have you making luxurious lattes and cappuccinos in no time. Ascaso also provides a new and improved steam tip for those who want a little more control with their microfoam.

Versatility between different brewing methods

No conversion kits needed here! As of April 2014, Ascaso has combined the ground / pod system into one. Simply switch out the filter basket to brew with freshly ground coffee or E.S.E pods. Ascaso provides FOUR different baskets.

Accessories included
  • Dual-spout portafilter.
  • Single and double pressurized filter baskets, Double non-pressurized basket, E.S.E Pod basket.
  • Aluminum tamper–an upgrade to the plastic tamper most manufacturers include.
  • Plastic scoop for pre-ground coffee.

Espresso Machine Warning:

  • ELECTRICAL WARNING: To avoid electrical damage to this espresso machine which is not considered a manufacturer's defect, please acquire and install a single-outlet surge suppressor rated at 1080 joules or higher. the lack of the recommended surge suppressor, the espresso machine can be damaged at the power switch, the electronics, the heating element, the pressurstat or the wiring inside.
  • WATER WARNING: To increase the useful life of and not damage your espresso machine, please use softened water. Softened water is water without calcium and without magnesium, but still has other minerals for espresso extraction. Do not use distilled water, purified water, nor reverse osmosis water as these types of water create oxidation with the metals and cause the same damaging effects as limescale.
  • DESCALING WARNING: We do not recommend descaling unless there is an issue with the espresso machine. The reason is that too much descaling can eat away at the metals and gaskets inside an espresso machine.

Hello. I have had the Steel Uno PID for several years. Only had the steam valve gasket issue (I recommend buying multiple of them). Today during a backflush process I noticed only a dribble going back into the water tank. In addition during the process it kept running vs stopping after a period (like while pulling a regular shot). Could this be a solenoid issue? Or just plumbing? I can send a video if necessary. Let me know if there is any other troubleshooting I can do. Thanks.

It is probably best to run a descaler through the machine first.

    2. Was interested in the new v4 Ascaso Steel Duo, or perhaps just the uno. I see it is now discontinued. Any reason why when it seems they are just beginning to have stock in North America at other dealers?

1st-line has discontinued carrying Ascaso. You can call to find out the reasons. We leave the information posted on ouyr web site so customers know we discontinued the machines and for their future reference in case they re-sell. You may find the machine at other dealers, and we wish you the best of luck.

    4. I purchased this machine from 1st-Line maybe ten years ago. It was a display model or test model or something, I can't recall, and it was in combo with an Ascaso grinder. It has worked great up until recently when it began tripping the circuit breaker. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

The internals will need to be inspected as well as electrical parts tested with a multimeter.

    6. I have an Ascaso Steel Uno Professional PID Espresso Machine - V2 - C107 that was purchased from your Company. I have 2 problems with the unit. · The black rubber seal around the portafilter housing keeps coming out on one side when the machine is heating up and the portafilter wouldn’t fit. Please see the attached picture. I don’t know how to remove it or fix it. I have to push it in with difficulty every time and place the portafilter in the machine while it is getting hot, but it will come out again for the next use. · The steam wand leaks water when the machine is turned on and is getting hot even though the valve is closed

      Ascaso Steel Uno grouphead Inside

Please review these instructions for replacing the portafilter gasket. You will need to use the Ascaso diagrams to determine the replacement gaskets because Ascaso has multiple versions on these gaskets and we are unsure which fits as they look so close to each other. Then search our web site's search box by part number (sometimes without periods). Read the descriptions.

There are multiple points for a leaking steam wand. It is beyond the scope of our free services. Since this is an older machine, it is best a professional to evaluate it. It could be one of a few different o-rings, the steam valve itself, or the stem.

A The steam valve issue can be fixed by replacing the Part Ascaso I.2908 2015 Steam Valve Gasket and Small Internal Stem. It is a poorly designed part that will need to be replaced periodically. You will need a snap ring plier and a socket set. As far as the portafilter housing, I actually had to grind down the top of my portofilter (without the basket) in order for it to fit properly. Editor's Note: The question for this machine is for Version 2, and the above part will probably not fit as these new Ascaso machines have a completely different valve.

    10. I have a question about one of your answers above " c) Descale ONLY if there is an issue. Descaling can eat the gaskets and metals inside the machine." I thought you were supposed to descale periodically based on water tests?

    12. I have an Uno Steel with PID that I bought from you a few years ago. I have a couple of problems now: 1. the spring in the filter holder has broken, so the basket falls out when I use the knock box. Can I replace the spring, or do I need a new filter holder? 2. I need a tool to turn the screw that holds water screen and diffuser in place. The screw head may be stripped. My hex wrenches don't work, I used to use a torx wrench but it's broken. Any suggestions? Thanks.

We do stock the portafilter spring. As for the screw, we are sorry to hear this. The coffee oils behind the screen have pushed the screen outwards that the screw is difficult to unwind. Therefore, the screen needs to be ripped out, then the screw will come out more easily. The screen will need to be replaced. Please use the diagrams under the support link at the top of our web site.

A I think I bought this Uno Steel Professional with PID in 2012, so it's about 7 years old. Does it make sense to send this machine in for repair in terms of its remaining expected life? It has a brass boiler, unlike the newer Ascaso models which use thermoblock. I'm not aware of any other problems other than the screen screw issue mentioned previously. Thanks for your help.

    14. My machine has begun malfunctioning. I am unable to get the machine to produce more than 5 bars of pressure. I have tried adjusting the OPV multiple times with no success. Needless to say, I am very disappointed. We make 2-4 espresso per day, so this machine is getting very light use. Please let me know what my options are.

Please note the pump pressure can be checked with the blind filter inserted into the portafilter which is inserted into the grouphead. The coffee switch needs to be engaged and after 30 seconds, the machine will usually get up to over 9 bar. If this is the case, then the espresso machine is working normally. This same procedure needs to be used when adjusting the OPV as the OPV only regulates the maximum allowable pressure. The OPV does not regulate the actual pump pressure. There is a difference.

The pump pressure is set by the resistance of the coffee grind fineness, the amount of the ground espresso coffee in the basket, and the tamping pressure. All three of these create the resistance that the pump needs to overcome up tot he point of the OPV maximum set point. So, if the OPV is set to 9 bar, the OPV will open at 9 bar. If the coffee is ground too coarse, the pump pressure may only get up to 5 bar. If the ground espresso coffee is is too fine, the pump pressure may go over 9 bar, the OPV will open to allow all the water out and no espresso extraction will pour. When these 3 parameters are in balance, the pump pressure gauge should read about 9 bar.

    16. why is the steam wand on the right? seems like a design error, doesn't the portafilter hand run into it? how many grams of coffee (about) does the basket hold ? are there any reviews here ?

Design error? Sometimes manufacturers will want to differentiate themselves from the competition. In fact, sometimes users want to place the steam wand over their kitchen sink. There may only be counter space on the right of left side.

Sorry, there are no reviews as this espresso machine is fairly new to the US market. As for grams in the basket, this can vary slightly dependent upon the grind fineness and actual coffee being used.

Our general maintenance recommendations are as follows:

      a) Backflush with detergent minimum every 50 espresso extractions, and

      b) Purchase, if not included, a V725 rechargeable ion exchange water softener to reduce the calcium and magnesium from the water. This is limescale reduction, and

      c) Descale ONLY if there is an issue. Descaling can eat the gaskets and metals inside the machine.
