Bottomless Portafilter
Overview:
The CuadraII now includes a no-burn steam wand and no-burn hot water wand.

E61 grouphead. Heat exchanger (HX). Steam milk and make espresso at the same time. Boiler pressure gauge. There is even a refill spout so you do not need to pull your machine forward to fill the reservoir. Brain unit, pump, and solenoid valve are near bottom to avoid boiler heat which rises, and these same items are protected with a stainless steel covering to prevent water from splashing on them. Need we say more?
Features:
  • E61 Grouphead: Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot.
  • Multi-directional no-burn steam wand: Allows the user to pivot the steam wand in the right position for milk frothing and steaming.
  • Multi-directional no-burn hot water wand: Allows movement for larger and smaller cups. We recommend not pulling out more than 4 ounces at a time and to wait for the pump to complete refilling the boiler before pulling an additional 4 ounces.
  • Manual 3 way grouphead valve: Allows back to back espresso extractions.
  • Large 1.8 liter copper boiler: Provides ample steam power for home and office use.
  • XP700 Mater pressurestat: this is an upgraded version regulator to monitor the steam pressure in the boiler.
  • Parker solenoid valve: Utilized to control the automatic water refill of the boiler.
  • Small-style over pressure valve: Used to maintain the compactness of this machine.
  • Low water cut-off switch: Located underneath the reservoir to power off the machine when the reservoir is low on water.
  • Anti-vacuum valve: Incorporated to remove any vacuum from the boiler when it cools down.
  • Removable water reservoir for easy cleaning: Should be cleaned with detergent every two weeks.
  • Gauge: Measures boiler pressure.
  • Frame: Stainless steel (not polished).
  • Body: Polished chrome colored plastic side panels, stainless steel satin finish back panel, and front face polished vertical body panel.
  • Stainless steel drip tray: Slides out from the machine for easy cleaning. Plastic insert and stainless steel drip tray cover add a really nice touch.
  • Stainless steel cup warmer tray: Must be removed to refill water reservoir. As with any machine, cups can take up to 2 hours to preheat using a cup warmer tray. You can use the water wand to flash heat your cups.
  • Accessories included: One dual spout 58 mm brass portafilter with commercial grade plastic handle, single dose 58 mm filter basket, double dose 58 mm filter basket, rubber insert for backflushing, cheap plastic tamper, coffee measuring scoop, grouphead cleaning brush, removable electrical cord for 110 volt outlet, water softener, instructional manual, and water tank refill spout.
Specifications:
  • Measurements: 15" H x 14.5" W x 17" D (38.1 cm H x 36.83 cm W x 43.18 cm D).
  • Weight: 38 pounds (17.24 kilograms).
  • Power: 1200 watts, operates under 110-120 volts.
  • Boiler capacity: 0.48 gallons (1.8 liters).
  • Water tank capacity: 0.79 gallons (3 liters).
  • Drip tray capacity: ~25 ounces.
  • Color: Polished chrome.
  • ETL Listed: not even some of the more expensive machines have this rating from a product safety testing agency.
  • Made in Italy.
Notes:
  1. WARNING: This is to prevent damage. Upon initial start up (first time or any time after boiler is drained), it is important to make sure the pump is actually removing water from the reservoir. When the machine is powered on for the first time, you will hear the pump. After 5-10 seconds, you can squeeze the hoses in the reservoir and release. if you hear a different sound, this means the pump is working correctly. If not, immediately power down the machine and contact us.
  2. WARNING: Before operating the machine (first time or any time after machine is transported or softener is removed), please inspect the water softener in the reservoir to make sure it is not leaking any resins into the intake hose. It can be removed from the hose for inspection. If the water softener was damaged in transit, please do not use and contact us for replacement. If it leaks resins at any time, please do not use as resins will damage pump.
  3. CARE:
    1. We recommend backflushing the grouphead once every 50 espresso extractions.
    2. We recommend recharging the water softener once a month and replacing once per year. The machine comes with one in the reservoir.
    3. We recommend descaling the boiler once a month. Remember to remove the water softener before descaling.
  4. Upon receiving the machine, you will find a note inside by La Nuova Era saying that your machine has been checked and tested with coffee. Although it has been thoroughly cleaned, it may still contain minute traces of coffee.
  5. Read what others are saying about this machine and the commitments they have made to purchase this machine with great value!

"Great value machine and buying experience with 1st Line, highly recommended!"

Brent G on 4/7/2014 7:24:59 AM

State: Virginia

Review: I love this machine. I consistently produce great tasting drinks (daily), and the learning curve wasn't bad at all. My previous machine was ~4 years with a Silvia, so I had some decent home experience leading into this purchase. After a handful of test shots and calibrations with my grinder, I was pulling the best quality shots I've ever had at my home.

Owned for: Greater than 1 year

"Best damn machine ever"

Lindsay S on 2/6/2014 3:33:18 PM

Review: Magnifico simply magnifico. Great machine easy to use and great cuppa every time. I love good coffee and when I lived in Australia I had a range of machines including two Bezzera machines which also made great coffee. The hard part about moving here was finding a decent coffee or someone who could make a decent coffee. But with the Cuadra I don't need to look because it draws a great extraction, full of flavour and captures those coffee oils. just simply great coffee everytime. The only downside... More details

"WOW, did I ever make the right choice!"

Robert D. on 2/3/2014 2:59:42 PM

State: Connecticut

Review: I've had my Cuadra since April '13 and discovered a problem with a relay switch with the help and guidance of the website diagnostic page and Jim Piccinich via email. Jim was patient and diligent and I was so grateful not to have to box and mail the machine back. The part was still under warranty, btw. The product is great and the support is stellar—so if you're wondering where to get a great deal thats backed up with a great staff and not worry about anything else then 1st-Line should be your p... More details

"Love This Machine!"

Fletcher K. on 12/19/2013 6:27:19 AM

State: South Carolina

Review: This is really my first prosumer type machine. I started. like many, with a Krups or some such machine that would pull an average espresso at best, under all the perfect conditions. When that died, I got a great deal on a Capressa S8 so I went the fully-auto route. I wasn't dissapointed with the S8, especially considering the ease of use, but I was never thrilled with the results and I missed the therapeutic effects of the whole grinding, tamping, process. So I sold my S8 and bought the Cuadra. ... More details

"Solid performer"

Roman F. on 9/27/2013 1:04:05 PM

State: New York

Review: Excellent machine - inexpensive and well made at the same time. If you follow proper temperature management routine (temp. surfing) and your grinder is dialed in, it will make excellent espresso time after time. Steaming is powerful but I'm still not able to consistently get decent microfoam. Hence only 4 our 5 stars. I'm not sure if it's possible but I may try replacing the tip with a three-hole. Another minor annoyance is a fairly small tank which needs to be refilled too often. These are rela... More details

"A beautiful machine"

Regina W on 9/6/2013 1:05:49 PM

Review: This espresso machine is outstanding. I bought a Lelit PL53 espresso grinder, and it works great, too. Thank you for all of the reviews and suggestions that helped me make my decision.

"La Nuova Era Cuadra - a great buy!"

LPP on 7/9/2013 1:59:07 PM

State: Maryland

Review: I chose this machine after an extensive review, and I'm delighted with the choice. Combined with a Baratza Preciso grinder, there is enough flexibility (non-automation) to hone the espresso drinks, but not so much as to be daunting for a novice. It has an essential feature missing from some machines at this price-range an automatic shut-off when water runs low. The head/handle/filter system is commercial-grade, really well-built. It is missing a detailed instruction book, but there are web resou... More details

"The heart of my espresso station"

Perry N on 6/3/2013 8:41:46 AM

State: California

Review: And I got my heart on a budget. This is the best value in espresso machines. Nowhere else can you find a brand new, E61 group machine at this price point. In terms of shot quality and consistency, it beats everything I have used previously. Of course, it doesn't really compare to the $20,000 machines in coffee shops, at least with my level of skill, but I don't expect it to. Don't let the plastic sides dissuade, they're beautifully constructed and keep me from burning myself when I touch the sid... More details

"Great machine!"

Michael R on 5/3/2013 11:56:08 AM

State: Virginia

Review: This machine replaced a twenty year old Rancilio Audrey. It produces fantastic espresso and prodigious amounts of steam. I needed to get a new 57 mm tamper; the portafilter basket is slightly more tapered than the Rancilio one, so the 58 mm tamper would compress only the top layer of coffee, leading to a thin, weak extraction. Once I figured out the problem, the shots dialed in right away. Heatup time is about ten minutes.

"great machine"

Alan G on 4/17/2013 8:16:12 AM

State: Pennsylvania

Review: I have had the slightly earlier version of this machine for 5+ months now (black plastic drip tray and sides). It produces a great shot of espresso in conjunction with the Lelit grinder. Shots are consistent, the steamer is extraordinary, and the cup warmer actually warms cups. I've had no trouble making 5 regular size cappuccinos in a row. For the price, I don't see how you could do any better for this type of grouphead in a home setting. Disclaimer: buy an extra fuse because the one that comes... More details
